Anyone got a notion as to how I can convert all my CDs to 12" vinyl?

Thanks.

You need the machine that will melt or cut a playable groove into vinyl. They may have machines these days that are affordable to the home enthusiast but I'd very much doubt it. Maybe affordable to a small-time operation record company.

Here is a starter kit that starts at about €3,200.00 (not including turntable).

This one clocks in at AUD$17,995.00.

Here is a list of companies that press vinyl records, although it doesn't say if they do onesy-twosies or larger lots only.

But if you do that, they still won't have the analog sound. I think once they've been digitized, they lose all of the texture that make analog recordings sound so much better than CDs.

I'm not so sure. Back well before CD's were a blip on the horizon (mid to late 70s IIRC), record producers were recording master tapes digitally to then cut analogically into the vinyl. I don't remember anybody complaining at the time -- then again I didn't read any highfalutin' hi-fi mags either.

I just ordered a nifty little mixer for connecting a turntable to a computer. You can run the turntable directly through the mixer, so you don't need an amplifier. It's built in to the mixer. It has a ton of controls in the softward for trying to get the best sound. I got it primarily to burn old cassettes onto CDs before they deteriorate too badly. It's in the mail, and once I get it if it does a good job and is user friendly I'll post more information on a new thread. It only costs $59.95, which will be a steal if it works well.

Melissa is close, but I'd like to talk to CarolC about getting an analog sound back into a digital pig.

Schroedinger's pig - before you open the box, it's digital. Once you open it, it's analog.

Well, I don't know about Cd's to vinyl, but here's a link to a free download, that takes audio files, from radio, vinyl, or cassettes, and turns them to digital, so you can make CD's or MP3's out of them...and it's free. I've had mine for quite a while!

I think (according to Schroedinger) as long as the pig is still in the box, it is both analog and digital.

So there's your answer, Seamus. Leave the pig in the box.

"Schroedinger's pig - before you open the box, it's digital. Once you open it, it's analog."

Actually once you open the box, it's bacon. So, depending on whether it's breakfast time or not....

You guys need lose the pig. It is a seriously flawed proposition.

What we need is a legitimate channelling clairvoyant to resurrect all the dead performers, get him/her into studio adapted appropriately to the artist's respective time record on tracks because you will have to use the same clairvoyant to channel performers who worked together. Put the tracks together and repress to vinyl format.

Simples!

Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl?

Would it save steps to have the clairvoyant channel the artists directly into the vinyl?

..that way, I think maybe the records could be played backward to make artists.

Surely the schrodinger's pig in a box question depends on whether you light the gas burner in the box.
As for the vinyl transfer, your first step is to train a suitable dog to sit and stare into the horn of the grammar phone whilst you wind it backwards...
Quack!

The wonderful by-product of this exercise is that after the conversion of CDs to LPs, 45s or, preferrably, 78s, one is left with an almost endless store of coasters for parties, BBQs etc. CDs were originally coasters until someone thought, "Let's put music on these!"

This from a man who, many many years ago was walking in the park with a girlfriend when she told him "My Mum has some 78s of a cowboy singer called Jimmy Rodgers!"
After rushing home I discovered she had four which had all been converted into flowerpot holders!!!!!

There's a thought! Why convert CDs to vinyl when you could download MP3s and turn them into plant-pot holders!

Couldn't be any harder than sandpapering a double-Bass into a violin.

Best idea yet! How about converting a Lagerphone into 12 dozen Guinness?

What could possibly go wrong?

There are of course numerous plugins for music producers that are designed to make pristine digital audio sound like vinyl, such as Steinberg's Grungelizer which has an interface allowing you to add different levels of surface noise (at 33/45/78 rpm), mains hum (50 or 60hz), wear on the stylus and recording date (1900-present)

Maybe something by Shaun Cassidy or Rick Springfield?

CDs as coasters, hhmm?
Skeet? Rearview mirror suncatchers?
If you put scotch tape over the hole, can you record over them, as with cassettes?
Tape them over the hole of an acoustic guitar so there's no feedback.

Elton John sunglasses?

Any other ideas?

Some people actually hang them in fruit trees around here to ward off birds. I think mostly in cherry trees, but I couldn't swear to it.

I made a couple of those bowls when I was a kid. One of them was see-through red. Mom made sure I didn't use anything that was special. We still have a lot of 78s, as does my sister.

78s are harder to make into bowls, Kat. They usually break into arrowheads.

To hear what real music sounds like, try this.

Madame Pamita

Click on Music Room and then "Madame Pamita's Waxworks".

Only recorded last year but on equipment from the 1890s!

I think I'm in love!! Move over Emmylou!

"I went to a PowWow where one of the dancers had a cd in the center of his bustle.. "

That's great, Melissa. A wonderful idea!

I used to work in a fabric store, and one day a mother and son came in because he had been told to make 'an Indian costume.' He listened, fascinated, as I told him about the old pow-wow costumes with 'jingles' made from the tops of cans and rattles made from aluminum salt shakers.

Now CD's undergo transmogrification.
============
I don't sense any difference between the sound quality of vinyl and of CD's. And my hearing is acute. Is this a case of The Emperor's New Clothes?

Is this a case of The Emperor's New Clothes?

I think so. Although my hearing is far from acute. I think people miss the crackle and hum. Now I have also heard there is a difference between a solid state and a tube-fired amplifier. But I've never heard the latter so I am not in a position to judge.
