Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Susanne (skw) Date: 06 May 07 - 05:19 AM Bente, to save you looking in vain for "the mobile number I gave above" (but didn't), here it is: 0171 and 9836467. We're off to a tour of the town now, and to seeing off Wolfgang who unfortunately has to leave at lunchtime. (BTW, he fell asleep on the boat, so he was wide awake during the evening ceilidh!) |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: bfdk Date: 06 May 07 - 06:05 AM Sorry, but can't make it there by 2PM, I'm afraid. It's already midday here.. Pity I missed the ceilidh. But have fun all of you :-) Just as well it wasn't Andy who fell asleep on the boat, he'd have been one heck of a load to carry off there :o)) Best wishes, Bente |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Ernest Date: 06 May 07 - 10:11 AM ...back in Berlin... hope you are all well and have a mighty session! Thanks to all, but especially Susanne for organizing everything perfectly! Best Ernest |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Wolfgang Date: 07 May 07 - 06:48 AM Saturday night was just great with a folk Bigband. Ich war so richtig kandidel, aber hoffentlich noch nicht überkandidelt. Some of the instruments looked really unique. Yes, and like Ernest I want to thank Susanne for the perfect organisation. kandidel, norddt. (veralt.) fröhlich, heiter (in my five year old Duden) kandidel, north German (obs.) merry In my Brockhaus of 1935, they only have the spellings kanddel and kanditel but they have also the reflexive verb sich kandideln, sich betrinken (to get drunk). I have found nothing yet about the etymology. From a short web search it looks as if the word means "heiter" more in the sense of "angeheitert" that is merry in the sense of tipsy. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Ernest Date: 07 May 07 - 07:29 AM For those of you who were not there and therefore don`t fully understand Wolfgangs posting: Among the german musicians where 3 (the Lorenzens and R. Schwarz, hope I didn`t overlook someone?) playing in a band named "hans dans" whose cd is named "folksdans & kandidel". Here`s their website, where you can hear something: http://www.hansdans.de/ BTW Rainer Schwarz had played with Fidjit yeeeeaaaaars ago, if I got that right. Best Ernest |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Susanne (skw) Date: 07 May 07 - 09:00 AM Plus, Don found that he met Bernd Unstedt, one of our foremost Kiel players of Irish music, in Dublin way back in 1983. Fidjit also plays in a Swedish spelemanslag (?) with the well-known player of the Nyckelharpa , Alban Faust, who not only is a German living in Sweden but has done concerts at Hof Akkerboom twice (and we hope to have him back some time). Wilfried and Andreas are on their way home, Fidjit is exploring the region's golf courses before he catches the boat back home tonight, and I'm left to clear up and get on with the rest of my life. (NOT catch up on sleep, because this gathering was very well-behaved, with bedtime usually round about midnight.) You were great, boys, all of you! (Sorry to say I was the 'token sheila' on the Mudcat side, due to Letty's misfortune. I hope her father is a little better by now.) Now - who is going to host the 2008 Eurogathering? :-))))) |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Wolfgang Date: 07 May 07 - 11:13 AM correction: "sich kandelen" is "to get drunk". Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: MudGuard Date: 07 May 07 - 03:15 PM Made it safely home. Was a superb weekend. Can't post more right now, there is a problem at work ... More (hopefully) tomorrow. Andy/MudGuard |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Susanne (skw) Date: 08 May 07 - 05:18 AM I shouldn't forget to say Thank you to the people at Hof Akkerboom, who let us have the run of the house, and particularly Volker Schroeren, melodeon player and perfect barman on the Saturday night, who was virtually the only one to turn up again for the tiny Sunday session. Also, a thanks to the participants who collected 170 euros for Mudcat among them. They're on their way to Bill Sables via Grimsby in Doug's pocket. Now I'll go and pack for next weekend's festival. |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Fidjit Date: 08 May 07 - 08:21 AM Here is half of the great Ceilidh band Chas |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Fidjit Date: 08 May 07 - 08:44 AM and here are the other half. We three, "Gulliver" Don And Doug - the Mug - Chadwick, plus yours truly made up the last percentage. 