It'll be luvverly to see you and Chris there as always! It just wouldn't be the same! We've got the programmes at our house - all 1000 of them, though we've sold quite a lot already. Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST,DMcF Date: 08 Jul 04 - 05:17 AM Hi Ali - nae probs as regards the clicky! My pleasure me deario. No need for a resend of schedule - a large scale scouring of the music room/office at home unearthed the one you sent earlier - and a kind 'catter' emailed me a copy they'd been sent - my cup runneth over! As for the weather - what difference will it make once you've downed that bottle's contents? I'll bring a spare as a back-up eh? Meantime - we're doing the sun-dance for you even now - I'd like to sit in that wee park, eating my sandwiches, a-listening to them thar Shellbacks again - in the sun this time! - hugs - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 08 Jul 04 - 06:27 AM Dunc ....... will you be able to spare to time to show me "Can't go there" I feel a certain affinity with the lyrics and would like, if you don't mind, to add it to my reportoire Cheers Raggy |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST,DMcF Date: 08 Jul 04 - 07:25 AM Nae probs Tash - I'll teach you it at Saddleworth. Be glad to. How'd ya like the 'Woodshed Boys' CD by the way? (And have you heard it playing in the background on 'Emmerdale'?!!!Naw! Don't suppose y'have - I don't watch it either - but a fan of ours from Wigan phoned us up all excited about it) By the by, you can also do the 'official photographer' bit for the band if you've the inclination - your work had been first class afore! (Other folk might want to engage your talents on that score!) We've a 30min spot in the main hall on the Sat evening (first on?) - which will be some achievement! (getting a six-piece folk-rock band on and off in time!) There'll be a good concert on the Sat aft I reckon - upstairs in a big room of a pub on the main drag. A few artists on (in line) one song at a time each, each song to 'link' to the one just heard. Did that there last year - a scream! Copper Kettle to host, I think - but with Stanley Accrington in the line up (he was there with me last year) things will be roarin' good fun I'm sure! Think I'll bring a 'prize' and get the audience to decide who's link was the best/most tenuous - congrats in advance Stan! - Hugs - Duncan (who really should be knuckling down to work here!) |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 08 Jul 04 - 07:32 AM The CD is at present ensounced in the CD player in the car, one of only two, you and Runrig .......... I reckon that's good company you're keeping |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: VIN Date: 08 Jul 04 - 07:39 AM Was sad to read of the death of Bill Tooley. Din'nt know bill personally but, like many i'm sure, spoke to him a coupl o times at past S/worths either in the bar on on the 'site'. Nice friendly guy. Condolencies to Theresa and family (& firm friends!). |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: Mark Dowding Date: 08 Jul 04 - 07:46 AM Hopefully myself and Chris Harvey will see one or two of you at the tribute to Harry Boardman concert that we're doing at the Methodist church hall - "A Mon Like Harry". Loads of the songs and recitations that Harry used to do with a bit of chat about the old days. How did you get your fire going when there wasn't any draught??? What's the connection between "Bowton's Yard" and "Coronation Street"? (It isn't what you think!)Who was "Peabody" who had a never ending supply of money?, Why is 466 Oldham Road, Failsworth a significant address? Come along and find the answers. See you there Duncan - "Woodshed Boys" - Belting CD! Cheers Mark |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: Alio Date: 09 Jul 04 - 06:29 AM Yes, we'll really miss Bill at Saddleworth this year. The profits will definitely be down in the Tory Club - the one in Saddleworth was the only one he would drink in (he always said he was doing missionary work there!!) I agree with Duncan re. the Song Game on the Saturday - I deliberately put Stanley in there! Well, only 7 days to go....I feel a Jamiesons coming on already!! Ali |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: VIN Date: 09 Jul 04 - 08:23 AM And the sun's started to shine, fingers/toes/legs crossed! |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: Alio Date: 12 Jul 04 - 06:18 AM Yes, anyone who wants to leave instruments, CD's etc somewhere safe overnight can use the secure room behind the Festival Office in the Civic Hall (I look after my artists and festival goers!!!) Ali |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: Abuwood Date: 13 Jul 04 - 04:23 AM Can't wait to be at the best festival of the year. I have got my jungle formula and midge proof gazebo packed! Looking forward to doing 'Songs from the Hat' and the 'Sunday Sing' with Theresa. Steve is planning to be one of Bill's mission converts and prop the bar in the con club. He will need someone to put the world to rights with though - are there any volunteers? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST,padgett Date: 13 Jul 04 - 04:27 AM How did you get your [coal fire] going when there wasn't any draught brought back memories of living in a terrace property in Brinckman St. Barnsley in the early fifties. Coal fires were started with sticks, my job as a lad was to chop 'em in the cellar with an axe Old Newspapers were laid on the fire grate (once the old cinders had been removed to the bin)then sticks, then small coals. However getting the thing to go properly was a bit of a devil and ingenius yet unsafe practices included putting the shovel infront of the fire and then covering the rest of the fireplace front with newspaper to create a vacuum ~ this created a draught to get the fire going, provided you didn't get the front newspaper on fire first!! