Subject: RE: BS: who are your favorite guitarists: part 2 From: kendall Date: 10 Jan 02 - 11:05 PM Add Dave Mallett to this list. I like what he does with a guitar. Also, Nikos Apollonio, the luthier, is no slouch on a guitar. For a man who plays both acoustic and electric, I'd have to say, Denny Breau. You may recall that his brother, Lenny, was a world famous jazz guitarist. Chet Atkins once said of Lenny, "He has forgotten more about the guitar than I ever knew." |

Subject: RE: BS: who are your favorite guitarists: part 2 From: GUEST,frankie Date: 11 Jan 02 - 06:05 AM John Miller. Now based in Seattle, I believe. Bobert, I'm a fan of tasteful, understated playing but I used to go around the D.C. clubs to hear Gatton play and in his case (and in Jimi Hendrix' case) I say when you've got it, flaunt it. Regards, frankie. |

Subject: RE: BS: who are your favorite guitarists: part 2 From: uncle bill Date: 11 Jan 02 - 11:11 PM raptor...that song by Chris Smither is "No Love Today" , often called 'the vegetable song'. He does indeed belong on that list also. |
Subject: RE: BS: who are your favorite guitarists: part 2 From: catspaw49 Date: 11 Jan 02 - 11:27 PM Well BOB....You might do well to buy one of Rick's CD's from Folk Legacy and see what you think. Now you might also want to listen to another 'Catter, Justa Picker. More like Justonehelluva' Picker......He was a student of Rick's and they play some together now. Jeri had a great time listening to them. Try "Mudcat Rag" or anything else for that matter on this page. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: who are your favorite guitarists: part 2 From: Midchuck Date: 12 Jan 02 - 08:35 AM Norman Blake: The ultimate American (White, Anglo) traditional guitarist - flatpicking, fingerpicking, maybe nose- for all I know. Chris Newman: Ilkley (sp?), Yorkshire. One of the top 50 or so American-style flatpickers for technical ability, probably in the top 20 for musicianship, and one of the two or three in that group who isn't American. And the only one I know who does O'Carolan and them as a regular thing. And cooks a great meal of chicken and noodles. Jack Lawrence: Doc Watson's sidekick of many years. Probably one of the most underrated guitarists around, because he's spent so much time in Doc's shadow. But Doc could have had any guitar player, almost, tour with him, and he chose Jack. Of course, now that he's sold off his Collings, his playing may have suffered a little... (Nyuck, nyuck). Andrew Hardin: Tom Russell's guitar player. Plays a "cardboard" acoustic-electric Takamine by his own choice, and does the most incredible things with it. Get The Long Way Around and listen to "The Angel of Lyon." Peter. |

Subject: RE: BS: who are your favorite guitarists: part 2 From: DonMeixner Date: 14 Jan 02 - 12:34 AM James Burton is still a favorite of mine along with Albert Lee. I really enjoyed Robbie Basho years back. I would have to add Kyle Gass from Tenacious D. He has such a fluid rhythymic style that I am envious. I could mention Doc and merle and Norman and Rick but so is everyone else. Don |

Subject: RE: BS: who are your favorite guitarists: part 2 From: GUEST,jbruyere Date: 14 Jan 02 - 09:00 AM Of the non-living for unique style of delivery: Django, Les Paul, Jerry Garcia. Of the living, I have too many favorites to listen to,(perhaps Carlos Santana) but for those that own a Martin, I must raise a toast to Doc Watson and Tony Rice. It is a blessing to give the world great music. |

Subject: RE: BS: who are your favorite guitarists: part 2 From: bflat Date: 14 Jan 02 - 11:46 PM A young midwesterner named Willie Porter gets more out of a guitar than I ever thought possible for a folk/blues artist. He is also a gentle man and his music reflects his soul. Love his stuff. Ellen |
