what a wonderful bunch of people there are out there.... and quite a few twisted ones too!!!!

I loved all the suggestions especially Wild Irish Wallabies, and Crocodile Dundalk, (unfortunately the fellas didn't think the Aussies would get this....), I liked Double-cross too....

BUT THE WINNER..... (for the time being ... unless we get a better one so this is not an official end to this thread.. feel free to keep the suggestions coming).....IS........ (we need a fanfare or a drum roll here)............. Celtic Dreamtime(thanks Bo).

I've never laid eyes on a wombat, but understand it to be an Australian critter, a kind of marsupial. I think they are small harmless beasts that scurry about in the night, although for all I know there are wombats that grow as big as grizzly bears. The only marsupials we get around here are possums, a public nuisance that have been making their wicked way up from the US and sneaking into the few warm spots we have in the country.

The coolest critter in Australia has to be the flying fox.

Hi,

You're right a wombat is a marsupial. They crawl along on all fours and grow to about the size of a coffee table. They have wiry hair and long claws which they use to burrow. They are quite cute and seem to spend most of the time asleep because it's too hot to do anything else, (an Aussie will probably correct me and tell me that they're nocturnal.... I'm not sure.) The clever thing is though... they have pouches like a kangaroo, but the pouch faces towards their back legs, so that when they are digging the pouch doesn't get full of dirt!!! Clever eh??!!

The sad thing about wombats is that I have only ever seen one live one in the wild, but I've seen way too many dead ones on the sides of the roads. They are slow walkers, minding their own business, living quiet lives, and are therefore too slow to get out of the way of speeding cars.

I ran across a page on wombats once that claims that wombats also love chocolate biscuits (cookies-- for those in the US)...and it says that a wombat can run VERY fast for short distances and suggests not getting between a wombat and its chocolate biscuit!

Late joining, I've been traipsing out-of-country for the past month.

I haven't had a TV for several months now and folks have asked me if I miss it. Are you kidding?? 52 channels with nothing on them - do miss the Olympics, though. And, my hunger for intelligent dialog and humour whilst staring at a monitor is quelled by you folks. (Never begin a sentence with a preposition, or is that propositition, leprechaun??)

Speaking of double meanings, Australia has a teacher exchange program with Canada. One tale that came back to my Division was that of a young Canadian teacher that was at a high school rally and suggested to her students that they go out in full force and "root for the boys"!

Alison, I've tried to pick this up on the side, but my curiousity is outweighing my risk of embarrassment: What does "slainte" mean?
