Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: mike gouthro Date: 21 Nov 07 - 07:49 PM It's described as PAL so it probably won't play in North America, but with Jerry Douglas involved, a North American version may come along. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: michaelr Date: 21 Nov 07 - 05:53 PM Amazon UK has it scheduled for DVD release - but will it play on US machines? |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: mike gouthro Date: 21 Nov 07 - 03:16 PM I found this comment on a youtube session video - and a BBC4 discussion thread confirmed the upcoming release: "Series 3 will be available on DVD on Amazon UK on Nov 12th :). But I haven't found a listing for series 1 and 2 yet." My apologies for posting a separate thread yesterday on the current online viewing availability of the sessions on the RTE site. I searched before posting but did not find this thread. Here's the RTE link: http://www.rte.ie/tv/transatlanticsessions/index.html |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: MoorleyMan Date: 21 Oct 07 - 10:51 AM Has anyone got firm info on the DVD availability of series One please? I couldn't find it on the Footstompin site mentioned in an earlier post... |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Declan Date: 21 Oct 07 - 06:18 AM Ian, As Nick has pointed out a few posts up there is one more program to go on BBC4. At leaset the voice-over at the end of last week's program on BBC4 said there would be. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Ian cookieless Date: 21 Oct 07 - 06:10 AM I hope the DVD will have all the programmes. Unless I have missed a broadcast, only 5 of the 6 programmes have been aired. One week it didn't go out because of Emmylou night. It seems BBC4 just decided to skip one. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,buspassed Date: 21 Oct 07 - 05:40 AM Not for sometime, if at all, as a DVD of the series has been licensed |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Mr Yellow Date: 20 Oct 07 - 05:56 AM on BBC 4 it will be repeated. In my experience |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Nick Date: 20 Oct 07 - 04:50 AM One more next week Good as it's been I think the previous two had a greater diversity of players and music and hence were rather better. I think this has been excellent but disappointing comparatively - especially to the first one where the line up of the invited musicians (John Martyn, Dougie Maclean, Emmylou Harris, McGarrigles, Rufus Wainwright, Kathy Mattea, Danny Thompson, Dick Gaughan, Mary Black, Karen Matheson, Paul Brady etc) along with Aly Bain, Jerry Douglas, Russ Baremberg etc was really impressive. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Jim Martin Date: 19 Oct 07 - 10:43 PM Was this the final one on last night (BBC 4)? Interesting new series on after - "European Roots", first one featuring Portuguse Fado & Mariza. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,guilty Date: 14 Oct 07 - 10:10 AM you judge a guitar player on his teeth? and you don't even know what bagpipes are... |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Jimi Date: 29 Sep 07 - 11:44 AM Well if he got them capped, maybe he could !!! |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: NormanD Date: 29 Sep 07 - 11:25 AM His name is Jerry Douglas, and he plays with his fingers, not his teeth. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Mr Observant Date: 29 Sep 07 - 10:14 AM that yank steel guitar player has very distracting bad teeth; and that bagpie solo at the end of the last song was a bit ropey. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Declan Date: 29 Sep 07 - 10:06 AM Thinking about this, a lot of the reason for the re-packaging is that, unlike BBC4, RTE has commercial breaks. This means that, while the BBC4 programs run to more or less the full 30 minutes, the RTE program is just about 25 minutes long. In fairness to RTE they don't spoil the flow of the program by sticking an ad break in the middle of it, but I suspect they compensate for this by having longer breaks before and after. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: van lingle Date: 29 Sep 07 - 09:43 AM You guys are killing me! I've seen the clips from the first two parts and can't wait for the DVD's and Bonzo that man does some serious work on that fiddle. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Bonzo3legs Date: 29 Sep 07 - 08:20 AM They all seem to be having a good time - pity that Ali Bain never smiles! |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Declan Date: 29 Sep 07 - 07:06 AM As far as I remember the two flautists were Michael McGoldrick and Ronan Browne. I think Mike is left-handed. Not sure about the flute. I don't think either of them plays a flute with keys. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,buspassed Date: 29 Sep 07 - 06:01 AM There are two flautists playing in the series so far, one plays with the keys to the left the other with keys to the right. Which is playing left handed and does he play a L/H flute? |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Jim Martin Date: 29 Sep 07 - 04:49 AM Must do the same thing for BBC 4. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Jim Martin Date: 29 Sep 07 - 04:48 AM Yes, it's interesting, this different packaging thing. I emailed RTE to get their comments on the subject, but I'm still waiting! |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Declan Date: 28 Sep 07 - 03:36 PM Tonights RTE episode featured most of the material from last weeks BBC4 program but it was packaged differently - no interview with Sam Lakeman and no set of tunes at the end for example. Obviously there is a feeling that some material will be of more interest to Irish viewers than British ones and vice versa. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Effsee Date: 28 Sep 07 - 03:34 PM Just started...repeated at 03:10 AM!! |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Princess Wellies Date: 22 Sep 07 - 10:45 AM ....and Declan for the title! I've found it on youtube - I love this song! |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Princess Wellies Date: 22 Sep 07 - 10:38 AM Thanks effsee! |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Jim Martin Date: 22 Sep 07 - 08:40 AM Have sent email to info@rte.ie (Brigitte Murphy, RTE Communications) for their views, if any, on the subject. Perhaps other 'Catters would like to do the same, if only just to show that there is a very lively, active interest in the series and hopefully, encourage them (BBC & RTE) to produce more! |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Jim Martin Date: 22 Sep 07 - 08:22 AM Very interesting, thanks for that, Declan. I think I'll pass that one on to Paddy Glackin in RTE, maybe he'll know (or know somebody who does know) the answer. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Declan Date: 22 Sep 07 - 07:29 AM Just checked my recordings. Program 2 as shown on BBC4 featured Jerry Douglas, Eddi Reader, Darrell Scott, Jenna Reid, Julie Fowlis, Cara Dillon and Sam Lakeman and Aly Bain, Jenna Reid and Bruce Molsky, whereas the second program on RTE featured Aly Bain Jenna Reid & Donal Lunny (different set of tunes from BBC4), Joan Osborne (also with Donal Lunny) Paul Brady, Ross Barenburg, Karen Matheson & Donald Shaw and finished up with Sharon Shannon, Jim Murray and Gerry O Connor. Those are the featured artists as they appear in the captions on the program - each performance features many more musicians - sometimes, particularly on instrumentals, its difficult to tell why one or two are singled out in the captions. Anyway does anybody know whether the programs have been packaged differently for the different channels or are RTE just showing the programs in a different sequence? |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Declan Date: 22 Sep 07 - 06:58 AM Jim RTE started a week earlier than BBC 4, so you might think it was a different program simply because they are a week ahead. I'm fairly sure that that that is not the only reason. I think the programs have been packaged differently for the RTE Audience, for whatever reason. For example I understand Paul Brady singing the Lakes of Pontchartrain appeared in the first program on BBC4, but on RTE it was in program 2. I've done some taping on both channels, so I should be able to check if this is actually the case. The name of the song Cara Dillon sang is Garden Valley by (I think Sam Lakeman). I'm not normally a big fan of Cara's but I really enjoyed this song. |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Jim Martin Date: 22 Sep 07 - 12:17 AM Also caught the tail end of prog on RTE 1 at 19.30 - 20.00, but seemed to be a completely different one? |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Effsee Date: 21 Sep 07 - 05:00 PM Cara Dillon. Can't remember the title. The prog is repeated at 03.50am tomorrow. Set the DVD/VHS recorder! |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: GUEST,Princess Wellies Date: 21 Sep 07 - 04:15 PM I just caught the end of this evening's programme and was wondering if anyone knows who the penultimate singer was and what song she was singing? She was on just before Aly Bain, Phil Cunningham and others finished off the show. |

