Subject: RE: Lyrics re The Corries From: GUEST,macca Date: 09 May 02 - 03:07 AM Always have been a great fan of the Corries. I think the first record I ever bought was an EP (remember them?) of the Corrie Folk Trio and Paddie Bell doing, among other things and thanks to a misprinted label, "The Queen's MariNes." After that I started buying the LPs and finally had to put them on casettes so my wife and I could listen to them in the car. I remember being dumbstruck when I heard Roy Williamson had died, but their work is certainly not forgotten. Our local session still appreciates the stuff from their repertoire which I trot out from time to time, even although I'm singing in scots and they're listening in Orstrilian. So isn't education a wonderful thing. However, wasn't the Bricklayer's Song - Sick Note - whatever first recorded by Gerard Hoffnung as an after dinner speech at the Oxford Union? I'm sure I have that in among all my other tapes and stuff. To judge by the reception he go, it was very little known at the time and his preformance is just magnificent. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics re The Corries From: Susanne (skw) Date: 09 May 02 - 05:27 PM Macca, searching the Digital and Forum Search for 'Gerard Hoffnung' will bring up a few threads, at least one of which contains the story you're after. Can't remember which one, though. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics re The Corries From: Joan from Wigan Date: 26 Jun 02 - 04:28 AM Their website doesn't have any lyrics to speak of, although you can buy their songbooks and albums there (very quick service, I can recommend it). If GUESTliterature wants lyrics to specific songs without buying, best bet is to first of all do a DT and forum search (box at top left of forum), and if the song isn't there, create a new thread asking for it. Subject: Lyr Add: CELTIC SYMPHONY (from the Corries) From: GUEST Date: 08 Oct 02 - 06:00 PM CELTIC SYMPHONY CHORUS Na na naa na na na na na naa na na na na Na na na na na na naa na na na na na na na Na na naa na na na na na naa na na na na Na na na na na na naa na na na na na na na ??????????????????????? We're on the road again We're on the road, we're on our way to paradise. We love each jungle deep that's where the lions sleep ??????????????????????????? ???????????????????????? Graffiti on the wall it says we're magic, we're magic. Graffiti on the wall Graffiti on the wall And it says ooh ah up the RA, ooh ah up the RA ooh ah up the RA, ooh ah up the RA It was far across the sea when the devil got a hold of me. He wouldn't set me free so he kept my soul for ransom I'm a sailor man from Glasgow town I've roamed this world around and round. He's the meanest thing that I have found In all me days of wandering. And I could see his evil eyes. 'Twas then he took me by surprise. "Take me to your paradise I want to see the jungle". CHORUS We went to each jungle deep For the paradise that we did seek Was no trip for the weak There waltzing with the natives. From the Amazon to Borneo From Africa to Tokyo To the darkest jungles of the world But nowhere could I lose him. I ran in circles every way He turned to me and he did say "I think you're leading me astray I want your soul me boyo". CHORUS I'm pretty certain of the verses but as you can see, not 100% when it comes to the chorus. Maybe someone else has got all the words. Linebreaks added on new Mudcat. Vectis again.... |

A letter from Rob Roy MacGregor to General Alexander Gordon (the Marquis of Huntly), written a month later, tells much the same story [...]. (Hamish Henderson in Cowan 4f) [1990:] For years Ewan opened concerts with this song, which he would use partly to test the acoustics, partly to check what condition his voice was in, but mostly because it is such a glorious song. It is a rallying call summoning the clans to battle and it was made and sung around the time the Earl of Mar raised the standard for King James in the North [in 1715]. Ewan identified strongly with the struggle of the Scots people to maintain their national identity. He learned this song from his father. (Notes Ewan MacColl, 'Black and White') |
