Subject: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 05 Jul 09 - 10:38 AM So, I'm dancin' to this at the moment.. Hot, baby, HOT! ...and I'm thinking of all the times I've been told off for daring to bring sex into discussion of folk music and musicians. WHY is it that this music, folk that is, some of which is insanely sexy has to be spoken of in hushed tones, with English folks preferring to prostate themselves in front of the Folk Altar, rather than lie down on it...and..... I'm just wonderin'...and feeling a little mischievious, you know, how you do sometimes... Anyway, I think that some of it IS sexy, and it should be celebrated for that fact...and if some folks swoon now and then over er..some folks, well it only adds to the sheer joy and the heat. Don't get too steamed up dancing to Ricky though, because that lassie in his song may make more than a few Boysies keel over with a smile on their face. Viva La Club de Sexy Folk! ;0) |

Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: jeddy Date: 05 Jul 09 - 11:09 AM we do seem to like either singing about sex or murder, if we can combine the two so much the better. i think we should follow their example on the sex front, but back in the olden days you didn't have to worry about being interupted by dog walkers and ramblers!!! or school trips! wow that would be embarasing. quite a few non folkie friends get ratherembarrased when you talk about sex or listen to songs about it, even rory mcloeds when mummy and daddy made me, made our parents squirm even though it is beautiful and very loving. what is there to be embarrased about? except if you are silly enough to be noisy at festivals!!!! take care all if in doubt out a sock in it!! LOL jade x x |

Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: Richard Bridge Date: 05 Jul 09 - 11:51 AM English folk song rarely seems to rollick in the sex, so to speak. Rather it mostly sniggers at it (as in "the Threshing Machine"). Thompson's "Lass at the hiring fair" is I think quite erotic. But the medal I think needs to go to a tune title "The lass is pissing brandy". |

Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 05 Jul 09 - 12:33 PM Oh heck, yes! I've seen Kathryn sing that song too, jade...I know exactly what you mean. She sings it superbly and her dancing is just sooooooooooo... Can't find her singing that, which is probably just as well as it would only cause a few of the fellas to end up in Accident and Emergency....but I found her singing this, accompanied by Sean Lakeman, of course. 'Whitby Maid' I've always said that Kathryn is one of the most underrated voices and talents in English folk. Hey, now here's a pretty darn sexy video... Cara, Kathryn, Sean, Seth, Sam - Equation - He Loves Me Oh, that they'd get back together again. They'd be a real folk supergroup these days and would sell out all over. |

Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: Joe_F Date: 05 Jul 09 - 05:37 PM I posted the following on the Bears Mailing List in 1996: A Woof for NEFFA I spent a day recently at the New England Folk Festival, an annual weekend extravaganza at a suburban highschool that attracts a couple of thousand people of all ages & sexes, mostly for dancing & singing. Perhaps a majority of the men are bearded, and a striking number are bears with comforting bellies & plentiful hair, some with heartbreaking faces & voices. I did not try to find out how many were queer, but as a spectacle such a gathering, IMO, merits attention from arctophiles. I see no reason to suppose that the concentration of bears in organized folkiedom is peculiar to New England. |

Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: Susan A-R Date: 05 Jul 09 - 11:55 PM Well, sometimes the music is very romantic, which puts me in mind of sexy. Sometimes the tunes or music are truly erotic, and then the voices/players/personalities are, and sometimes the setting is, with wine and stars and firelight, and when you put 'em together, oh my it can be intoxicating. Then there are times when the music, players and setting are NOT sexy at all. I guess it just depends, as it always does. |

Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 06 Jul 09 - 01:12 AM The general rule of thumb with folk songs is that if the words don't make sense the song is about sex and if they do it's about someone dying:-) I must say though that the Oysters, good as they are, do not turn me on in that sense. Ricky Martin does even less. I would say that Kathryn Tickell or Alison Goldfrapp do it for me but if I did I would probably be accused of being sexist, shallow, a potential rapist or all three. It is fine for the ladies to make comments about how sexy men are of course. Especialy if the comments are about me... :D (eG) |

Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: jeddy Date: 06 Jul 09 - 02:54 PM david, you go head and name them, no one here will think any less of you and i certainly wouldn't think that just because you like or have a thing for someone, that you would jump on them, even given the chance!!!!!! unless invited of course, in that case fill your boots!!! just be careful if you are in a very unstable or springy van!!! true there is a difference between sexy and singing about sex, but it does depend on who is singing. the blokes just don't do it for me but there are plenty of songs that just sound better coming from a woman!!!! take care all jade x x x x x x |
Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: Rifleman (inactive) Date: 06 Jul 09 - 03:26 PM Is Folk Music Sexy? ina word....no and, as Richard Bridge states, the songs listed by Shimrod are ABOUT sex and are not necessarily sexy in and of themselves...there IS a difference you know. |
Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 06 Jul 09 - 03:30 PM Do people have sex listening to folk music? Or feel inspired to have sex while listening to folk music? I do like Gently Johnny for the seduction/unveiling I must admit, but otherwise the so-called 'erotic' folk songs tend to leave me somewhat err unmoved. |
Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: jeddy Date: 06 Jul 09 - 03:32 PM sometimes it is the feel of a song or tune that makes it sexy, not the words or the person playing. there are several tunes that when dancing to you can't help but feel sensual and some songs that just make you want to ..... play. jade x x x |

Subject: RE: Is Folk Music Sexy? From: Richard Bridge Date: 06 Jul 09 - 06:26 PM Actually, I have thought of one folk song that I think is genuinely sexy. I can't remember it's name but it's on one of Ramskyte's tapes (yes tapes). Young carter lad driving horse and cart, gives young woman a lift, and they let horse set the pace, and gradually the draw of the horse and the motion of the cart combine to a more personal rhythm... Chorus goes "And it's ride on Dobbin Well done Dobbin Gee up and way-oh" |