This edition opens with Jerry Douglas demonstrating his Grammy award-winning dobro skills. Other highlights include Eddi Reader with Tim O'Brien, and Julie Fowlis with Donal Lunny. [S] |

Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: julian morbihan Date: 16 Sep 07 - 04:51 AM "Why Aly Bain every time?" Because he thought of the idea first, and mortgaged his house to pay for the first series to be produced. And a pretty good job he's made of it too. So from me "Thanks, Aly. Keep it up!" |

Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Nick Date: 15 Sep 07 - 11:44 AM Bonzo3legs * he's a great fiddler - look at his bowing on the first tune |
Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Declan Date: 15 Sep 07 - 11:19 AM It's always likely that Aly Bain will feature on the program, given that he is the Musical Director. He has also shown through his work on "Down Home" and other TV programs that he has a good appreciation of North American music as well as the trad music of these islands. He alwso seems to have good contacts with the Nashville contingenmt - and he's a great fiddle player. I saw episode 2 on RTE last night and you are in for a treat. |

Subject: RE: Transatlantic Sessions 3 From: Declan Date: 14 Sep 07 - 08:20 PM They've shown two episodes on RTE (Irish Television). Some lovely music in Part 2 which was shown tonight. If the rest of the series is as good as the opening programs it will be weel worth watching. |
