Maybe it's just cause I'm sitting down to eat my lunch... Maybe it's that I'm such an opportunivore that my list of foods I don't like is in the single digits... Maybe it's just to 'chat'...

But whatta ya like? Currently, a little paper-thin-sliced roast beef... on a cheesy-white bread... with lettuce, tomato, mustard and Franks Chili-lime 'hot' sauce (I say 'hot' cause it's NOT at all...)

Oh... and a pickle... gotsta haves m' pickle!

Cheesy white bread as in "mostly air and no flavour" or white bread with cheese in the dough?

My favorite sandwich is usually the one I'm eating - with the exception of my home town, which is, of course, my very favorite Sandwich.

"Cannibal Sandwich" runs a close "nearly a favorite" though.

Whole-grain bread, raw mince, thick sliced onion, and horseradish.

Roast chicken, fresh red peppers, tomato, lettuce, and pesto sauce on a whole wheat bun. (dark rye or pumpernickle is good too).

And a nice cold ice tea to wash it down.

Turkey, whole wheat bread (usually my home-made), lettuce, tomato and mayo. Finest kind.

For breakfast...
Toasted white-bread with refried mashed taters leftover from the night before... with cheese...

After 8 or 10 pints of Guinness... chips (which is to say french fries)... a good chip-butty... and HP sauce...

Mmmmm...

(Hard to believe one can read a thread that makes one hungry WHILE one is eating!)

The old standards, the BLT and the Club Sandwich work for me too.

In the fall and winter, I likes a hot turkey and fries soaked in gravy for lunch, butter-covered veggies on the side. Feel those arteries cloggin', yeah!

where does "butty" come from? Sounds like it is slang for butter.

When you say bacon, what type are you referring to? That sounds good.

Whole-grain bread, raw mince, thick sliced onion, and horseradish.

I read this first as "raw mice....

Peanutbutter-and-jelly on really good bread. Has to be outstanding jelly, too -- not just Concord grape or processed strawberry.

Around here you can get a turkey breast sandwich made with cream cheese, lettuce and cranberry sauce. Put it on a good whole-grain, multi-grain bread.

"Why can't you starve at the beach?"
"Because of the sandwiches there."

Hyuk, hyuk.

As a Yorkie, a sandwich has always been a buttie to me - even tho' I'm now ensconced in the deep south. They don't do chip butties in any of the chippies around here though - have to buy the chips and put them in butties at home. Confusingly, a bit further north from GOC - in the Newcastle area - a buttie is a friend!! Second only to a chip buttie is a Marmite buttie!!

Never had a "chip butty", doesn't really sound like comfort food to me!    Fries with gravy, or malt vinegar or even gravy.   Cheese fries aren't bad.   With a thick shake. Clogs your arteries but it is worth the pain!

Do burgers count?

I'm not a big fan of them, but the State Sandwich of New Jersey is pork roll with egg and cheese on a hard roll.   New Jersey is the home of pork roll.

... let me clarify... the pork roll is on a Kaiser roll, which most of us in the Garden State refer to as a hard roll.

Malt vinegar is puss from the boil on Hitlers dogs butt!
:-P
Heh

Honestly, the stuff makes me gag so badly that I've had to take breaks playing in pubs, after someone in the room with me has ordered fish and chips, and then poisoned them with malt vinegar... I have to clear out till the stank is gone... or have someone light up a big stanky cigar to block it out...

"Like this guy..."
Someone needs to tell Bubbles we found his father!

"do (hot)dogs"
apply mustard and relish to inside of bun... top with hot pickles and kraut... drop straight down neck hole!
Mmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!

"I have to clear out till the stank is gone"

I have a friend who has the same reaction to mustard. Another friend can't stand pickles and will send back his sandwich if they put a pickle on the plate. I think these reactions can be traced to bad toilet training or sitting to close to the television as a child!

Not necessarily my all-time favorite (it varies), but certainly toward the top of the list.

Blasphemy sandwich (this is what I started calling it when I took one to work and a Jewish friend said "God's gonna get you for that!").

Split a bagel, lather the bottom half with Dijon mustard, lay a nice, thick slice of ham on that, add a thick slice of Walla Walla sweet onion (about the same diameter as the bagel) on top of the slice of ham, put a small skiff of mayo on the top half of the bagel, and assemble. Accessory:   Big kosher dill pickle.

Sometimes I took two of them to work.

See ya a bit later. It's lunchtime here.

Don Firth

Potato sandwiches sound like a weird selection only to those who haven't had a good one. I've only recently learned about the British delicacy the "chip butty," but years ago, when I first arrived in New Orleans, I encountered the Fried Potato Po-Boy: freshly fried, crisp French Fries on a loaf of French bread, soaked in roast-beef gravy (preferably thick with shredded beef "debris") and dressed with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. Pretty much duplicates the taste and texture of a classic New Orleans roast beef po-boy for less than half the price. In fact, some folks believe that this potato sandwich was the origin of the now-universal term "po-boy," because of its extreme affordability.

In the fairly-recent Hollywood comedy "Spanglish," Adam Sandler plays a chef and, at one point, makes himself a great sandwich as a late-night snack. On the DVD, among the "extras" or "bonus materials," there's a segment in which an actual Los Angeles chef, who was called in as a consultant to suggest a recipe for the "world's best sandwich," demonstrates how to make it. It's basically a BLT plus a fried egg and melted cheese; my wife couldn't resist the challenge and made us each a sandwich according to the instructions. I don't know if it's the world's very best sammich, but it's pretty dern good:

Two thick slices of some kind of coarse "country" bread: toast em, spread one slice with mayo and melt Monterrey Jack cheese on the other.

On the slice of bread spread with mayonnaise, start stacking:
~ bacon, 3 slices (American-style bacon, that is);
~ lettuce and tomato
~ then the egg, fried over easy, with the yolk unbroken and ideally still runny
~ top it off with the melted-cheese-coated slice of bread, cheesy side down of course.

Yum!

PS: Another Hollywood movie quote of note, from some Mafia comedy ("Analyze This," maybe?) ~ "What kinda sammich ain't so fattening?" "A half-a sammich!"
