Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: Geoff the Duck Date: 13 Jan 02 - 08:25 AM This resource certainly ranks as one of the best links which Mudcat has given me. Thanks for finding it Stewie! I will definitely be using it to give me a bigger repertoire than I have previously been able to hear on the small number of Old-Time recordings I have found in the UK during my past 25 years of banjo playing. Many of these performers were, before today, just names or photos in Pete Seeger's 5-string banjo book. I look forward to hearing what they actually sounded like. By the way - does anyone know how they made that constant scratchy popping noise in the background? Does Catspaw make the instument? ;o) Quack!!!!! Geoff the Duck! |
Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: wysiwyg Date: 13 Jan 02 - 09:18 AM Must be a washboard player getting strangled and then jumping back up, which of course they would do in perfect rhythm NOT necessarily in rhythm with the music. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: Bill D Date: 13 Jan 02 - 03:00 PM now that CD burner I got last year will really go to work!....I can make CDs in any combination and play some of these without having to poke each one as I sit here at the PC.....(same as I am gonna do with some of the stuff from Rose, The Record Lady)... |
Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: GUEST Date: 13 Jan 02 - 03:37 PM bo-fucking-nanza Oh, that's nice. Just what we need here, a touch of class. It's good music though. |

Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: GUEST,Dale Date: 14 Jan 02 - 03:57 AM Did anyone notice that GUEST,baz@honkingduck.com is the person who put all those songs up for us to enjoy? I would say a BIG THANK YOU would be in order for him, though I figure he can get the picture just by reading this thread without all of us saying it. So thanks, and come on back and see us again. I would bet that Jim Reidy has much to share with us. Thanks again, and WELCOME! |
Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: Stewie Date: 14 Jan 02 - 04:35 AM As Dale says, Jim deserves a big thank you for his generosity in making this wonderful resource available. I thanked him on the oldtimey newsgroup when I indicated I would post his link here, but I thank him again now and welcome him to Mudcat. I too am sure he would have much to offer us. Dale, it is good to see you are still around. I was beginning to think you had disappeared again. --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Jan 02 - 07:21 PM Shouldn't we have some kind of Honours System for this kind of public service? Knight Companiun of tho Mudcat, or something like that.
As Rick said, this kind of thing makes up for the crap that sometimes goes on around here. |
Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: RangerSteve Date: 14 Jan 02 - 08:55 PM Stewie, you are my hero. Honorable mention to Rick Fielding for the jazz site that he mentioned. |
Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: Rick Fielding Date: 14 Jan 02 - 09:44 PM Why shucks and thank you! I have to emphasize though.."Crap" doesn't bother me a whole lot. Certainly not to the point of making me actually angry. It absolutely reflects real life around us, and I accept that. When I DO discover something fabulous like this and 'Redhotjazz' I tend to go over the top. These days 'old music' excites me a lot more than contemporary stuff. Rick |
Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: GutBucketeer Date: 15 Jan 02 - 01:21 AM All I can say is ditto on the thanks! Some real finds here, like the Georgia Yellow Hammers, who nearest that I can tell are simply not available on CD or record at this time. I've been looking! Thanks Stewie and Jim. I really like the site! JAB |

Subject: RE: Hundreds of old-time records on line From: Geoff the Duck Date: 01 Feb 02 - 06:53 PM I've been downloading a lot of oldtime stuff from Honking Duck, but there are also some good links from the site. This is one I spotted today Welcome to the amazing world of American Old Time Music! You may have already found it by other means, but if not it is worth looking at! It is definitely a good resource for anyone interested in Old-Time music! Quack! Geoff the Duck. |
