Sorry I won't be there this year, good luck GS!.

Don't know why you're getting so nervous, wonder how Jane is feeling!

See you all soon,

BBP

theres nothing rational about attacks of nerves - they come unbidden, and often unexpectedly.

i think its just a nice thing to be invited like this. try and enjoy it.

Apparently Eric Bogle entered The Band Played Waltzing Matilda for a song competition one time early in his career - and came second.

Look at it this way Mike, what are we two going to do if they boo our songs off the stage and shout rubbish! Get off!

Give up song writing.....? I don't think so.

Perhaps it wasn't nerves after all just lack of sleep I suspect. I feel fine now. Best wishes, Mike.

So, who were the winners, and what are their real names? I think we should be told.

Hate to cut in but can anyone help me on how to locate a song knowing only general info and possibly one lyric from it? having a heck of a time trying to pin it down.

That depends on the song, what you know about it, and what you are prepared to tell the people you want to help you.

Does it have anything to do with this year's Lincolnshire competition? If it does, then you are in the right place.

If it doesn't, then you aren't. Please use the onsite search engine ("Lyrics and Knowledge Search"; it's at the top of every page here) to look for a phrase from the lyric as you remember it; don't forget to try alternative spellings and/or phrasings.

If you draw a complete blank, start a new thread to ask your question. Be sure to include as much information as you can, so that people can help you most effectively.

Now, can we return to the competition, please? It really would be useful to know what happened and to whom, without having to struggle with all these confusing pseudonyms.

The result was as follows

Song - Writer - Performer
1. The Days We Went A Drinking At The Show - Jim Hancock - Geoff Convery & Keith Brown
2. Ross Trawlers Return - Michael Hill - Jane Kitchen
3. Inbred And Proud - Glyn Pout/Trevor Glen/Mick Brommell - Billinger Ruffs

The day we went drinking at the show -song about getting pissed at an agricultural event won - sort hey up, didn't we sup some sort of thing.

Inbred and proud won the performance trophy...quite a witty take on kissing cousins in Lincolnshire villages. very deftly executed. It reminded me of a teaching practice i did back in 60's in a Linconshire village9which will remain unnamed). the history lecturer at college had told us to ask us to show the kids the schools log from the last century - to show them the history of their own environment. the headmaster said no bloody way - apparently all the village was screwing each other at that point, and EVERYBODY was related to each other.

My song got nowhere but you can hear it if you log onto my site. I'm really proud of it and I've got it playing immediately you log on!

What an interesting experience to be in the audience for a change (my song didn't get to the final). Mike and I missed the warmth and cameraderie we have experienced back stage as competitors and I empathised with the drooping shoulders and general knackeredness of the judges!
The winning song had a suggestion of Keith Marsden about it. The competition began after he died, but he would probably have written a song along these lines had he been around. I thought it was the right choice although we were rooting for Mike and Jane all the way.
Work is an extra pain after such a late night..........will try to perk up in time for Market Rasen Folk Club tonight.

felt that there should have been a bit of encouragement for the youngsters. you couldn't argue with the decision - and yet I tend to think there should be brownie points for kids for not being soccer hooligans - well for taking a night off being one!

further thought
what the judges should have done is make up a best newcomers prize on the spot. you see what the kids wanted was a bit of kudos, abit of something to put on their website - and what would it have cost anybody?

as it is they might go away and say, oh we tried that and it was a bit of a closed shop - all old stuff. and if they say that to their fellow young musicians, it might dissuade other young people from having a go, and that would be a pity.

Al - our remit was to choose what we thought were the top 3. Anything else would have to be agreed up front.
However, it is worth putting forward for next year.

There is a young musicians competition for Lincolnshire, and that is the competition they should enter.

I hope I'm right in thinking that I'm one of the 'kids' (Doonvarna).

Thursday was the third time in four years we've been in the final! We didn't get in last year. The first time we entered (2002) we were actually placed third! When the competition comes around, we stick to our beliefs about writing folk songs and stick to our own folk-rock style. If we get into the finals we're delighted (and a little surprised)! We never go into the finals expecting anything other than to enjoy ourselves playing music as our style is so different to anything else on the night and probably that is entered. You're right though, it does give us something to put on our website! (www.doonvarna.co.uk - midway through overhaul at present)

If you're interested check out the website for our four entries to date: 2002 Slash Hollow, 2003 Tom Otter, 2004 Splintered Wood and Iron (non-finalist) and 2005 Guymer's Warning.

Thanks for all the kind comments, especially the 'kids' reference!

Doonvarna, thoroughly enjoyed your performance both the warm up and the song entered, as you so rightly say 'stick to our beliefs' it should only ever be that way otherwise it's pandering to others. All the finalists deserved to be there and the diversity of style and content was great. If they had all been of the same ilk there would have been no point in the competition at all. Excellent performance many thanks for a great evening to all the artists!!!

Doonvarna...you did get a mention and thoroughly deserved. Your Folk/Rock style impressed me and so did that gorgeous flautist you have playing with you. My entry came second and I'm still not sure if your entry was better than mine........At the end of the day it is up to the judges to decide and they have a difficult job! Your work is good so keep it up and see you next year. Best wishes, Mike.
Author of "Ross Trawlers return" which came second to a deserving first.
