Subject: RE: Why so many Willies? From: Little Hawk Date: 05 Apr 02 - 07:29 PM My mother was christened Mary Margaret Elizabeth...which even more thoroughly covers all the old time English political bases. It must have been a very traditional family. I note that Spaw and Shatner are now giving each other the silent treatment...each refuses to acknowledge the other's existence. Who will crack first??? - LH |
Subject: RE: Why so many Willies? From: masato sakurai Date: 05 Apr 02 - 07:35 PM Levy search (title, first line, chorus of first line) returned 43 "William" songs, 71 "Willie" ones, 5 "Willy" ones. These are outnumbered by "John" (122), "Johnny" (108), "Johnnie" (21); and by "Mary" (292). ~Masato |

From: catspaw49 Date: 05 Apr 02 - 08:20 PM Good job Masato....I sure didn't get that many hits on the John variants, but I didn't try Levy either.......And you sure are right about Mary too I bet. Interesting that in the US for the first 50 years of the 20th century, John and Mary were the two most popular names....I wonder how much that influences the Levy Collection? Spaw |

Subject: RE: Why so many Willies? From: GUEST,Eoin O'Buadhaigh Date: 06 Apr 02 - 03:02 PM I supose beng a 'Willie' is better than being a 'Dick' If Johnnys and Willies were popular in the middle-ages what was popular before then? The way fashions change what has replaced the Willies of today, or even more worrying what will replace the Willies of the future?? I'm worried and Im not a Willie (nor a Dick) I'm a John (hence the Eoin) am I on my way out? |

Subject: RE: Why so many Willies? From: the button Date: 16 Apr 08 - 10:23 AM Given the number of illegitimate births featured in English traditional song, it's no surprise that there's a Willie or two involved. |