110% this celidh band was ! We were rightly proud to be in such company. Greg, we missed you and yet we didn't. Hope your ancle is getting better. We'd sorted out a few tunes for some of the dances I was to teach in the back kitchen. Hoping we'd manage ok in no other musicians turned up. We needn't have worried. When you have bands like these behind you. Well instant success. Erhard sorted out the German dances for the very eager crowd of dancers. They got up for everything. I even learnt two to take with me to the next meeting I have with the Swedish dancers I play with. I really enjoyed my visit to Kiel and will surely be back. Hof Akkerboom is a great place. I was a nice surprise to meet up with Rainer Schwarz again after 30 years. He even was encouraged me to sing "The German Clock Winder". To a crowd of Germans. Well ! Never thought I'd do that. Went down well though. Susanne. You did us proud with your hospitality. All the sight seeing, Fjord trips and the eating places we visited were the best. Don and Doug - "the Mug". Thanks for the sessions. Good one in the garden in the sunshine on Sunday. And to all the other mudcatters that were there. Hope we meet again. Cheers - prost etc. Chas |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Doug Chadwick Date: 08 May 07 - 08:46 AM Arrived back safely, a couple of hours ago. A relaxing night crossing on the ferry was most welcome after a 600km drive through heavy rain and spray on the autobahn. I was glad I wasn't going the other way as a bad accident was causing a tail-back that seemed to go on forever. I really enjoyed playing at the ceilidh. The German and Danish tunes were much easier to pick up than Irish tunes and I was able to join in most of them. Unfortunately, my poor memory and a long drive home means that I can't remember many of them now. Susanne had organised perfect weather for the rest of the weekend and Sunday afternoon was spent by a select group singing and playing, under the shade of a tree, outside the thatched building of Hof Akerboom. I was hoping you would forget about the collection, Susanne. I was just working out what musical bits and pieces I could get for 170 euros. Thanks Susanne for organising such an enjoyable weekend. It was good to meet you, MudGuard, Wolfgand and Wilfried again and also to put faces to the names for Ernest, Fidjit and Gulliver. DC |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Fidjit Date: 08 May 07 - 01:23 PM Hows the "Mug", Doug? To jog your memory you can listen to some of them on the, Hansdans.de website. They have short versions of some of what they/we did. Chas |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Susanne (skw) Date: 08 May 07 - 06:50 PM Glad you're all safely back where you belong (until next time). And a little proud Kiel Eurogathering went as well as it did. Just one amendment to Fidjit's praises: Erhard was the one leading the singing. It was Hinrich from Hamburg who called the German dances (as he does regularly for us). BTW, he has his own very similar venue at home, the Heidbarghof. |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 09 May 07 - 03:06 AM And I'm back, too, and sitting at my office PC. Naturally I opened the Mudcat first, looking for the Eurogathering. Glad that you all enjoyed the jolly gathering, and so did I. Thanks to all for coming, singing and playing. It reerected me again for a year - without music the soul withers. My special thanks go to Susanne for the splendid organization, bed and breakfast. Still 296 days to go till retirement. Sing and enjoy Wilfried |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Doug Chadwick Date: 09 May 07 - 06:52 PM The Mug arrived safely home, Chas, and already been out to good use, though for cider rather than beer. However, if you remember my tale of disaster with my brand new coffee pot on the journey to Kiel, well my wife bought a replacement this evening and hadn't been in the house more than 10 minutes when the bag of shopping fell off the kitchen unit. I will now have to buy yet a third pot or else stick to drinking tea. I'll give the HansDans website a coat of looking when I get a few spare moments. DC |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 10 May 07 - 03:04 AM Poor potless Doug - how will the third coffee pot be demolished? Make your own unbreakable pot scoutwise: take a piece of bamboo holding about a half pint, put on a leather sling, and it will serve for all drinkable matters hot or cold (except for beer which can be drank out of bottle or can in the field). I still keep my bamboo pot I made as a young scout some 50 years ago. Drink, sing, and enjoy Wilfried |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Fidjit Date: 10 May 07 - 04:59 AM Doug The donation money we gave you was for Mudcat. Not a new coffee pot ! Chas |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Susanne (skw) Date: 10 May 07 - 05:16 AM Not that the coffee pot is in them (though the beer / cider mug is!), but I'm looking forward to the pictures. |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: MudGuard Date: 10 May 07 - 07:32 AM I'll try to find time tonight for the pictures ... |

Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Gulliver Date: 12 May 07 - 07:11 AM Hi folks, arrived home a little later than anticipated. Thanks to Susanne and all for a great weekend. I'll get the photos (all 100 of them!) off ASAP, though in a bit of a rush as I'm tied up with gigs this weekend. Take care, Don |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Ron Davies Date: 12 May 07 - 08:21 AM Sounds like a delightful gathering. I'd considered trying to join you this year but the choral schedule vetoed it--we did our last big concert on the same weekend. I remember visiting Kiel a few eons ago--great fun. Also listened to some of the MP3's on one of the links you provided. Man, I am way out of practice--have no chance with anything but Hochdeutsch--and I'd need some of the songs translated--not into English, but Hochdeutsch. |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Fidjit Date: 12 May 07 - 01:15 PM Anyone got any photos of the dancers?? Chas |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Fidjit Date: 12 May 07 - 01:59 PM Have some photos of the orchard- How do I put them on here? Chas |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: MudGuard Date: 12 May 07 - 04:06 PM Chas, there once was a possibility to put them up here - but since a big server Crash about 2 years ago requests for photo uploads are unanswered. But you could send them to me - I have enough space on my server for a few more photos. I'll send you my email address by PM. Andy/Andreas/MudGuard |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: GUEST,gerry Date: 12 May 07 - 04:27 PM Sounds like a great time was had in Kiel! I was'nt there but I was in Portaferry earlier in the year. I have a few songs including Arthur McBride and Mary And The Soldier which I sang there at www.soundclick.com/gerryburke if anyone cares to visit. See ya'll. |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Doug Chadwick Date: 12 May 07 - 05:23 PM I have some photographs of the dancers. Could you PM me your e-mail adress please Andy? DC |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Susanne (skw) Date: 12 May 07 - 07:59 PM Don, weed out the 70 worst pictures first, please ... :-) Ron, which songs did you have difficulties with? There are several in Plattdeutsch (Low German). If you PM me I'll translate them for you. Looking forward to more pictures ... will save some for the Akkerboom records. Thanks, lads! |

Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: CET Date: 15 May 07 - 07:03 PM I wish I could have joined you in Kiel. Alas, real life conflicts with holidays. I am flying to Germany tomorrow - no music, though. Just a court martial at the NATO base in Geilenkirchen. It was great seeing the faces of the friends I met at La Garenne. Edmund |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Susanne (skw) Date: 15 May 07 - 07:20 PM Edmund, you and Charmion were definitely missed! Hope you're both well and joining us next year. Which brings on the question: Where are we Eurogathering next year? Any ideas? |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 16 May 07 - 03:03 AM Edmund - since there were very few cows where we met (almost none) we should have liked to hear Charmion serenading the fish. Geilenkirchen is too far from my home or I should have tried to meet you there for a drink and some robber songs. |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Fidjit Date: 16 May 07 - 04:16 AM Well done Doug. And you too Andy. Chas |

Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: GUEST,Noreen Date: 17 May 07 - 01:30 PM Ah- as it was tomorrow, I assumed that you had, with your normal efficiency Andreas, already put them up. I suppose in that case it was the I hope that I didn't fully understand. Sorry for doubting you :0) Great pics all- wish I had been able to get there. Perhaps next year? |
Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel From: Susanne (skw) Date: 17 May 07 - 07:19 PM Definitely next year, I hope! Maybe you could suggest a convenient location, Noreen? :-) Great pics, Andy and Doug! I'll suggest the 'Laboe Harbour' one for their promotional brochure! Oh, and Chas has given warning that he may be back here with his Swedish dancers some time in the summer. Something else to look forward to. |
