Subject: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,woodsie Date: 19 Mar 08 - 05:13 AM At last we have found a good pub to establish a folk club! Real ale, friendly regulars, chav-free, spacious performing area and music loving landlord! Blackheath Folk Club please come along and support this venture. The first night will be Tuesday 8th April 2008 and hopefully every Tuesday after that! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: the button Date: 19 Mar 08 - 05:31 AM Chav-free, eh? I'd come along, but I'm afraid my paternal grandmother was a gypsy. Sorry. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,woodsie Date: 19 Mar 08 - 07:15 AM What's that got to do with it? You are obviously out of touch with modern slang "Chav" although originating in romany is nowadays a term that generally describes the lager swilling herberts that walk around in hoodies and baseball caps causing trouble and mayhem. This pub is one of the few in the area that does not attract them. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: NormanD Date: 19 Mar 08 - 08:36 AM Chav-free, eh? That means no working-class then. I used to live in Blackheath and then very gladly moved to downtown Catford. My local boozer, The Blythe Hill Tavern, has a good Irish session night every Thursday (chavs in one bar, Irish playing chavs in the other). Good luck with the club! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: the button Date: 19 Mar 08 - 08:46 AM I would have thought that braying middle-class dickheads in rugby shirts with the collars turned up would have been more of a problem in Blackheath, to be honest. (Lewisham resident & proud). |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,woodsie Date: 19 Mar 08 - 08:58 AM Proud of what? |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Waddon Pete Date: 19 Mar 08 - 09:15 AM Lewisham has a lot to be proud of! Best wishes, Peter |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,Essex Girl Date: 19 Mar 08 - 09:26 AM The British Oak is not really Blackheath is it Mick. Will this be run as a folk club or just as a session? Sounds interesting anyway. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Richard Bridge Date: 19 Mar 08 - 11:24 AM Nothing wrong with working class. My father started as an apprentice in electrical signalling with GEC, and my maternal grandfather was a carpenter (no, not that carpenter, I'm not that old). Plenty wrong with what are universally referred to as "chavs" these days. I live not far from Chatham, so I do have plenty of chance to see the specie in its natural habitat. I'm no expert on traveller culture, but where I might once have expected to hear the greeting or salutation "chavvy", derived from the Romany, I think it is now more common to hear "Bruv" to indicate a degree of consanguinity. Also, actually, nothing wrong with being properly spoken. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,The Mole Catcher's unplugged Apprentice Date: 19 Mar 08 - 11:51 AM The accepted etymology for "chav" is that it derives from the Romani word "chavi", meaning a child......... the sad part is, I had to plough through so much so-called "uptodate" slang definitions of chav to find this...another piece of someone else's culture co-opted. Charlotte (the view from Ma and Pa's piano stool) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: matt milton Date: 19 Mar 08 - 11:53 AM i've always felt uncomfortable with the chav word too. just seems like more unnecessary put-downs of people without much money. but best o luck with the club. always good to hear of more good music happening in sarf landan. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Mick Woods Date: 19 Mar 08 - 12:12 PM The only problem we've had "button" has not been from the imaginary hordes of middle classes, but the uninformed snide comments from you, before our club has even started! By the way I am a non-rugby playing Irish citizen, a postman and I live in a council flat! Does that make me acceptable? |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,The Mole Catcher's unplugged Apprentice Date: 19 Mar 08 - 12:25 PM Nice to see a music venue opening, rather than hearing of music venues closing(far too many of those)Good luck all round, have one (or even several *LOL* for me, and who knows one day I might make it to your club :-) Charlotte (the view from Ma and Pa's piano stool) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: melodeonboy Date: 19 Mar 08 - 01:12 PM Sorry to keep the thread off topic, but the lingistic issue is of some interest. I'm certainly not of or from Chatham, but I did go to secondary school there. In the sixties and seventies, the use of "chavvy" for man/lad and "malt" (phonetically "mawt") for girl was widespread. I stopped using them when I went to university as nobody there understood them. As far as I remember, the word "chavvy" was fairly neutral. The negative connotation of the word, and the shortening to "chav", appears to have arisen, relatively recently, due to the less than desirable behaviour of certain groups of yobboes who wish to be known as chavs! And, more importantly, well done for finding the venue, Woodsie! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,John Hills Date: 19 Mar 08 - 01:21 PM As someone who was raised in Charlton(not Charlton Heights or West Charlton, what nonsense) as well as Charing Heath as a child it is my hope that the club prospers and the good works of those running it make it a successful enterprise. Regarding the title it really should be New Folk Club In Charlton. To suggest it is in Blackheath does give a misleading impression. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Richard Bridge Date: 19 Mar 08 - 01:43 PM For the opening night it looks like we need "Old man Mick's a postman He wears a postman's hat The 60s were his decade And he lives in a council flat".. Pray continue, good catters... |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,The Mole Catcher's music hall Apprentice Date: 19 Mar 08 - 01:54 PM 'Pray continue, good catters...' I say, I say, I say...my dustbin's full of toadstools...how do you know it's full?.....there's not mushroom inside!!! Charlotte (forgets how the line about looking a proper 'nana goes ;-)) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,woodsie Date: 19 Mar 08 - 02:07 PM charlton? se3 is blackheath! Not far from the border but still blackheath. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,The Mole Catcher's unplugged Apprentice) Date: 19 Mar 08 - 02:38 PM The British Oak 109 Old Dover Road Blackheath London SE3 8SU this seems to be the consensus on the web, so....... Charlotte (enquiries made) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,John Hills Date: 19 Mar 08 - 03:18 PM Yes, I agree. It is in Blackheath. What confused me was page 2 of location quoting Charlton. All is clear. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: The Mole Catcher's Apprentice (inactive) Date: 19 Mar 08 - 03:22 PM John, it appears that the Old Dover Road crosses over a couple of areas.. Charlotte(map reading R Us) |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,The Mole Catcher's unplugged Apprentice Date: 19 Mar 08 - 05:44 PM "yobboes who wish to be known as chavs!" I do prefer yobbo..it does describe that sort perfectly Charlotte (the view from Ma and Pa's piano stool) |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,woodsie Date: 13 Apr 08 - 06:19 PM Dave Bt ryant was my mate. What's all the hangup about location? Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Ruth Archer Date: 14 Apr 08 - 07:57 AM I want to know if Mick wears gorblimey trousers or Jaysusandbegorrah trousers... :D I hate the word Chav, both because of its etymology and because it seems like another stick with which to beat the working classes. Yes, there are yobs and louts in every town, but when kids at public schools are having Chav Parties, it's not really very nice. This was a good article: Bottom of the class In any case, the term Chav seems to be a bit passe now, which is a good thing IMHO. Good luck with the new folk club - that's the second one I've heard avbout this week, the first being in East Dulwich. Well done to all those flying the flag. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Patart Date: 15 Apr 08 - 08:08 AM We're far enough away to not cause confusion but the Blackheath Folk has celebrated its 15th birthday this year at Blackheath on the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Australia. We meet on the first Thursday of the month, with floor spots [a few poets perhaps] and a featured performer. If you're ever in our area please come along. Patrick |

Still might get there one day All the best Jo-Jo |
