Subject: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: billybob Date: 31 May 11 - 08:57 AM The local council would like to revive the Walton festival! Any ideas out there? Wendy |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST,lively Date: 31 May 11 - 09:55 AM Do you have any real ale / camra pubs suitable for sessions? Would it be best slightly off the peak season, as less likely to clash with the candyfloss and lager tourists? Some kind of complimentary focus both on 'new' and 'old' Walton might be good: Presently, do you have any folk-friendly bands within the local area? Looking back, what 'folk traditions' are associated to Walton? (eg: would a chanty session / workshop be fitting?) Contact and get local traders on board to help fund? |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST,lively Date: 31 May 11 - 09:57 AM A display of photographs, or images from local artists, celebrating Walton's 'folk art' in the town hall? Bound to be a shed load of it there. |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST,lively Date: 31 May 11 - 10:01 AM 'Fish and chips' plus music somewhere. I don't quite know what I'm aiming at here.. A scheduled beach combing / storytelling walk. |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST Date: 31 May 11 - 10:18 AM Two local folk based bands you could talk to: http://www.onionband.com/ http://www.waltonwebs.co.uk/dna/ This pub which offers real ale and live music might be worth talking to: http://www.localfoodanddrinkguide.co.uk/venues/ipswich/walton-on-the-naze/159 lively |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST Date: 31 May 11 - 10:41 AM With reference to shanty workshop/session or similar, some more people you could consider getting on board: http://www.myspace.com/waltononthenazeshantycrew |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST,lively Date: 31 May 11 - 11:30 AM Something of an out-there tangent this, but would it be worth considering a session or display of some kind exploring traditional type music from the various immigrant communities too? I'm aware that there is quite a lot of sympathy for the BNP in Walton, as such a folk festival might possibly represent an opportunity for some valuable cultural & community exchange? If you thought it worthwhile to explore the idea - without 'politicising' the event - you could consider seeking further advice from the team at Folk Against Facism: http://www.folkagainstfascism.com/ |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: Alan Day Date: 31 May 11 - 12:13 PM Is the restaurant area still on the pier that would be a good venue ? Al |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: The Sandman Date: 31 May 11 - 12:18 PM alternatively the festival could have a theme, walton on the naze maritime , or walton the naze free reed[accordion concertinas harmonicas] festival, walton on the naze banjo festival, which could include old timey, bluegrass, irish tenor banjo, classical banjo. walton on the naze folk and roots, or walton international folk song and dance. |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST,lively Date: 31 May 11 - 12:25 PM "walton international folk song and dance." Hate to suggest it (as I might attract rebuttals), but you might even be more likely to get some kind of grant to assist in the funding for such an idea. |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: Alan Day Date: 31 May 11 - 12:57 PM I do not know where your facts come from "lively" and completely irrelevant to the subject under discussion. I would have thought that with Maggie Thatcher being born about a mile away at Frinton it would be more of a Conservative area. Al |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST,lively Date: 31 May 11 - 01:09 PM Frinton is a somewhat different place to Walton, I know them both quite well. My "facts" for what they are (or are not) worth, came from a news article some months ago, in which the BNP did very nicely in drumming up interest there. It is irrelevant, if the OP considers it to be so - as indeed is their perogative. I intended no offence, and I have no inclination to continue this tangent further. |

Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: Alan Day Date: 31 May 11 - 01:50 PM You are correct Dick I remember now it is my Wife that was born in Frinton and Her Grandparents lived in Walton, hence my interest in this project. Al |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST,lively Date: 31 May 11 - 02:00 PM Sounds like your wife's parents 'upgraded', as did my own family. Frinton is quite a classic old Tory area, though the beach is lovely. You certainly won't find groups of skins wandering about there as in Walton: diligent citizens would be contacting the neighbourhood watch sharpish if so! In Frinton, the baldness is not by choice rather than a consequence of the age of the demographic ;-) |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: Alan Day Date: 31 May 11 - 03:12 PM I have walked many a time up the steps from the beach to the house nr the station and Jenny's Grandfather ran the Pier Restaurant.I have a small painting of Walton which shows an old steam ship beside the jetty which was pre the pier. Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: The Barden of England Date: 31 May 11 - 04:38 PM A festival I always loved. Hope you have some good ideas billybob. John Barden |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: Alan Day Date: 31 May 11 - 04:53 PM I rather like the "International " idea particularly as you are so near to Harwich. Good luck with this, as I may be moving over to that direction and I hope to support it sometime in the future. Al |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: billybob Date: 01 Jun 11 - 06:04 AM Lovely to hear from you John, that was the response I was hoping for, The Mayor came to see me to see if Bill and I would consider a revival, we ran for 17 very sucessful years. I am hoping that all the old faithful will be in touch and maybe from small beginings???? (off subject, Maggie always visited Frinton to buy her shoes as her sister had a fruit farm a few miles away, and Frinton is actually quite a nice place, lots of young people too, but we like to keep our old grumpy image as we like to keep the place secret so we can enjoy it!! ;-). Back to the festival, I think the old format would work, a very friendly festival of dance and song,in a very pretty seaside town. Wendy |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: Alan Day Date: 01 Jun 11 - 06:45 AM I will definitely try to get there Wendy Al |

Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: billybob Date: 03 Jun 11 - 04:49 AM looks like this may be possible, some of the original committee were at my fathers funeral yesterday and were very interested in getting involved.September 2012 would be the time if we go ahead. |

Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: VirginiaTam Date: 08 Jun 11 - 03:44 PM re "walton international folk song and dance" I work for Essex County Council Heritage and Arts who works in tandem with ECC Cultural Diversity. I can put you in contact someone who can hook you up with Polish, Asian and African dance and music groups. He worked with Colchester last year on a Cultural Diversity festival held in Colchester Castle Gardens. It was very successful. They had bhangra dance lessons, drumming, tai chi, Morris, and song performances from local choral groups and individuals and some poetry reading. Arts Development Team might suggest some recently formed community choirs and dance troupes. They certainly may be able to help direct you toward funding. As for myself, I really like Morris and trad English song, but I am defo not a supporter of BNP. It is just my taste and that from a Southern Yank (what a contradiction in terms). If not an international festival, perhaps one with a historical theme. http://www.walton-on-the-naze.com/History/history.htm#Walton's Victorian Heyday Could play on the whole seaside resort in Victorian times. Work with local schools to provide, artwork and performances. There are Victorian Societies who dress in period clothes and visit places as they do the Dickens festivals in Rochester. I am certain Essex Record Office has a wealth of material to feed into this and might do an exhibition of documents and photographs at the record office to help promote your festival. There may also be funding for going the heritage angle. Once all is sussed I can add festival info to Essex Explore Culture website. Free promotion of the event. Wahey! |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: billybob Date: 09 Jun 11 - 08:29 AM Gosh this is begining to really look good. We are having a house concert( in marquee) in September , could be a good time for us all to get together for a day to brainstorm? We could turn it into a day of folk and planning? Sunday September 25th. |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: Alan Day Date: 09 Jun 11 - 08:36 AM Please let me know the details,I may be a Suffolkite by then Al |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST,Guest Date: 11 Jun 11 - 09:31 AM The Onion Band? That's scraping the barrel a bit. But they do have a rather tasty PA system ;o) |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST,John from "Elsie`s Band" Date: 12 Jun 11 - 06:20 AM Wendy, give us a call. It`s a while now since we last did Walton. |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: stallion Date: 13 Jun 11 - 04:47 AM We were on with the Onion Band last year, a bit chalk and cheese, I couldn't see anyone turning up to see us liking Onion Band stuff and vica versa, awesome PA though (we didn't use amplification!) It happened twice last year, we preceeded a band called Happy Cats who were very good but not an ideal mixture. This year we haven't had anything like it. In Malton and York we preceeded a girl duo "Two" who are very very good and although do contempory self penned stuff not a million miles from our audience and sat quite well in the schedule. I suppose its about bums on seats again! |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: GUEST,Pug Date: 15 Jun 11 - 11:23 AM The Onion Band PA has been upgraded since last year - Turbosound! Presumably stallion, you are referring to The Riverside Folk Weekend in Ipswich. We did feel a little out of place there but after all we were a late replacement for someone who had pulled out. |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: billybob Date: 17 Jun 11 - 07:55 AM Those Onions do have a very large following in East Anglia, and Pug was on the first Walton Festival Committee, we are going on the lines of " The Original Walton Folk Festival" and hope for lots of old friends helping and supporting us.Elsie's Band would be very welcome! I am getting rather exited! Wendy |

Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: billybob Date: 01 Aug 11 - 05:05 AM An update, assuming that we are able to plan a Small Festival for September 2012, my son Christopher is project manageing a new Theatre and Arts Centre in Great Yarmouth, ( see the web site St georges Chapel Great Yarmouth.)It opens in Febuary 2012. He has said maybe he could put a folk weekend on there at the same time as Walton, then the artists could swop over rather like the V Festival does. Meanwhile hope to see you all on September 25th this year, I hope Christopher will join us so we can have some real brainstorming as well as singing and eating and drinking? Wendy |
Subject: RE: Walton on the Naze Folk Festival From: billybob Date: 03 Aug 11 - 07:57 AM Just had a brilliant meeting with one of the Original Festival Organisers, we have been talking venues, camping etc.Next step meeting the local Councillors! We think working with Yarmouth will be a good step forward. Provisional date for September 7th 8th 9th 2012, but all welcome on Sept 25th this year. |
