Subject: Eostar (Spring Equinox) & Easter Carols

Rog came home this evening and asked me to start a thread on this, as he thinks it would be interesting to hear what everyone may be planning to sing/play for these events. He also thinks, as do I, that it would be interesting to hear a bit of your history of the holidays and the music, if you are so inclined.

I put "@Easter" in the DT search and came up with a few songs, but would like to know of more.

Thanks!

kat & Rog

For something quite different with regard to Easter, go to American Memory and enter Juan B Rael in Search: American Memory

Item 7 on the list is "Introduction to the New Mexican Alabado." An alabado is a religious hymn, part of the folklore of New Mexico and southern Colorado. The spiritual music of the Spanish who settled in this large area, starting in the 16th century, is little known outside of the region.
The culture is in its last days; the flagellants persist in perhaps only half a dozen of the small rural communities, and only a few old people remember the folk songs, which used to be numerous. The beliefs have been fought by the Catholic hierarchy for many years; their persistance into the the 20th century speaks for the dogged independence of these people.
Audio is provided for all of the songs in the Rael Collection.

The young have adopted the customs and music of the greater 'Anglo' community, which has swamped the region. Also contributing to change are the more dynamic modern Mexican and Tejano cultures, as people from these cultures have also come to the region.

The next 60 items (to 67) in the list are the Easter, nativity and other feast or saint day spiritual songs, given in both Spanish and English. Item eight discusses the Spanish feasts, and item nine provides the texts and translations of the wedding songs.

John Roberts and Tony Barrand have recorded a wonderful collection of spring carols. Most are Christian, though the pagan roots are obviousl. But all of them are delightful. Go to their web page. I'm sure you can find it.

The Oxford Book of Carols has carols for all year. I don't know a lot of them, but anyway, listed for Easter to Ascension Day are:

My Dancing Day (part 3) = "Before Pilate the Jews me brought..."
Easter Carol = "Cheer up, Friends and Neighbours..."(French)
Christ the Lord is Risen
Easter Eggs (Russian)
Gabriel's Message does away
How Brightly Beams the Morning Star
Festival Carol = "How great the harvest is..." (Dutch)
My Dancing Day (part 2) = "Into the desert I was led..."
All in the Morning (part 2) = "It was on Holy Wednesday..."
Now Glad of Heart be Everyone (German)
Sans Day Carol = "Now the holly bears a berry..."
Hilariter = "The whole bright world rejoices now..." (German)
The World Itself Keeps Easter Day
The Secret Flower = "This child was born..."
Athens = "T'was about the dead of night..."
Wondrous works (part 2) = "When they bereaved..."

We'll probably be singing the usual "Thine be the glory" etc. Then I have got to rush off as we are morris dancing an hour's drive away!

Andrea

Here's the song list for John and Tony's "To Welcome in the Spring". Click around the Golden Hind site for ordering info. It's a great recording!
