Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: Stringsinger Date: 24 Mar 07 - 04:12 PM The Smothers Brothers. Also, (whether you think they are folk or not) Bud and Travis. Woody and Cisco. The Delmore Brothers. Jim and Jesse. There is a little known folk-act called the Gardiners who I thought were wonderful. Peter and Isabel. Homer and Jethro. Doc Watson and Bill Monroe (Chicago Folk Festival) Scruggs and Flat Laurel and Hardy (all right so they're not really folk but they were great!) Besides, they played great ukulele and sang lovely tunes. Inman and Ira (not known well) Some liked Gibson and Camp. John Roberts and Tony Barrant put on quite a show. What about Ewan and Peggy? Leadbelly and Josh White recorded great together. Did anyone remember Hedge and Donna? Fiddler and Evelyn Beers (two of my fave American folksingers) Jean Ritchie and Oscar Brand Batman and Robin, Abbot and Costello....NOT Frank |

Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: Jeanie Date: 25 Mar 07 - 08:00 AM I will second/third/etc. Dave & Toni Arthur. Also singing at around the same time as them were : Geoff & Pennie Harris Remember them as a duo ? I believe that Geoff Harris is still performing and is back in touch with the Halliard members (who he had also sung with). I heard very recently that Pennie Harris is still living in the Colchester/Essex area, but no longer singing. That's a great pity. - jeanie |

Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: GUEST,Mike Miller Date: 25 Mar 07 - 09:49 AM I thank Spot for his correction, which was mistaken but understandable. Jethro Burns was an unbelievable bluegrass player who extended the scope of his instrument into other genres. His performance of the Carmen Miranda classic, "Tico, Tico", (with Steve Goodman on guitar) and his recordings with Chet Atkins are evidence of his versitility. But they do not negate his scores of bluegrass recording sessions any more than the Flecktones negate New Grass Revival for Bela Fleck. Still, I am glad that Jethro is remembered as a jazz artist. I have always felt that bluegrass is a form of jazz. Mike |

Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: GUEST,Keith Date: 25 Mar 07 - 10:09 AM "Paul Downes and Phil Beer. Easily the best I have ever seen." I still play the Downes & Beer Live in Concept album frequently to this day. Wonderful album and a wonderful duo. I saw Paul & Phil together again at Nettlebed in October 2005 and it was still as special as ever. They still do the occasional unadvertised duo gig, but those are normally only in Devon. Show of Hands I love a lot, but Steve Knightley has the disadvantage that I can't become 25 years younger and 10 stone lighter when I shut my eyes and listen to him and Phil, which I can (at least in my imagination) when I listen to Phil with Paul. Someone mentioned Therapy. I've saw them twice, once as a duo and once as a trio. They were very good too. |

Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: Spot Date: 25 Mar 07 - 12:06 PM Mike I stand happily, but surprisedly, corrected!! :-) Come to think of it, I do recall him and Rector doing a thing called "Ol' Bill" Very good musically but a tad too sycophantic for me..he didnt need to patronise anyone, such was the standard of his playing!! ( I always felt, rightly or wrongly, BM was a bit too far up his own arse!! ) Regards to all....Spot |
Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: Mark Ross Date: 25 Mar 07 - 12:54 PM Jethro Burns used to proudly state that he was the only mandolin player in the country that didn't know RAWHIDE. He also once said that his inspiration came from Django Rheinhardt. And speaking of dous how about Kathy And Carol. JUst got to hear them last month at a party for Sam Hinton in Berkeley and I was really impressed. Mark Ross |

Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: alanabit Date: 25 Mar 07 - 04:57 PM I should also have given an honourable mention to Andy Irvine and Mick Hanley. I used to have that live album of Downes and Beer. Paul commented, "Wasn't it awful?" when I saw him some time later. I don't think it was, but it definitely needed a bit of editing. I do not think they ever really got the essence of their live show down on record, but maybe that would be expecting too much. I am just very glad that I was there to see and hear it. I thought they were quite magical. |

Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: GUEST Date: 25 Mar 07 - 06:06 PM Tom Paxton & Dave Van Ronk Great artists both. However, having recorded one duet together on a compilation album, does not make them a duo. |
Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: GUEST Date: 25 Mar 07 - 06:45 PM A somewhat pointless thread IMHO |
Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: GUEST,Mike Miller Date: 25 Mar 07 - 06:52 PM The only connection between Paxton and VanRonk involved a poker game. Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: Big Al Whittle Date: 25 Mar 07 - 07:25 PM I saw Simon Praeger - back in the 70's - is he still around? He was in a trio then with a lady who sounded abit like the late Joanne Kelly - they played tamworth Arts centre and I bought their album. they may have been on the same label as Peabody an MacNulty - Matchbox (as I remember.) I often wondered if he was related to Lou Praeger who had the hit with Sailing Down the River on a Sunday Afternoon. |

Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: GUEST,Keith Date: 26 Mar 07 - 06:16 AM I used to have that live album of Downes and Beer. Downes & Beer were magical indeed. Paul Downes of course is so self-deprecating that he turned up at that last Downes & Beer gig with a whole three copies of his own latest solo CD and was then surprised when he sold them all. I know that Phil Beer is planning on including some Downes & Beer material in the 4 CD career-spanning box set he is currently putting together. The original plan was that was to go on sale to coincide with the solo tour he starts just after the SOH gig at the RAH next month. Whether he has kept to that timetable I know not, but I'm certainly looking forward to finding out what he has included when it does hit his merch desk. |

Subject: RE: Folk duos to remember From: pdq Date: 27 Mar 07 - 05:50 PM Leadbelly, I think you are right about her name being Ruth. It seems the correct name is "God Don't Like It" and it can be found on "Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 3 (1933-1935)" and on the Yazoo CD " Doing That Atlanta Strut: 1927 - 1935." Good song, kinda funny. Willie McTell was the best stroryteller in blues. |
