The final events are being put in ink tonight. They will include a tribute to Kieth Marsden, something to do with "silver" as this is our 25th. 3 x meet the artist,we have a pretty full prog. + workshops, concert, ceilidh, & off course plenty of singarounds & music sessions, + morris & belly dancing, but we'll take a look & see if time & space will allow. Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Hesk Date: 03 Aug 11 - 04:36 PM This is a small friendly festival with a nominal charge of £25. Nevertheless a few people make a day visit to the pubs on Saturday and lunchtime Sunday for free, as for any pub. There are small charges for day visits to the various events. I would really recommend the complete weekend, however, but bear in mind, this is a small festival in a small village, but none the worse for that. |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Hesk Date: 03 Aug 11 - 04:54 PM Sorry:-In reference to the above, it was a smallish village, it is now a large one. There is plenty of walking involved! |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 03 Aug 11 - 05:27 PM There is plenty of walking involved! ??????????????? The longest walk is 6 mins. & we do provide transport in both directions for those who need a lift. Skipy. |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Hesk Date: 03 Aug 11 - 05:38 PM Dave, It wasn't an attack on Grove, just an explanation that the village has grown over the years. I realise that a healthy man, such as yourself, wouldn't regard it as walking! In my defence, the 5-6min walk is repeated 6 times or more, over the weekend, but I am very happy to walk it without a lift. Howard. |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: My guru always said Date: 04 Aug 11 - 04:43 AM Richard Bridge: We definitely recommend the weekend ticket! So looking forward to it having missed a couple of years! Hils |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: G-Force Date: 04 Aug 11 - 12:03 PM Lovely festival - but you'd need to be a bit of an athlete to walk from the campsite to the village hall in 6 minutes. |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 04 Aug 11 - 03:13 PM O/k, I DO walk very fast, I used to do 50 miles in under 11 hours, can't do that anymore I must admit! Skipy |

Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Hesk Date: 09 Aug 11 - 04:42 PM skipy Your comments about walking reminds me of the second "Stanford in the Vale", or, possibly, third, when I was stewarding. In those days there was an official walk in the magnificent Vale of White Horse. I found myself, map in hand, leading said walk. The only trouble was I did not know the area at all! Nevertheless we managed it without mishap. I seem to remember that you had great confidence in me, or to put it another way, said, "Get on with it, there is no-one else!" Happy days! |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Hovering Bob Date: 09 Aug 11 - 05:08 PM Am I missing something? Localbutwontgo said "Cliquey bunch - won't be going!" What festival are you talking about and why put it in this thread!!! 'White Horse' and its predecessor 'Stamford in the Vale' are/were the friendliest small festivals going. We'll be there, as usual. Getting excited. (Still feel that I've been had but then - t'was ever so!) Bob H. |

Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 10 Aug 11 - 08:13 PM I bought a 4 string tenor guitar over 18 months ago, it is still hanging up on a wall here as Im do not have a clue how to tune it! Help, if you are going to WHFF & tune one, please show me! Skipy |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: GUEST,Fyldeplayer Date: 11 Aug 11 - 03:57 AM Hi Skipy The normal CGDA tuning is very "open" and it gives the instrument unusual voicings from both open and closed chords. The fifths tuning also makes for easy moveable chord shapes. The instrument is equally well suited to both rhythm and lead playing. Hope that helps. Plenty of string players around at W/E to assist. Perhaps nude morris dancing as forfeit, nah that would be silly! |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: My guru always said Date: 11 Aug 11 - 04:18 AM Can't have anything silly going on at Grove, can we? |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Cats Date: 11 Aug 11 - 11:56 AM Grove is a respectable festival for respectable people! Van packed... |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: JennyO Date: 11 Aug 11 - 12:25 PM This reminds me of a comment made by the owner of the B&B we stayed at for Sidmouth - it was a manor house well out of Sidmouth (it was all we could get by the time we booked). We got the distinct impression that he wasn't very happy having festival goers staying there. He knew it was what we were there for, but that didn't stop him doing a spiel about how genteel Sidmouth is and how he thought it was spoilt by those ruffians who insisted on having a folk festival there. He also expected us to pay up front when we arrived, and when we asked if it would be possible to get a key in case we came back late, he said "Absolutely not. This is a 2 million pound manor house. I don't give out keys." We had to get back soon after midnight each night, otherwise we would have been locked out. One day when we went down for breakfast at 8am because Rob had a 9am workshop, he looked very put out and said he wasn't ready yet. Needless to say, we'll plan ahead a bit earlier and go somewhere else next year, where we won't be regarded with such suspicion and distain. He can give our room to someone more 'genteel' ;) |
