Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: Big Al Whittle Date: 31 Mar 07 - 03:23 PM Easter Carol from the Frost and Fire album by the Watersons. It starts off:- The holly bears a berry...... Way back in the 1960's some coventry teenagers did a lovely song for passion play. It was popular at the time and went:- gentle Christ, Son of God They nailed him up to a cross of wood I don't know where you'd get the music, but it really is lovely. I'm no traddy, but doesn't the Bitter Withy have an Easter theme. perhaps I'm getting it mixed up with something else. |

Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: Severn Date: 01 Apr 07 - 02:00 PM John Roberts & Tony Barrand have an album out called "To Welcome In The Spring", originally an LP on Front Hall Records (FHR-022) but now reissued on CD on Golden Hind Music (GHM 205). It is a live recording and it utilizes the same cast as is used for the Nowell Sing We Clear recordings that they do, but focuses on the coming of spring as expressed in British song. Waterson-Carthy's CD "Holy Heathens and the Old Green Man" (Topic TSCD562)has "Christ Made A Trance" and "When Jesus Wept The Falling Tear" "Christ Made A Trance" as performed by Martin Carthy also makes an appearence on The anthology "All through The Year-A Calendar In Music & Song" (Green Linnet GLCD 3069), as does Jay Turner's "The First Day Of Spring" if that qualifies. Al Grierson's "The Ressurection" off of "A Candle For Durruti" (also recorded by Ray Wylie Hubbard) and Phil Ochs'"The Crusifixtion off "Pleasures Of The Harbor" might offer some alternative views. The Soundtrack of "Easter Parade" w/ Astaire & Garland was issued on a twofer LP by MGM when they were reissuing all their musicals. John Fahey had an all hymns LP of guitar instrumentals on Takoma called "Yes Jesus Joves Me" that included a version of "Jesus Christ Is Risen Today" and probably has a few others you can use. He also recorded "I Am The Ressurection" on "The Transfiguration Of Blind Joe Death" Hope some of these help you rise to the occaision. |
Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please( to egg you on further) From: Severn Date: 01 Apr 07 - 02:57 PM Then there's the realms of Country and Bluegrass to mine from. Here's a few of the more obvious: "Tramp On The Street"-Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Jack Elliot, Joan Baez and many others. "The Cry From The Cross"-Title song from a Ralph Stanley sacred album. "We Shall Rise"-Joe Val & The New England Bluegrass Boys, The Sauceman Brothers, Stanley Brothers "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?"-Seldom Scene, Johnny Cash (w/ The Carter Family), Tennessee Ernie Ford, Stanley Bros. and plenty more. "Carpenter Of Wood"-The Bluegrass Cardinals (A very nice contemporary piece-worth hunting up!) .....Can PM album whereabouts on a few of these if needed. |
Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: Dave'sWife Date: 01 Apr 07 - 02:59 PM Emmylou Harris did a nice bluegrass version of "We Shall Rise" on her album Angel Band - very nice song for easter being about resurrection. It's up-tempo and not too formal. |
Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 01 Apr 07 - 03:29 PM George is 'standing over me with a whip' so I need to tell you that our little Easter film, "Ballad for Easter" has been posted on Youtube. We had access and permissions for all the James Tissot paintings, and he had done a beautiful Easter series-took him five years to tell the story. I did a sort of musical commentary for it; we went to a recording studio with a friend who played recorder and guitar, and I played my dulcimer and sang the vocals. This was 1957. It was shown in our church, and once in a Canadian church- otherwise no one has seen it. Well, springtime is here...Easter is coming. We hope you can see and enjoy the great paintings and my bit of music- and forgive me for talking about myself! To me the film is about the human condition, and the tragedy, the beauty, and the resiliance that is Life. Love to all, Jean PS: go to youtube, type in either George Pickow or Jean Ritchie, and you'll find, "Ballad for Easter," and several other of our (newer) videos. |

Subject: Re:Easter Songs(Side orders from Judas' Carryout) From: Severn Date: 02 Apr 07 - 02:42 AM Two more Bluegrass classics: "The Lord's Last Supper"--Don Reno & Red Smiley, Reno & Harrell, Bill Harrell "The Man In The Middle"--Bill Grant & Delia Bell, Ralph Stanley or even "They Laid Jesus Christ In His Grave"--Woody Guthrie (on the Library Of Congress recordings), Cisco Houston |
Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: Liz the Squeak Date: 02 Apr 07 - 02:59 AM Now the Green Blade Riseth - very old, possibly French in origin, can't remember who has recorded it. It's a lovely calming, reflective tune although it can go on a bit. Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band have a CD - 'Sing lustily & with Good Courage' ISBN 5013133 438324 - that features gallery carols from the 18th and 19th Centuries. It includes such great Wesley singalongs as 'Light of the World', 'Away with our sorrow and care', And can it be?', 'Christ the Lord is ris'n today'; Buyans 'Who would true valour see', and lots of other good stompin' hymns. Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: Declan Date: 02 Apr 07 - 06:37 AM Jimmy McCarthy's Bright Blue Rose as recorded by Jimmy, Christy Moore and others is supposed to be an Easter Song. I don't really understand what its about but it has an Easter feel to it. Gone Gonna Rise Again by Dick Gaughan, definitely secular but appropriate to the theme I think. |

Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: Charley Noble Date: 02 Apr 07 - 04:23 PM Declan- Would you be meaning "Gone Gonna Rise Again" by Si Kahn? I agree it is a fine Easter song. Another song of ressurection is "The Body in the Bag" but that would be a blatantly frivolous suggestion. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: Declan Date: 02 Apr 07 - 04:40 PM Charley, Yes I mean the song written by Si Khan. I'm most familiar with Dick Gaughan's version of the song. |
Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: Alio Date: 02 Apr 07 - 05:40 PM Oh my God, thank you, thank you, thank you! I've now got loads of ideas - too many for a 1 hour programme! I've trawled through all my albums, and found several of these. And I'm definitely going to get hold of the Maddy Prior album, which sounds great - thanks Liz. Ali |
Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: robinia Date: 03 Apr 07 - 03:03 AM Has no one mentioned Jean Ritchie's "Christ was born in Bethlehem" (verses go on to "down came an angel and rolled the stone away" . . . end with "go and tell your brethren, he's risen from the dead"). Is this perhaps the Appalachian song that an earlier post called her "Ballad for Easter"? Powerful (especially sung unaccompanied), very easy to sing along with (lots of repetition) and definitely "for Easter." |
Subject: RE: Easter Songs Please From: GUEST,Soundcatcher Date: 03 Apr 07 - 05:24 AM How about "They Whupped him Up The Hill" from Oh brother That pretty much covers the whole easter thing from the crucifixion to the resurrection Regards John |
