Subject: Help name an Irish band From: alison Date: 25 Feb 98 - 06:05 PM Hi I know this isn't a song request..... but just between us friends........ We're trying to think of a name for an Irish / Australian band. (2 fellas, 1 girl playing a mixture of Irish, Celtic and Aussie stuff.) I can't think of anything that hasn't already been used. Anyone got any suggestions???? Slainte Alison |

It got my 4 year old running into the room to see what I was laughing at!!! Slainte Alison |

Subject: RE: Help name an Irish band From: Jerry Friedman Date: 27 Feb 98 - 02:09 PM "Colleen and Bruce" (Would give you the chance to do a little comedy on stage about which of the blokes is Bruce. But this name is not suitable if you want to become famous and go solo.) Isn't there a place called Ayer's Rock? How about "Ayer's Shamrock"? "New South Ireland" "St. Patrick's in Fall" "Emerald" is easily the cleverest so far, but I needed the explanation. Maybe you could write a song--"I went from Ireland to Oz, Emerald Isle to Emerald City..." |
Subject: RE: Help name an Irish band From: dani Date: 27 Feb 98 - 03:20 PM Alison, I cannot for the life of me find the song I'm thinking of - neither in my head or the DT, but I'm sure I heard it on Fiona Ritchie's show. It was about the Irish going to Australia and how they pined for the home, trying to fit into a strange land. The refrain was haunting; something to do with green threads among the gold. Maybe there's an idea in it. I have the great good fortune to be on my way to the beach - perhaps in the quiet it'll come to me! |
Subject: RE: Help name an Irish band From: Alan of Australia Date: 27 Feb 98 - 05:55 PM G'day, Lots of good suggestions here, working out which not to use will be a problem. But I had no idea what a "paddy-melon" was. Now I've been told it's a smallish kangaroo. Is that true? The poem NEEDS a good tune from someone. Subject: RE: Help name an Irish band From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 02 Mar 98 - 09:59 PM Well, if you could get an Argentinian or a cowboy into the band I'd suggest The All Beef Paddies, but I guess Australia is better known for sheep. Do you want a funny name or a serious name? Maybe The Fatal Shore, after the book of that name. Shillelagh Law? (See Finnegan's Wake) Or The Whacking Sheilas (as in "whacking shillelaghs", from Arthur McBride) Sheila and the Shillelaghs? Sheel-na-Jig? (as in sheel-na-gig) (see Wonderbra thread, perhaps)Or Sheila Jig, I suppose. Summer In The Wintertime? Mutton Accordian? Dingle Dingos? Wombats of Wexford? Your theme song should be The World Turned Upside Down.

Subject: RE: Help name an Irish band From: BK Date: 02 Mar 98 - 10:42 PM The song Dani refers to is "Green Among the Gold" (1991 Steve and Rosalind Barnes). One recording is on the CD "Emigrant Eyes" by Geraldine and Danny Doyle on the Rego label, R-3018. This CD is one of my very favorites. Listen to the song, it may suggest a name something like "Green & Gold." (Also my high school colors, yuck!) Cheers, BK |

Subject: RE: Help name an Irish band From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 03 Mar 98 - 08:35 PM I've never laid eyes on a wombat, but understand it to be an Australian critter, a kind of marsupial. I think they are small harmless beasts that scurry about in the night, although for all I know there are wombats that grow as big as grizzly bears. The only marsupials we get around here are possums, a public nuisance that have been making their wicked way up from the US and sneaking into the few warm spots we have in the country. The coolest critter in Australia has to be the flying fox.

Subject: RE: Help name an Irish band From: alison Date: 03 Mar 98 - 11:54 PM Hi, You're right a wombat is a marsupial. They crawl along on all fours and grow to about the size of a coffee table. They have wiry hair and long claws which they use to burrow. They are quite cute and seem to spend most of the time asleep because it's too hot to do anything else, (an Aussie will probably correct me and tell me that they're nocturnal.... I'm not sure.) The clever thing is though... they have pouches like a kangaroo, but the pouch faces towards their back legs, so that when they are digging the pouch doesn't get full of dirt!!! Clever eh??!! Slainte Alison |
Subject: RE: Help name an Irish band From: Helen Date: 04 Mar 98 - 06:34 AM The sad thing about wombats is that I have only ever seen one live one in the wild, but I've seen way too many dead ones on the sides of the roads. They are slow walkers, minding their own business, living quiet lives, and are therefore too slow to get out of the way of speeding cars. Helen |

Subject: RE: Help name an Irish band From: Jerry Friedman Date: 04 Mar 98 - 06:22 PM What do roots have to do with travel(l)ing salespersons? Oh, wait, I think I've got it. I heard that joke about a giant panda. It dines in a restaurant, and when the waiter brings the bill, the panda draws a gun, shoots him, and walks out. The manager catches up to the panda in the street. "You can't do that!" The panda takes out a dictionary and shows the manager the entry. "Panda (n). A bearlike mammal native to western China. Eats shoots and leaves." |

Subject: RE: Help name an Irish band From: Bill D Date: 04 Mar 98 - 07:19 PM I ran across a page on wombats once that claims that wombats also love chocolate biscuits (cookies-- for those in the US)...and it says that a wombat can run VERY fast for short distances and suggests not getting between a wombat and its chocolate biscuit! a wombat running directly at the camera (you see what several hundred thousand bytes of bookmarks and an addiction to search engines can do!! *smile*) |

And, my hunger for intelligent dialog and humour whilst staring at a monitor is quelled by you folks. (Never begin a sentence with a preposition, or is that propositition, leprechaun??) Must babble, been away too long. Way, to go Alison - excellent thread!! I liked Shamorck and Shears and The Bard in the Bush. Is the double entendre of that second one universal?? Speaking of double meanings, Australia has a teacher exchange program with Canada. One tale that came back to my Division was that of a young Canadian teacher that was at a high school rally and suggested to her students that they go out in full force and "root for the boys"! Alison, I've tried to pick this up on the side, but my curiousity is outweighing my risk of embarrassment: What does "slainte" mean? Later, Sheye |
