Subject: RE: Accidental names in songs From: Genie Date: 16 Aug 07 - 11:59 PM I guess the Psalms in the Bible would count as songs, but in any case, the 23rd Psalm has oft been set to music or adapted as a song. It mentions at least 3 names: Shirley Goodness and Mercy Shell Those two ladies follow us all the rest of our days. |
Subject: RE: Accidental names in songs From: Joybell Date: 17 Aug 07 - 02:30 AM Myrtle Green and her friend Bracken Brown (although I've never actually come across anyone named Bracken). And there's -- "Where are the Joys I have met in the morning?" A question posed by Burns. I wasn't one of them. I didn't meet him in the afternoon either. My name comes and goes in singers hearts quite often too. Cheers Joy |
Subject: RE: Accidental names in songs From: Genie Date: 17 Aug 07 - 04:56 PM Then there's that guy from back in the early 1900s who was forever "blowing Bubbles" -- whoever she or he was. (Beverly Sills, maybe?) |
Subject: RE: Accidental names in songs From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 17 Aug 07 - 07:00 PM Our Mudcatter Jerry Rasmussen, when young, heard people singing "So Long It's Been Good To Know Ya" and he thought they were singing about a Mafia hood guy named (get ready)----Fingers Gonolia!!!!! I doubt he'd mind me telling this 'cause he's probably forgotten all about it now that he's old. ;-). Art |
Subject: RE: Accidental names in songs From: Joybell Date: 17 Aug 07 - 07:17 PM Back in the 60s I spent long hours searching the atlas for a town in the US called "Horleye" As in: "Ten years ago on a cold dark night, there was somebody killed in the town Horeleye" If only there'd been a Mudcat then. Cheers, Joy |

Subject: RE: Accidental names in songs From: GUEST,Jim Carroll Date: 18 Aug 07 - 02:19 PM Reversing the question - 'Voice of the People' gives the song usually known as 'Kilkenny Louse-house' as 'Burke's Engine', a mishearing by the editors of the name, Buck St John (pro. Singeon)'. It has been indexed in Roud as Burke's Engine'. Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: Accidental names in songs From: Genie Date: 19 Aug 07 - 03:41 AM SharonA, those 3 names you mentioned in your last post are from the song "Doe Ramie," of course. There are also many songs about women named "Alma." E.g., Alma Loving (Beatles) Alma Trials (folk spiritual) Alma Luster (mentioned in the song "You Can't Get a Man With A Gun" Alma Tomorrows (sung by Frank Sinatra) As for that Robbie Burns song we sing at New Year's Eve, I probably should have said: "Should Aldo Quentin's be forgotten, nay, vibrato mine? Should Aldo Quentin's be forgot and Daisy Valdlang's sign? For Raoul Lang's sign, Medea, for Raoul Lang's sign, Will, take a cup o' kindness yet for Raoul Lang's syne." |

Subject: RE: Accidental names in songs From: bubblyrat Date: 19 Aug 07 - 06:54 AM So far, I go for Yul Hermy-Singh, and Lief Sogreno ( friend of Jack E. Buoy ! ). |
Subject: RE: Accidental names in songs From: Genie Date: 19 Aug 07 - 04:00 PM Yes, both Lief Sogrino and his sister Liv appear in folk songs. So does Robin Banks. (Actually, the female lead singer for the band Howling Gael in their second incarnation was named that, too.) Then there's that cowboy Ty Yaiyippee who is often being called to "come" in western songs. Not to mention: Ty Mekangaroo (down) Claus DeDoor (who appears in the Kingston Trio song "San Miguel") Luka Lee and Luka Weather (You'll find them in the song "High Barbary") Luka Yonder pops up in other folk songs And "I'm Lou Kinova, afore Liv Clover ..." |