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: Alio Date: 13 Jul 04 - 08:30 AM I never knew you were that old, Ray!!! Looking forward to seeing you - only 3 days to go!!! Ali x |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST,padgett Date: 13 Jul 04 - 09:06 AM I'm not that old ~ just that we had some primitive conditions, fortunately the toilets weren't the old duckets The tin bath was also in the cellar, for the weekly bath, rest of the week I stood in the kitchen sink! EEh times were 'ard then Ali!! We then moved to the local council estate, I was 14 and at the grammar school See you at Saddleworth ps next door neighbour was a tall bloke and couldn't get into the toilet very well going forwards, so he cut a piece of wood out so that the door could be pushed and circumnavigated the toilet pot, if you know what I mean. It looked a bit weird from the outside All the best Ray P |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: Alio Date: 14 Jul 04 - 04:30 AM Thanks Ray - it's a poor day when you learn nowt, isn't it?!! Leaving the office now to get ready for the festival, so see you all on Friday!! Ali |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST Date: 14 Jul 04 - 04:42 AM I can assure you ray is that old!! And I wish I could make it to Saddleworth. They are alright it is a brilliant festival. Good Luck Grae |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST Date: 14 Jul 04 - 04:43 AM oops should have been all right |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST,padgett Date: 14 Jul 04 - 05:41 AM Cheers Ali and everyone, I look forward to see Mark Dowding and extolling the virtues of creating a draught to get that fire going!! Also hope to see Sid Calderbank, dialects permitting? I wonder what his method was! For the record I was born in 1947 and Booker in 1942, he's just had his birthday I haven't yet, Dave Burland has his birthday on Booker's, that is July 12th and he's a year older than Booker Thought you might be interested, but then!! See you at Saddleworth, Ray Padgett |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: Mark Dowding Date: 14 Jul 04 - 06:11 AM I don't think Sid's going to be there this year Ray. He's bike racing at Oulton Park this weekend he's told me. Your reaction to the mention of coal fires, etc is just what myself and Chris Harvey are wanting from the audience. It's surprising how much nostalgia can be generated from a line in a song. Please come and say hello on Saturday. Cheers Mark |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST,Lady Aelfleda Date: 14 Jul 04 - 03:05 PM I'll be there - getting drunk, falling over & dribbling over John Wright! The last time I fell over was at Holmfirth & I've still got pulled tendons in my shoulder - should I drink less?? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 14 Jul 04 - 04:18 PM Jude if you drink less you might fall down more!! See you there its our third aniversary - I'll bring a bottle of wine Ray I'm not that old and I still remember having to light the fire and using a newspaper over the shovel - still did that when I moved into my first flat in 1984 too - my flat mate would then pile the fire up high and leave me to swelter whilst he went to the pub - getting back at closing time the fire would then be just at the right level and you could party til the small hours then put the ashes on to keep the fire in til the morning if you were lucky so you didnt have the problem of getting it started! I remember toast infront of the fire too - the only thing my mother could cook that wasnt a burnt offering!! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST,padgett Date: 15 Jul 04 - 04:01 AM All very interesting stuff Red & White Rabbit! Her ladyship should try drinking halves as pint pots are clearly too heavy and her shoulder will never get right A lttle bit of exercise and shoulder manipulation will do you the world of good Pot washings good! No that's a very sexiest remark padgett! All in gest, see you at Saddleworth Ray P |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: VIN Date: 15 Jul 04 - 04:30 AM Aye, brings back childhood memories in Newton Heath, shovel in front of fire and panickin when the paper caught fire!, havin to rake the ashes out in the mornin; watchin dad spit in the fire and waiting for the sizzle (urgh); arguin as to who's turn it was to 'put coal on'; then when poorly you could have a fire in yer bedroom....and yes i stood up in sink (slopstone) as we had no bathroom (or hot water on tap) - dad went to the public baths at the end of the street next to the wash house where me mam went every week; and the outside bog...well that was somethin else 'specially in winter - goin through the yard with a candle on a piece of wood - then it would freeze and you could'nt pull the chain. Eeeee when i were a lad, the times they were bad But not quite as bad as when me dad were a lad......etc |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: Mark Dowding Date: 15 Jul 04 - 04:40 AM Standing up in t' sink???? Sheer luxury. I used to get hosed down in t' back yard and scrubbed wi t' stiff yard brush till I were bleeding once a fortnight and hung up to dry in a stiff breeze. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: MC Fat Date: 15 Jul 04 - 04:48 AM You were lucky we used to dream of being scrubbed down in't back yard we used to have to lie down on't road and let the road sweeper run us over. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: Mark Dowding Date: 15 Jul 04 - 05:45 AM Road sweeper??!!?? What would we have given to have had a roadsweeper!! We used to have to go out and suck our own bit of road clean wi us mouths and spit t' muck onto t' middin. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: GUEST,padgett Date: 15 Jul 04 - 05:47 AM Yea Vin, outside toilets, WC cistern would ice over and it wouldn't flush, had to break the ice ~ slopping out the guzunder or tripping across t'yard to t'toilet to do number twos in the dark with a lump of Daily Mirror, in case the strips on the 6 inch nail had all been used up O'course printed newspaper were a bit iffy as the print came off on your hands and - well! I have some old photos of conditions prior to 1936 - which of course were even worse, I'm doing trad song at Saddleworth and have some pictures of linen weavers cottage in Barnsley, might be of interest to those singing weaving/industrial song |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: VIN Date: 15 Jul 04 - 05:50 AM Road sweeper eh? Lucky you! We had to wait for heavy rain to clean the crap away from our street! Wish we'd had a yard brush Mark. Tooth brushes don't last that long |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: MC Fat Date: 15 Jul 04 - 06:10 AM Tooth brush you were lucky we had to use an old brillo pad to clean our teeth |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth Folk Festival - July 16-18th From: VIN Date: 15 Jul 04 - 06:56 AM Slated roof? Mouse trap? tuh...we encouraged mice in our 'ouse, twer t'only way we could get any protein.
