It was truly fab! Thanks to Ali and the committee for booking us-we had a wonderful time- highlights are too many to mention but definitely singing with The Younguns singing in Friday nights concert and hearing Hamish Currie's lovely rendition of Sweet Minerva and hearing the same song sung back to hazel and I in the late night singaround. Stanley Accrington kept us amused as ever and it was wonderful to hear Ewan Mclennan for the first time and the War of the Roses. Great to see and hug so many friends and knowing that I am seeing most of them again very soon. Well done to everyone!

Did you mean full body makeover or takeover? I'm waiting for someone to "takeover" my body!!!

Next year's guests include
Dougie Maclean
Duncan McFarlane Band
Elbow Jane
Bernard Wrigley
Ruth Fuga and Ken Powell

so I'll see if I can persuade them to get The Young 'Uns back for you all!

And I WILL be at Whitby - albeit it only for Tues to Thurs -so can't wait!

I would hope the committee would have been persuaded by the ovation they got on Saturday night....better than ANY other performer over the weekend. I've never known anything like that at Saddleworth. They were the best act their hence why they should be headlining a concert next year! Plus it was a packed house for them and as soon as they had finished everyone just followed them into the bar!!! Incredible!

Just snatching a couple of minutes out from work to say thanks to Ali and the rest of the committee, stewards etc. for making the weekend run so smoothly and such an enjoyable experience once again. Obviously from a personal perspective it was nice to be paid for attending this time :)...but also enjoyed the wealth of talent at the sessions & concerts I managed to get to; I particularly enjoyed the Askew Sisters who've just grown so much as performers since I last saw them play in Southampton about 3-4 years ago; and also Ewan Maclennon's consummate musicianship. Well done to all involved- hope to be back soon.

I've just had a mad thought; maybe we should invite Simon Cowell and his team of so called 'experts' to next years festival to show him some real genuine talent!?

You must be Joking Vin!!
Simon Cowell will have never seen nor could he appreciate the true value of folk song and folk singers

Some of the finest and moving performances I have ever heard have come from people who are not brilliant singers!

Now that Simon Cowell has suddenly discovered that an unglamorous middle-aged woman can be a good singer, perhaps he should be invited to some folk festivals - he might even realise that it's not as unusual as he'd thought...

I remember when my daughter turned on BGT(?) on the Sunday morning after a wonderful night in Hodgsons at Beverley Folk Fest(Jun 09) and I said to her 'BGT was in Beverley last night, without the cameras and hype' and there was a room full of 'Susan Boyles' - from whom came the most magnificent sound.
That talent is alive and kicking in so many pubs/clubs and festivals and it comes with atmosphere and generally no heartache (WILL I WIN tonight?) It is, to me, one of the best medicines, a therapy of lifted voices joined in harmony and no TV can capture it or the sensation of elevation when voices join in song.
Wow. Saddleworth had it and I'm sure Warwick will too - and wherever you head next. It's a tonic that can't be bottled, and I'm looking forward to the next sip.

Thanks to everyonewho made Hissyfit's Friday night buzz. I (we) had Such a brilliant weekend. La Kelly is well and truly back.
Lots of Love, Hazel.

Yes, it was a great weekend, but beware of the Hissyfit fashion police.

Ali was heard to say to The Young Un's before they went on stage
"Will you bring yourselves off at the end of your performance or do you want me to do it".

No shame that woman.

Just to add to all the other thanks, Karen and I (two of the Bailey Sisters) had a fabulous time. Taking part in the Hiring Fair was really good experience for us, and we enjoyed taking part in a couple of singarounds too! It's a great festival and we'll be back next year!

I'm going to look out for that concert Vin2, so I'll let you know. Did you hear Zoe Mulford perform at Saddleworth? She sounded like a young Peggy Seeger, expecially when she played her 5 string banjo. Excellent!

My next "fixes" are Whitby Folk Week, then Fylde, where I'm MCing again. Can't wait!

Hi Ali; yes i saw Zoe in the Civic and thought she was brill. Great banjo playin and luvly singing - relaxed natural delivery. Know what you mean re Peggy comparison. Another one for a return visit in the future eh?

Oh and well done with the MCing - looked like you were really enjoying yourself - must be a natural (face paint and all!)

I've attached a link below i pinched from utube; hope it works if you copy it to your address bar. It's the Young' Uns singing their hilarious version of 'Doodle Let Me Go' brilliantly done in the Civic last Saturday.

Enjoy Whitby & Fylde and if you're ever in Middleton on Monday eve's you most welcom to join us in the Oddfellows on Oldham Road.

Sithee, Vin

Just got back from a week in Edinburgh to read all these comments.
I forgot to say thanks to all those who sang at the great Friday night singaround. Should also mention the maritime session on Sunday...Ingrid (Temple) kept saying to me "What great songs and what great singing!"..and she was so right. I felt a great lump in my throat singing "The leaving shanty" (for Johnny Collins) backed by Geoff ,Barry and Ingrid and the seemingly ubiquitous Young'Uns...and a whole room full of great singers.
Roll on next year!!

P.S. weren't Ubuntu great; another wee discovery of young talent from Ali & Co. Took a bit of organising but worth it. Well done Pet!

Me wellies are nearly dry now!

Seriously ....... we had some pretty bad weather (even for the Saddleworth micro-climate) Some may not have realized it, but we have had some drainage installed round the running track that did keep the water level down a bit! Thanks to all those involved in that (I know you wern't paid to do it) Good job lads!

N.B. When I said we I really meant them as runs it! All I did to help was to watch the water flow into the river!

According to the local residents that I spoke to over the weekend, the site is not much good as an athletics facility or rugby pitch either. Apparently, it rains when we're not there. They're more desperate to fix it than us!

I've seen the video before - don't know who the man is who's laughing, but obviously he's some kind of sadist. Case for the NSPCC there I feel!

Many of the evaluations indicate how strongly people feel about the quality of the singing and singarounds at Saddleworth - several have told me that they are some of the best in the country. Maybe they equal those at Cleethorpes Geoff T?

Right back in the early days of the Festival, I wanted it to be a "singing" festival, so enlisted the help of many friends - including Mo and Joe, Geoff Turner etc. - but I'd also like to mention (and thank) the Shellbacks for their contribution to making this happen. It's so sad that they've finished now - or will have at the end of Hull weekend - so thanks very much to all of you! I hope you come back next year anyway and carry on the singing!!
