We are planning a cross country RV trip starting in April and I'm wondering if anyone would care to share their experiences comments or stories about getting the folk music going at campgroun

Sounds like a great time! You should look up some of the festival guides, and try to go to a few on your trip across country. I'm assuming USA?

We stopped one day at a campground in New Brunswick, Canada, and my husband and I took out a banjo and guitar and started singing and playing. Within 5 seconds, some guy literally came running with his guitar. Spent the rest of the evening having a fine jam.

Another time in Pennsylvania, we played awhile and then some missionary guy rounded us up to join a gospel session in the barn.

Just start playing, and you'll attract lots of listeners and maybe a few pickers. (But be careful about quiet hours and playing too late near your neighbors, something you usually don't have to worry about at a festival).

Barbara uses the same tactic I do. Start playing and they will come. I do it all the time. And if your trip includes time in Michigan, let me know. I will come and help you get one started. In fact I know a number of great camp areas within 15 to 90 minutes from my home. But you will have to put up with Irish.***GRIN***

All the best,

Big Mick

You know Mick just said what I was thinking. Give us a basic itinerary and you can probably spend the nite singin' and playin' with a fellow 'catter. I wouldn't mind doing that myself.

Hey Mick, nice to have you back!

Dan and Elaine, another thing I like to do is leave an extra instrument or two around while we're playing. If someone walks by who can play the thing, they'll usually let you know, and you've got a jam. But this can be risky, unless you know the crowd (like at a festival) or the instrument is unbreakable.

You never said where you were going to be travelling, but if it's in the eastern US, you might try the Mt. Airey (NC) old time fiddler's convention. Great music, great people, and great jams. Last weekend in May, if I recall correctlt.

Let me try again...Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park has jams on Saturday night all year round and lots of music events. It is at the intersection (more or less) of I75 and I10 in North Florida...A great place to stop on the way to southern Florida from Michigan in your Winnebago (which is Indian for stagnanat standing water, as Don Groomes used to say!)...harpgirl
