Dave-

The Sea Symposium certainly looks interesting. I'll certainly be attending.

I'm also wondering if there will be any kind of remembrance service for Johnny Collins and Barry Finn. There may have been other nautical main stays who have also passed over the bar in the past year but I can't think of them at the present time. I know we can (and will) do this one way or another but is it part of the official program?

Mystic Seaport's January Chantey Blast (fundraiser for the Sea Music Festival) was a memorial for Barry Finn. Members of his family attended. Songs were sung; tears were shed. It was wonderful--and packed. I wondered if it exceeded fire capacity for the venue.

Its a rainy Tuesday afternoon and I was just daydreaming about the Festival which is less than a month away. I am just happy that we have one but I was really thinking how nice it would be if it was one of those warm summery weekends where you lay in the grass and just relax and listen to the music. Whatever the weather, we will see you soon. Love- the twins

I'm happy to see that Stephen Winick will be giving a presentation on "The Leaving of Liverpool" Saturday morning. A reason not to stay up *too* late Friday night! A friend recently pointed out his very interesting article about that song in the Summer-Fall 2008 issue of Folklife Center News. If anyone is interested to read that article, you can find it online here:

Thank you, KathyW, for that link. I will bookmark it. I'm a member of Mystic Seaport but couldn't get to the festival until I retired. June is not good for teachers. Since retirement I have gone annually. I live about an hour from the Seaport, but this year for the first time I have booked a room nearby. I realized I cannot do the late-night pub sings and the morning symposiums if I commute from home. I look forward to this presentation.

It is probably too late for us to do anything, but we have our new tugboat CD out and it is really nice...it is just out and we raced to sell it at FOlklife and are just starting to market it elsewhere..so if anyone is in an official position or could mention it to the people who run the bookstore or the new tug exhibit that it is out and truly wonderful, that would be great. PM me for details. mg

For those who have never attended this Sea Music Festival before, here's my short summary. The location is the Mystic SeaPort Museum which has many traditional wooden ships tied up at the wharfs, and a full range of associated museum displays in work buildings and galleries. In the shipyard, there's an on-going major rebuild of the whaling bark Charles W. Morgan.

The Festival kicks off (sets sail?) with a Thursday evening concert, followed by a public shanty session at a dance hall across from the Museum. Friday during the day there are lectures and then an evening concert and another shanty session. Saturday there is a morning lecture and then a full slate of workshops and mini-concerts, major evening concert and another late night shanty session. Sunday there are more workshops and mini-concerts during the day, and then a wind-up final survivors concert in the late afternoon.

There are generally smaller music sessions going on in the late evening, some of them only accessible to Museum staff, performers, Festival volunteers and Festival donors. Ask around and you may be able to participate in one of these as well. The public shanty sessions usually end around midnight but the other informal sessions have been said to continue until the sun rises again; I wouldn't know, given that I generally bail out at 2 am.

Please feel free to add on or correct my ad hoc summary, or better still go to the Festival Website.

Judy and I will be there all weekend, as will be Norris Dale, another member of Roll & Go. Ask us about our new CD titled Look Out!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Charley your summary of the festival was really on target. I guess that the only thing that I would add is the amazing comaraderie of the people who enjoy this music. If you are new to the genre, there is a good chance you will fall in love quite eaisly. If you are a devotee of sea music but have never been to the festival you will think you have died and gone to heaven. It is authentic ,it is international, it is inspiring and it is just plain fun. Come join us, you are in for a treat! See you all this weekend. Twin 2

Since all the concerts are listed as being in "boat shed 15" I assume that is Lighthouse Point, as usual.

You are correct about that location, Susan. The Boat Shed is that wood frame canopy-covered structure near the lighthouse. The number 15 is its designation on the seaport map. Since it is dark when the concerts end, I hope I remember to carry my flashlight in a bag. The lighting along the pathways is too weak for me.

One of the less crowded but good restaurants to eat at before the concert is "Go Fish" which is on the back side of the Olde Mystick shopping mall across from Howard Johnson's after you get off I-95. We'll probably be there if we're on schedule.

Oh, yes, now where did I put the clipboard with the festival schedules?

But, remember, the best seat in the house is actually at Lighthouse Point, Mystic Seaport at 7 PM each evening.

Too much late night singing. I'll be catching up on sleep for the rest of the week.

Dave Coffin and his daughter were wonderful to watch last evening, just a magic set of songs and harmony.

Gibbs been doing some creative shantying.

And there's a pack of pirates from Brown University here as well.

Several songs paid tribute to Barry, including my rendition of "Yangtse River Shanty" last night at the Shanty Blast; there was a thunderstorm at the time which added some extra dynamics to the rendition:

Away, boys, away (CRASH AND FLASH)!
Blow me down that Yangtse River,
Away, boys, lift and walk away (FLASH, CRASH AND FLASH)!

"Maui" and "Leave Her Johnny" have been sung and the Festival is being packed away for another year as I post this. How ever do they store all those fine performers, not to mention their instruments?

No photos yet but we'll probably post some in a day or so.

It was really nice to meet some more Mudcatters at the Festival, match faces to names. And I think some of my photos have captured them at their best!

Other moments to treasure include The B. Whalers dedicating one of their songs to Barry Finn; The Johnson Girls also dedicated at least a couple of songs to Barry. He is well remembered.

