I was actually wondering, with reference to Gosport and Fareham, whther it would be possible to invade the free vans area and just go to the sessions without buying a ticket....

For my sins, I'll be spending much of the weekend laying out the next issue of Mardles Magazine. I'd been wondering how I'd find the time to do it.

Not that I'm in the least bit happy about the cancellation of Miskin and the reasons behind it.

Actually the Derbyshire Mudgather is rather close for me though I have commitments elsewhere. Are we becoming southern centric by any chance? :-)

However it is not a huge place. And despite some rave reviews the landlord can be be very eccentric (ie miserable) and the beer is not always as fantastic (IMHO) as some people crack on about, which is understandable since the pub has very restricted opening hours.

But don't bother criticising the beer if you want to stay in the pub.

I strongly take exception to your comments about Geoff & the 3 Stags Heads.

Mr Happy & fiends have been there loads of times, not just Easter, & have always received a warm welcome from both the landlord & his wife; & the food & drink have unfailingly been top-notch!

One can only go on one's own experience. I live in Sheffield and it was on my circuit of pubs to visit for years.

My experience is not as good as yours. I have not complained about the food. Are you denying the landlord CAN be miserable? I am not saying he is all the time, but that he can be some of the time.

You have clearly been lucky - or I have clearly been unlucky.

I have made the greatest criticism and stopped visiting and I hope those who do go have an excellent time.

I posted this on the Miskin Obit thread before I saw this one. Sorry to keep repeating myself...

Could a do it yourself sing and play be put together in just two weeks?
I could probably do one here in my home town but it is so far away from Miskin that travel would be horrendous for everyone from the north.
Is there a suitable venue somewhere near the border (well away from Miskin in order not to queer Andy's pitch).
We would need a campsite with statics (for the indoor campers) and an on-site pub with decent beer or a pub with a stable, skittle alley, function room or barn attached within easy walking distance.
On the other hand Ali organises a good do based round a junior school. The playground and car park for vans, the field for tents and the classrooms for indoor campers. The hall could, at a push, be used for a concert and/or for late night sessions. With a willing pub or three within easy staggering distance it could be possible.
Has anyone out there got the contacts, or know someone with them, to make it happen?

I posted the following on the 'obit' thread.

The Admiral and Mrs Admiral used to do a super Easter near Marlborough. I don't think it has run for a few years but maybe he could revive that. It was a super pub with a big camping field at the back, right next to the canal.

What about the Seven Stars at Knowle Hill?

Andy: PLEASE don't be worried about our not turning up in 2008. We would do ANYTHING to get Miskin 2007 going if it were possible. I feel so sorry for you, the pain actually came through on the email you sent round.

There is a pub called the Three Magpies, next to the K & A canal at Seend, near Devizes . They have their own biggish camping-field attached to the pub, and there"s a Camping Club site right next door, ideal for the camper-vans. I have stayed on both sites-- ( the facilities on the Camping Club site are excellent ) and the food in the pub was OK too. The two sites between them could take a LOT of people, if the pub was OK for the music . I think the pub has a shower and loos for their field-campers. Does anyone live near Devizes, and could pop in ??

OK, several ideas so far. We're going to pop in to the Trout at Lechlade over the weekend, but that field is probably too muddy. Will also be phoning a pub in the forest of Dean to see if there's any possibility there.

The Barge Inn at Honeystreet may very well be quite crowded, but perhaps someone (don't all rush at once & please put the reply on this thread straightaway to stop too many people phoning!) would like to give them a ring, here's their web-site.

The Three Magpies at Seend looks a good'n, and has a music weekend in September with Showaddywaddy *sigh* Again here's their web-site & as above please don't all phone at once as it might piss them off....

If anyone comes up with a good venue (as vectis described earlier) for a gather & sing, with camping & beer I'll be quite happy to offer administration to help co-ordinate numbers & arrangements. C'mon, lets find somewhere we can get together!!

The Barge Inn at Honeystreet was the venue for the Admiral and Mrs Admiral's Easter sing mentioned by Zany Mouse. Popular with Vikings, IIRC.

Found this from a few years ago... Priest Weston Easter Festival is in the hills above Church Stoke, at The Miners Arms.

Ms Lemon: I have spent the afternoon at Priest Weston Folk Weekend and the atmosphere was wonderful-some brilliant songs/singers and loads of great tunes-and you should hear a lady called Ann sing the blues! Shropshire is very beautiful especially on a sunny spring day. If there are any other folk weekends in Shropshire it has to be worth a visit. Turned out to Anne Lennox Martin.

Mr Happy: for anyone who hasn't attended this event before, there's a bi-annual folk gathering at: Miner's Arms Folk Club Miner's Arms, Priest Weston, Shropshire, 8:15 1st Wed (01938 561352) every easter bank holiday weekend & also another in the autumn. sessions are based on the pub, but there's scope for outside bashes on the campsite opposite the pub. camping's free but facilities very basic.

Mr Red: Priest Weston Shrops usually Easter. Small, based on one pub, and just SAR / maybe sessions. contact details on cresby.com or PM Ms Lemon here she knows the organisers.

Anyway it might be helpful.

