Subject: beer commercials/songs From: moongoddess Date: 20 Jul 05 - 12:39 PM I was watching a Red Sox game the other night and remembered back to the 60's when Narragansett Beer was the official beer of the Red Sox. Curt Gowdy would start each game with HI neighbor......, and the crowd would shout back, "have a Gansett". There was a song that went: "Hi neighbor, have a Gansett. It always keeps its golden promise. Each glass is as refreshing as the first. It's quite a beer, that Gansett beer. Hi neighbor, have ANOTHER Gansett, "Cause it's the beer brewed just right for drinking. The brewery, located in RI, closed in 1981 and so went the 20 year relationship between Narragansett beer and the Red Sox. As we say in RI, "And there it was, gone." |

Subject: RE: beer commercials From: Bat Goddess Date: 20 Jul 05 - 07:20 PM "My" beer is Leinenkugel, fortunately saved from oblivion but not ruined by an infusion of Miller money. Alas, I am Leinenkugel-less, since I haven't been able to spend a couple weeks with my mother in Milwaukee for the past two years and bring home "provisions" (cheese curds, candy raisins, Usinger's summer sausage, and Leinenkugel). The beer jingle, though, that permeates my beer swigging being, is Hamm's -- From the land of sky blue waters (waters) Comes the beer refreshing Hamm's the beer refreshing. And those wonderful bear and miscellaneous woodland wildlife on the commercials, lamps, signs, etcet etcet. Anybody remember a beer jingle for a Blatz product in the fifties -- Tempo? Tempo, Tempo, T-E-M-P-O Tempooooooo beer. Linn |

Subject: RE: beer commercials From: Severn Date: 20 Jul 05 - 08:40 PM I am the proud owner of a Dr. Seuss illustrated "Gangway For Gansett!" beer tray with an Indian Chief on some sort of a prototype skateboard rolling downhill past a cat while holding a tray with a cold frosty mug and a bottle on it in one hand. He used to illustrate their ads before he became huge in children's book sales and no longer needed that sort of revenue. It might explain, however, how he saw all that stuff on Mulberry Street, though, and how hegot himself "On Beyond Zebra" on occaision. If he'd stuck with it,in later years, maybe Horton would have heard the Who on a brewery sponsored 10th annual farewell tour. (Come to think of it, Opera perfected those multiple farewell tours long before Rock, so that when Townshend co-opted Opera, it probably came with the territory......but I digress). I used to drink Naragansett Porter out of longnecks when I'd go up to Maine. They were only American brewery I knew of back in those pre- MicroBrew days (and nights) that bottled the stuff, which I'd only known about from all those Irish drinking songs. Severn "The Beer Brewed Just Right For Drinking", eh?--As opposed to being for cooking crabs or pouring on garden slugs I guess. (That would have been "Glorious" Piels, or Hals or Iron City, I suppose). |
Subject: RE: beer commercials From: GUEST,Jim Date: 20 Jul 05 - 10:45 PM "Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're having more than ONE!" Also from Red Sox games I think. I do remember Curt fondly, but he was no Ned Martin. |
Subject: RE: beer commercials From: Mark Cohen Date: 20 Jul 05 - 11:54 PM At Phillies games it was, Hey, get your cold beer Get your ice cold Ballantine beer It's the beer that's crisp and icily light Cold clear taste that's precisely right Frosty, lively, crystally clear The crisp refresher Ballantine, Ballantine beer Seems like they were trying to tell you that Ballantine tasted just like a nice tall glass of ice water! (Which probably wasn't all that far from the truth.) Jim, I'm sure you remember the one about the guy who found out his wife was having twins, so he ran out and got her a case of Schaefer. Subject: RE: beer commercials From: PoppaGator Date: 22 Jul 05 - 02:35 PM A classic number in the New Orleans brass-band repertoire is "When We Danced at the Mardi Gras." When it's played by a brass band, of course, it's an instrumental and you don't hear the lyrics aned hence don't hear the title. A given tune can become fairly familiar even to a person who never learns its title. When I first came to New Orleans, I'd hear the beginning of this song and think they were playing "My beer is Rheingold the dry beer." The first line or two of the two tunes are virtually identical, but the tunes become significantly different for the rest of the verse. It was about 15-20 years before I fnally learned the true title (and heard the lyrics) of this song that I always associated with the big Rheingol sign above the center field clubhouse at the Polo Grounds. |
Subject: RE: beer commercials From: Nigel Parsons Date: 22 Jul 05 - 02:38 PM One of two UK TV ads for Whitbread Best Bitter circa 1982 tune Abdul the Bulbul Emir Now stories are told of a brave man of old Whose interest was Whitbread best beer But he new a klutz who drove him nearly nuts That was Abdul the Bulbul Amir Now that snake in the grass was a pain in the neck Claiming Whitbread tastes best from the jar, And this man most irate, with his own glass quite straight Was Count Ivan Skavinsky Skavar. Well those boastful old goats went out canvassing votes But one thing they both did forget, Be it straight glass or jar, Whitbread's not particular, 'Cos the best "Best" needs no etiquette. One beautiful beer! (C. Schmidt and Sons, Philadelphia, Norristown, and Cleveland) Or, as we kids used to say: Schmidt's of Philadelphia...the beer that made Milwaukee famous. Subject: RE: beer commercials From: Nigel Parsons Date: 23 Jul 05 - 10:01 AM Drink 'Red Barrel' near or far In pub or club or any bar It's always good wherever you are, Drink Watney's keg Red Barrel (Tune is vaguely the chorus from 'Come Landlord Fill The Flowing Bowel') The original advertising jingle extolling the 'virtues' of keg beer. It is presurised, homogenised, fined, and served under pressure. It is designed to be capable of being transported great distances with no notable change in the taste (worse luck) Nigel |
Subject: RE: beer commercials From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 23 Jul 05 - 10:20 AM You missed the first 2 lines. What's the beer we all love best? Watneys draught Red barrel, The special beer that beats the rest, Watneys Draught red Barrel. And the tune was Come Landlord... |
Subject: RE: beer commercials From: Nigel Parsons Date: 24 Jul 05 - 03:50 PM Keith I knew there should be a verse, but I couldn't recall it as it was the chorus which was frequently parodied. Did the verse really say 'draught'? or should that read 'Keg' the same as in the chorus? Nigel |

Subject: RE: beer commercials From: RangerSteve Date: 26 Jul 05 - 11:15 AM Hey, get your cold beer, Hey, get your Ballantine Beer, Hey, get your ice cold beer, Get your ice cold Ballantine Beer. I see from the above mentioned list that F.X. Matt no longer makes Utica Club. I misspent a lot of my college days at the Utica Club brewery in their replica 1890's bar drinking that crap and pumping quarters into the antique music machines. The beer they served was somehow far better than the stuff that made it into the cans and bottles. They also gave us Billy Beer, made in honor of Pres. Carter's late brother, which is probably one of the reasons they went under. A friend of mine once told me that the New Lost City Ramblers did the music for a Stroh's Beer TV ad. Does anyone know if there's any truth to that rumor? |
