Lewes Saturday Folk Club MUSIC WORKSHOPS 2011
The workshops last a full Saturday or Sunday & the tutor performs at the Elephant & Castle, White Hill, Lewes BN7 2DJ,in the evening. Booking forms can be printed from the website www.lewessaturdayfolkclub.org/ about four months in advance.

Yes - John's workshops have this habit of selling out. I haven't managed to get into one yet, and I do the admin....

I don't know yet what David will tackle; I'll sort out the finer points a bit nearer the time. He's an excellent young player who recently graduated from the Newcastle folk degree course and has been touring a lot with Tom McConville and others. We were very impressed when he visited us with Tom soon after we moved into our new premises.

Of course, Dave. I went to the previous one they did for us and it was damn good fun.

Of the seventeen workshops we're putting on this year, six have already sold out and another one undoubtedly will (Martin Carthy on Sunday 12th. December). This is a pretty good take-up rate and shows how popular they are.

I can't help noticing that whenever I post news of an individual workshop or a year's workshop programme, or the Lewes Favourites tunes practice sessions, or Concertinas Anonymous, the Mudcatters who delight in complaining that folk clubs are moribund and encourage poor standards of performance fail to comment or congratulate us on what we are doing. Fortunately plenty of other people appreciate our efforts and support us, so I don't lose any sleep over it, but I do find it faintly amusing.

I should have mentioned that Jody Kruskal's concertina workshop on 29th. October is in conjunction with the International Concertina Association AGM, but will be open to non-members. In fact it will be an opporunity to meet a few ICA members socially and find out what the organisation gets up to, as well as getting help and inspiration from an American master of the Anglo concertina.

The International Concertina Association has a rather wizzy website these days with plenty to listen to as well as to read.

Seven out of our seventeen workshops in 2010 sold out. Anyone who runs workshops will probably confirm that this is a respectable success rate.

I've been to two of the Lewes Saturday Folk workshops this year - Ben Paley (violin) in March and Martin Carthy in December - and they were both very interesting and instructive.

The interest is actually not only - or necessarily - in the advice and tuition that they offer. It's also in talking to them, chatting informally over lunch and generally getting an insight into their approach to their music.

I'm looking forward to going to a few more in 2011...

Thanks to Valmai and her colleagues for making all of this possible. I think that Lewes (with Valmai, Bryan, Vic and Tina and colleagues at the heart of it) and all the music that flows out of it, is one of the richest and most vibrant areas of the English folk scene. I'm sure there are other equally vibrant areas in other parts of the country - and long may they flourish!

I always look at the Lewes workshop threads on Mudcat. It always looks an interesting set. Unfortunately, it's a long way from Middlesbrough to Lewes, so actually being able to attend any is not really on.

I did have the pleasure of meeting Valmai and Bryan at Whitby last year (I am writing this half an hour into 2011 - how sad is that?) and thoroughly enjoyed the session they ran.
