There is the obvious reasons, lyric or music search, etc. But many threads (if not most) have little dealing with music. > We have the philosophers, the Spiritual, the good ole boys; people from every avenue. > We keep coming back, selectively responding to threads. Some for fun, some for needed help or advice. > I have seen real compassion for people we do not know. I have seen anger, impertinence, rudeness. I have seen good time humor. But why do YOU mudcat? I guess I do it for many reasons; to learn,to pass some time, but probably mostly for a sense of affirmation. Why do YOU?

Beyond the endless music knowledge I gain from being involved in this group, I would say I mudcat because I am a Mudcatter. I feel part of this community and it means a great deal to me to share, support and hang-out with my Mudcat buddies.

Welcome to the 'Cat.

We come here because of every reason you mention and myriad more. We come here because most of us never find this much intelligence, knowledge, caring, compassion, humor, and diversity anywhere in the 3-D world.

I come here to be challenged and to learn. I come here to give what I can and to teach. I come here to laugh and to cry, to try to brighten another's day and have my own brightened. I come here to think, to rant and rave, to get angry, and to get good advice when life has blinded me to the truth. I come here for the companionship and I come for the music.

I come here to listen to the depth of folk knowledge from Rick, to see the true compassion of kat, to see the wisdom of Art and Sandy, the bottomless heart of Mick, the brilliance of Peter, the poetry of Shambles, the exuberance of Joe Offer, the earthy beauty of WW, the talent and wicked intelligence of the Swans, the cool logic of Jeri, the mature innocense of Bonnie, the common sense and humor of Leej, the straight truths of Sinsull, the kindness and logic of Bill D.............and I could keep on listing these things into the hundreds. So many fine people in one place.

And the true beauty is that for every attribute I give to one of the above, I could give to all of the above!!! Where else can you find this? I could list over a hundred 'Catters and tell you why I value each one. And even better? The place has a core group of denizens, but people come here every day and add to this wonderful mix.....and there's always room for another. I still go back to something Sandy Paton once said:

"I always wanted to live somewhere like that."

............or maybe I'm just bored.

I'm obsessed with "roots" music. Blues, jugband, celtic, folk, gospel, bluegrass, oldtime, and all the others. People naturally want to hang out with people of similar interests - and this is where I find them. I learn a lot here about the music I love. And one or twice a week I'm reminded of a record in my collection that I haven't listened to in ages because of one of the conversations here. The folks here for the most part are well informed about a varity of subjects that I want to know more about. And , most of the folks I meet here are people I'd have over for dinner and a pickin' session if the distences allowed.

Besides - I can't dance and it's too wet to plow.

I've posted on a number of different chat groups, most of them seem to degenerate into adolescent abuse very quickly. I came here originally looking for the lyrics to a song (which I found in the forum database in about 15 seconds) and stayed around as the level of the conversation and good manners was so obviously higher than anything I had come across before. It made me laugh, it made me think, it made me want to be part of it, so now I've joined. I have my reservations, but they are chiefly to do with the horribly addictive nature of the forum and my phone bill.

Morticia! You beat me to it. I wanted to say "I think therefore I Mudcat!"

But all that has been said goes for me as well. I've been here for a few months (goodness it's been 6 months already!) and have enjoyed every minute I spend here. I have learned and grown (and groaned) with all the others. I have cursed flamers, fought the Taliban with Sergeant Kat, read the threads, asked questions and got answers.

Long live the Mudcat!

Because there ain't nothing like it in the world. Where even after the roughest day, or blackest hour you can ask, say, inform, listen, find out but most of all share.

When you are high (NOT LIKE THAT!!-I mean happy) or low or just fair to middling, even when work is filling my almost every spare moment there is still time to log on. I might not log onto anything else, but I am always here at sometime-even if I've nothing to add, but just want to find out.

It's just a great place to be with such an excellent bunch of people, even though we sometimes differ with each other. But that is not suprising when all humans are unique-just like Mudcat.

It's been said about a dozen times before: I came here for the music and I stayed because of the people. I have friends here, for whom I care very much, and since they don't live closeby, I meet them under the Mudcat Moon. And that's why there is BS. You can only sustain a friendship so long talking about the origin of a folksong. You gotta dip below the surface because that's how you get to know your friends.

Damn! I'm a lucky woman.

I don't have any experence with other forums but are there any out there where the members go out of their way to meet face to face like Mudcatters do?

