If you're serious I would go with "Celtic Dreamtime" or Eirin's Walkabout

Crockodile DunCow Didgeri Dublin Spuds & Mutton Shorn & Shilaliegh

or

Aussi Eirin Jive from which you could all claim an initial.

Bo

Cheers.

Hi

what a wonderful bunch of people there are out there.... and quite a few twisted ones too!!!!

I loved all the suggestions especially Wild Irish Wallabies, and Crocodile Dundalk, (unfortunately the fellas didn't think the Aussies would get this....), I liked Double-cross too....

BUT THE WINNER..... (for the time being ... unless we get a better one so this is not an official end to this thread.. feel free to keep the suggestions coming).....IS........ (we need a fanfare or a drum roll here)............. Celtic Dreamtime(thanks Bo).

Thanks again for all your effort, it's been great fun.

I've never laid eyes on a wombat, but understand it to be an Australian critter, a kind of marsupial. I think they are small harmless beasts that scurry about in the night, although for all I know there are wombats that grow as big as grizzly bears. The only marsupials we get around here are possums, a public nuisance that have been making their wicked way up from the US and sneaking into the few warm spots we have in the country.

The coolest critter in Australia has to be the flying fox.

Hi,

You're right a wombat is a marsupial. They crawl along on all fours and grow to about the size of a coffee table. They have wiry hair and long claws which they use to burrow. They are quite cute and seem to spend most of the time asleep because it's too hot to do anything else, (an Aussie will probably correct me and tell me that they're nocturnal.... I'm not sure.) The clever thing is though... they have pouches like a kangaroo, but the pouch faces towards their back legs, so that when they are digging the pouch doesn't get full of dirt!!! Clever eh??!!

The sad thing about wombats is that I have only ever seen one live one in the wild, but I've seen way too many dead ones on the sides of the roads. They are slow walkers, minding their own business, living quiet lives, and are therefore too slow to get out of the way of speeding cars.

Bruce O. A kangaroos foot on a bodhran? Alan should write a song about it. I've gotta remember "Gaelic breath". I also like Tie me Leprechaun down. Leprechaun, what's your gender? Maybe we can work out an arrangement.

I love the way Mudcat threads can take off in unforeseen directions.

What do roots have to do with travel(l)ing salespersons? Oh, wait, I think I've got it.

I heard that joke about a giant panda. It dines in a restaurant, and when the waiter brings the bill, the panda draws a gun, shoots him, and walks out. The manager catches up to the panda in the street. "You can't do that!"

The panda takes out a dictionary and shows the manager the entry. "Panda (n). A bearlike mammal native to western China. Eats shoots and leaves."

I ran across a page on wombats once that claims that wombats also love chocolate biscuits (cookies-- for those in the US)...and it says that a wombat can run VERY fast for short distances and suggests not getting between a wombat and its chocolate biscuit!

a wombat

a wombat running directly at the camera

hi,

Thanks for the offer Leprechaun..... By the way you never did tell me what part of the world you are from... I'm assuming that Ireland is too obvious an answer.

It never fails to amaze me how these threads digress, there I am asking for names of bands and we end up with discussions on wildlife and offers of bondage!! Mudcat is brill!!!!!!!!

Oh and in case you haven't already guessed "root" has a completely different meaning here in Oz.

Okay, since we're supposed to be namin' an Irish band, here's another... "Riordan" Apparently, this is a Celtic word that means "Royal Bard"

The Wild Islanders or some kind of geographical spin on it

hi Fenian,

We did think of some names ourselves but we thought it'd be fun to ask for other ideas, and from the amount of replies we've got I reckon the others thought it was fun too.

...and if someone asks me where we got our name... just think of the plug we can do for Mudcat.

Late joining, I've been traipsing out-of-country for the past month.

I haven't had a TV for several months now and folks have asked me if I miss it. Are you kidding?? 52 channels with nothing on them - do miss the Olympics, though. And, my hunger for intelligent dialog and humour whilst staring at a monitor is quelled by you folks. (Never begin a sentence with a preposition, or is that propositition, leprechaun??)

Must babble, been away too long.

Way, to go Alison - excellent thread!! I liked Shamorck and Shears and The Bard in the Bush. Is the double entendre of that second one universal??

Speaking of double meanings, Australia has a teacher exchange program with Canada. One tale that came back to my Division was that of a young Canadian teacher that was at a high school rally and suggested to her students that they go out in full force and "root for the boys"!

Alison, I've tried to pick this up on the side, but my curiousity is outweighing my risk of embarrassment: What does "slainte" mean?

Later, Sheye

Hi Alison,

I'd be tickled if you go with 'Celtic Dreamtime'. If you do, you can add to you influences a, Biafran born, Dutch Canadian lending two words to an Aussie Irish Band. : )

I really like the conflagration of countries, the borrowing of backgrounds, the knitting together of nationalities the.... (you get the idea.)

Are ye parading them as Aussies to keep them out of Howard's clutches & concentration camps ???
If so, it'd have to be 'Sheila & The Auld Orange Bandicoots'
If they're real Aussies, 'Sheila & the Marsupials'...