Sal

OK everybody, I have E-mailed the Three Magpies, so hopefully we"ll know something soon.!! If you look on their website, you can get a good idea about the place----you can see their own campsite, whilst the commercial one is a few yards beyond that, out of shot. As I said earlier, I have stayed there before---It"s on a main road, and central---the food"s good ! -----The bar"s a reasonable size----There are real fires----the campsites are big !! There"s a canal to jump in if you get overheated, or you can go and watch boats go through the flight of 29 locks at Caen Hill just along the towpath.

Thanks for doing that bubblyrat, hope you get a good response quickly. Will report here later on regarding Lechlade & Parkend.

We had a word with The Admiral last night Kitty & he felt that the pub had become too crowded to be able to use it for this sort of thing anymore, but it may be better that nowhere....

Like many others I'm sure, my feelings about finding somewhere for us lost Miskinites to Gather at Easter are yo-yoing between postitive & negative, having shed a few tears on behalf of Andy & Jillie on Wednesday. Yes, there are some other good-looking events (Barnsley, Priestweston etc) that some people will filter off to and have a great time which is good news.

But I reckon there are a fair few of us who just want to be together, as we always are at Easter, sharing each other's company over a few beers with some singing, laughing and hugging for good measure. So I'm hoping we can find somewhere - anyone who's interested, keep an eye on this thread. If we find somewhere we'll need your contact details PM'ing so that we can organise numbers etc pretty quickly.

Nor me you. With my husband el_punkoid_nouveau (Ted) I have run the folk club at Miskin on Saturday night for the last couple of years. I'm small with reddish, long hair and tend to wear paganny/gothic/Indian clothes. I sing, play recorder a bit, dance with Herbaceous Border sometimes. I have two kids, Shady (11) and Richard (16). I'm quite loud and not exactly self-effacing!

I had no wish to step on Bubblyrat's or any other toes - but as I live fairly local to Seend went out to the Camping & Caravan Club site behind the 3 Magpies this lunchtime. Unfortunately, they are fully booked for Easter (and were for this weekend also!). They also advised me that the 3 Magpies own much smaller site was fully booked over the Easter period because they've passed on all booking enquiries to them since the C&C site was fully booked two months ago. Looks like a no starter for this year I'm afraid.

However, possibilities are there for the future with a village hall and community centre in walking distance of the two sites. Might be worth turning some thought to forming a folk song club within the auspices of the Camping & Caravanning Club - we could then in the future use some of their sites that have their own pubs or halls within the site.

For this year - do we definitely need a camping site near a public house? I know of a farm in Wiltshire where they have a CL - probably already booked - but I think they might be able to let us have a separate field and possibly a barn to sing in (if there are'nt too many young livestock needing shelter). Unfortunately, the facilities would be very, very basic - only one outdoor loo!!! Let me know if you think I should pursue.

The idea of the pub being the focus is threefold, really. Firstly, it is an indoor venue in itself, especially if it"s cold and / or raining outside. Secondly, it is assumed that the pub does FOOD, which is most important !! Thirdly, and very importantly, it will sell, in order of personal importance, A) Cider B)Un-oaked Chardonnay C)single malt whisky W) real ale X) lager, and Y & Z ) Campari and Babycham. And fourthly, of the threefold, it will have sinks and loos !! ( Not Rebecca, though ). So I guess that the , or a , pub , is fairly fundamental to the exercise !! But failing that, I would be quite happy with Supermarket Scrumpy, my own chemical loo ( just cleaned and serviced ! ) and somewhere for us Galley Slaves to do some cooking in ----- and a big tent for a session / sing-song. OK ???

Yes, I agree, Bubblyrat. I know we generate a good lot of warmth between us when we're together - especially when singing - but do need a few practical facilities. Let's hope MGAS has better luck than me and that The Trout might be an option.

I like the idea of the trout and would get there if that turns out to be a possibility.
On thoughts of other Pubs that do camping the Flower pots at Cheriton in Hampshire brews its own (very good) beer but I dont know how music friendly it is and cant do much to check it out as I no longer live in that area.
I agree with MGAS it is the chance to see my friends that is what is important to me rather than going to a festival.
I may be corrected as I have not been but the impression I have been given by many of the Shropshire Musicians is that they would not really welcome a lot of singers at Preist Weston. It is true however that few would argue with Annie Lennox-Martin, and I suppose the more singers that were there the more singing there would be, but if there is a chance for us regular Miskinited to meet that would be my first choice
Ann

Out the back, is a HUGE camping area, terraced, and running down to a Thames backwater ( weirstream ).Camper -vans might be a problem, ----I"m not sure. You can organise a set of grottibottis from any one of a million plant hire companies in about 10 minutes flat.

Other than that, all you need is a convenient cold tap.

The army teaches how to "field-wash" (basically, straddle bucket and sponge down from hair to the bits you don't wnat to drink from) and it can be done on your knees in a little tent.

Vanners have showers, tee-hee. Or if they don't it proves that the need for a daily shower is but a recent invention.

Camping involves use of a camp-stove.

If you need chemicals, carry a bottle of whisky, or a lighter.

But please do get on to an announcement soon or I shall put plan "b" into operation (some might like that , of course) involving scamming my way onto the fringe of a festival.....