Consider the parties, the festivals, the get togethers, the get aways, the adventure trips and tours. Mudcatters make a point to meet in the real world and get to know one another outside of the electronic stream. We are joined by our music and the desire to share that music.

Naemason - there are a few others I know of. some of the cooking forums get together to cook meals; the alt-fairs-renaissance news group stages "invasions" of renaissance faires around the country (invasion in this case just means scheduling so as many get to meet as possible). But the mudcat seems to be pretty unique.

And on a more serious note --

I was just telling a new friend today at lunch about the Mudcat. And I absolutely got chill bumps talking about the idea that we're talking right now, this very minute, with people all over the world. And even if it's asynchronous (which I'm actually learning to spell without looking it up), it's still a conversation. Bill Sables can be writing something to us over in the U.K., and Alison will respond from Australia (as soon as she gets back from Ireland) and then Escamillo pops up with something from South America and Rick Fielding adds his two-bits from Canada ... and on and on. It just amazes me how small our world is when we're in this community.

And it gives me an unbelievable travel bug. Since Allan C and Bill Sables Mudcat World Domination Tour this summer, I've become convinced that every vacation for the rest of my life will be a musical vacation, and that I'll try to plan my travels around places where I'm most likely to bump into a klatche of 'Catters. (and, if you're ever in the Rocky Mountains ... ) If I won the lottery tomorrow, I would instantly start a Mudcateers World Domination Tour fund so we could all just freely visit each other any ol' time we wanted to step out of the Cyber world for a while and into the 3D one. And then I'd buy a big bus and paint it in paisley and off we'd go ... (wait ... that's another movie ...)

I've just never had the opportunity to hang out with this many people who loved music as much as I do -- and having run into Mudcat almost two years ago (!!!), I've expanded my musical knowledge unbelievably. And spent WAY too much money on CDs, but hey... every silver lining has its cloud.

I'm one of those people who'd probably go to school for the rest of her life if I didn't have to make a living, so the Mudcat fulfills that desire to keep learning new stuff. For every genre or musical form represented here, there's an entire history to learn. Very cool ...

I've learned to play the guitar (somewhat) over the past few months, thanks to encouragement by people here. I've certainly learned many, many new songs.

So, in spite of the headaches and occasional spats among posters, this place continues to enrich me in ways I simply couldn't have imagined -- and didn't even fully grok until I'd been around for several months. I make my living sitting in front of my computer and I actually have bought a kitchen timer to make sure I don't spend more time on the Mudcat than I do making a living. But I'm not addicted ... no, really. Wouldn't YOU rather sit in a coffee shop and shoot the breeze than work for a living???

I LOVE you guys!!!

Ok. Fine. I don't love ALL of you. But I like you pretty much.

But like moonjen said you can talk that out and still want to connect--I would say that good music, like all good art, is not about itself. It's about life and everything in it.

Do you know what I mean?

Because this is where the best people are. Because of the kind of community this is. Because I've never encountered a group of people who are, as a group, more literate, articulate, interesting, and intelligent, than the people here in the Mudcat.

Because I can communicate with and even sometimes make friends with people who live all over the world, in all different kinds of cultures.

Because I can talk about Finnish music with an Australian ex-patriate who lives in Austria. (Did I get that right Andy M.? Sorry, can't do the dots over your last name.)

Because there are people here who like accordions.

And because you're here, now.

What Catrín said about what Sailor Dan said about whatDave said about what Kat/Katlaughing said about what Spaw said except different. When I got here these people were a bunch of words on a screen, but they have become as real to me as any in the "3-D world". I can't wait to get home sometimes and check out what's going on in this community. Sometimes I post something and I can't wait to see who posts what in reply. You can look at the posted list at the top of a thread and see who's been there and you say "This oughta be good!" I have friends here that I've never met in person but nonetheless they're friends. I've had back and forth posting conversations with people that have been a blast. I've learned the dangers of conjunctions and the necessity of punctuation. I've found that when you hurt my friends here, it hurts me as well. All this leads me to call this at least a community but closer to the truth, a family. I'm glad to be a part of it.

And besides, the only time the voices in my head stop is when I'm here.
Slán,
Rich

I have met some wonderful people here, who have become real friends. It makes a pleasant change to be able to talk about folk music without being ridiculed (well not often) - some think its big jumpers and fingers in ears. I like the easy way we all get on, the personalities, the worries, the arguments, the knowledge, the tolerance - all sorts of things. Its not perfect, but so what, I wouldn't change a thing.