Peter and Richard did really well, as expected, and I'm looking forward to listening to their new CD on the way home.

I understand the late late night song session Saturday at the Youth Training Building went on to at least 4 in the morning, but we'll have to get a survivor, if there were any, to give us a report. I bailed out at 2 am after the Shanty Shout at the dance hall closed down. I'll describe that in more detail after I return to Maine but it was a great session.

Now it's off to find something to eat and more to drink. Judy and I are staying another day rather than run the risk of not making it back to Maine in our somewhat compromised functional status.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, still resident in Mystic.

I'm home and still on a Sea Music High. The festival was wonderful. If you couldn't make it, I hope you will next year. If you were there, you already know how wonderful it was, and I hope you'll come back. I hope I do, too! I'm looking forward to seeing Charley's photos. It looks like he has some serious camera equipment. My next big festival will be New Bedford's Summerfest, July 2-4. It's a more generalized folk music festival, but I know some sea music will be included. It's very inexpensive. Often we can see fireworks during the Celtic Extravaganza which closes the festival.

Wonderful festival Geoff did a great job. We loved the B. whalers and Mustards Retreat.( there must be a song in there- Michael Hough) The rain was just a slight inconvenience because when you are there the music takes you away to many places in the mind and the heart. But most of all we love all you beautiful people whom we consider some of our dearest friends. Oh I dont want to forget the hymn sing thank you Deidre it was so lovely. I will forever hold onto the song "Take Me in Your Lifeboat" when I need a little boost on a tough day but festival memories help in that area too. Love and many kisses from The Heavenly Twins

It was my first time going this year after hanging out at the Griz for several, and I'm really happy I went. As I was in the car heading home last night I had the biggest grin on my face, and the high (as well as the new CDs I bought) got me through all day today, despite still being exhausted from staying up till 2 every night. Personal highlights for me include:

-vocally dueling singers from Nordet.
-Watching David Coffin and his daughter sing.
-Everyone joining in and harmonizing on Northwest Passage during the Stan Rogers tribute on Sunday.
-singing halyard shanties in the pouring rain while actually doing the work.
-leading a chanty for the first time in the session on Friday night.
-sitting in the final concert and realizing that I definitely need to do this more and become more a part of this community.

I played part of "The Edmond Fitzgerald" to my fourth grade class last period today.... One of the girls would like a CD. I hope she likes it enough to explore this genre more. :)

OT but can you give her and perhaps the rest of the class a special reward..certificate, extra recess or whatever..for learning that or another song from it...that is a very long song to be sure. But I hope she is encouraged to learn some of the songs. It never occurred to us to learn more than one verse of any song when we were younger, perhaps because no one ever even suggested it to us.

Someone said that her 4 year old had learned most of the songs on our tugboat CD which is so cute...mg

Gibb-

Your two videos above are just wonderful. I was caught be surprise when the Barrouallie Whalers dedicated the first song to Barry Finn, big lump in throat. I'll be sending them a copy of Barry's CD as thanks for remembering him.

We also had a fine time listening to three of our newly acquired CD's on the drive back to Maine:

With Shipmates All Around by Peter Kasin and Richard Adrianowicz
Salty Walt & the Rattlin' Ratlines by Walter Askew and gang
Outward Bound by Bob Walser

The fact that we were listening to just these three CD's for more than four hours indicates the quality of the performances as well as our avid interest. We were never bored!

Now to begin editing digital images, hoping that there are at least a dozen keepers from the hundreds that were shot over the weekend.

Nice to be back in Maine, all things considered.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble and JudyB

Gibb--- Thanks for the glimpse. I hope the Seaport will forebear from claiming copyright and demanding that they be pulled from YouTube!

Here is the "Maui" closer.

[As far as copyright, etc. goes, I seek permission when reasonable from the performers to post, although that is as a matter of courtesy since I don't think this requires permission. (?) However if the Seaport, B. Whalers, etc. requires it, they won't need to demand from YouTube; I will gladly and immediately remove in respect of people's wishes.]

Gibb-

Not to worry until someone from the Museum raises that point. They really are great (well as fine as one can do ad hoc) videos and a public service.

Feverishly editing underexposed images from the Friday Evening Shanty Shout.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Gibb, I hope those clips can remain on YouTube. I shared the Maui clip on Facebook. My folkie friends will love it, but the rest won't bother to view it. One of the many things that make the festival so wonderful for me is being with all of you who love it, too, and many of you know so much more about it that I'm learning new things.

Hi Janet,
I think you're in a few of those clips, too ;)

Here is a clip of Sir Don Sineti singing a ballad of "The Minnesota" during the "Shipwreck!" workshop. Incidentally, if anyone knows more about the song (I am not sure if there are more verses, for example), it would be interesting to know. It didn't turn up in any basic searches.

Mg,
Sadly, there's only two days left of school, so I doubt she'll be able to learn it that quickly! That said, I'm really hoping that she'll like it enough to seek out some more music in the folk genre. We'll see what happens.

Survivor's night was wonderful, btw. I wish we could have gone later than 11....

Heidi

If the Seaport kicks up a fuss, one might point out that the Chicago Maritime Festival puts up / allows to be posted a whole load of YouTube clips from their venue. I'm only mentioning it because, in my experience, MSM seems to rather jealously guard the rights and privileges pertaining to their venue.
