Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: George Papavgeris Date: 14 Apr 07 - 07:13 AM He should go trawling for friends - I just put in a request for his friendship. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: mack/misophist Date: 14 Apr 07 - 11:01 AM Not a member. Who is Les Sullivan, anyway? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: George Papavgeris Date: 14 Apr 07 - 11:09 AM Les is a Home Counties (UK) singer/songwriter of particular note, yet his songs are more widely known than he is as a person. You may have heard "Jutland", or "Roses of no-man's land", or "Harvest of iron", or "Natasha", or... etc. His songs have crossed to the US and Australia and up and down the UK. His second album is now out; both his albums extremely worthwhile, and will be much sought after one day. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: GUEST,Richie Loadsamates Date: 14 Apr 07 - 11:15 AM really dont understand how this modern myspace 'friends' scene works ..so what happened to the good old tried and tested ways of buying shallow fair-weather music biz friendships with expensive gifts and lavish parties ? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Jim Lad Date: 14 Apr 07 - 11:20 AM The man's only been playing since 1990 but I invited him anyway. Chuckle! Good Morning All, from the sunny Highlands of southern Vancouver Island. Jim |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Surreysinger Date: 14 Apr 07 - 12:08 PM Ah but George - trawling for friends? This then raises the question of whether you actually want to seek as many "friends" as you can possibly get, or whether you actually want to ensure that they are people you know. are acquainted with, or have at least spoken to or know you well enough to address you by name ... Initially I was restricting myself to just people I knew/ had had contact with of some sort, but then I started widening the boundaries somewhat - I've still only got 35 friends (although how two folk festivals and a magazine can actually be called friends defeats me slightly) - but its a small band defined by its quality (grins) . I'm hoping I am sufficiently restrained about this not to become a shameless hunter down of Friends and I'm still trying to work out how a black rapper from the Midlands could possibly think we might have something musically in common ... and he had something like 5000 friends on his space!!!) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: JohnInKansas Date: 14 Apr 07 - 12:31 PM Not registered at MySpace, but some casual browsing indicates that those with the thousands of friends quite often are 12 - 14 year old kids who've made up a phony ID and are, literally, competing with each other to see who can get the most "friends." The other common competition seems to be to see who can get the most flashing, blinking, blaring "inserts" illegibly onto a busy background that's the same color as the text. I found one that wouldn't load, but the source code for the page indicated 23 embedded videos all attempting to start and play simultaneously. I don't think I'd want them for my "friend." John |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Jim Lad Date: 14 Apr 07 - 12:38 PM Jeeze! Frogette is suggesting that those of like mind extend the hand of friendship to Les Sullivan in the true spirit of Mudcat!! Did I miss something? Let's try this again. Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: HipflaskAndy Date: 14 Apr 07 - 12:48 PM My policy. If time allows... (it does usually, I only go on there when I've some time to spare) ...I open up the myspace of every friend request that comes in. I listen briefly, the music may or may not be interesting. If the site takes too long to appear (overburdened with graphics, video etc) - I reject that application immediately. If the music 'genre' does not appeal/fit in etc - reject!... If the applicant has not bothered to make conatct with a 'message' in some attempt to actually contact me/the band personally - I reject the applicant (UNLESS! - I find the music DOES appeal or 'fits' with my own genre - then I DO accept) This whole process takes five mins or (more usually)less, at any one given sitting. I HAVE found some interesting music via this method, I HAVE made good contacts too. I have even made 'friends' for real! ...oh, and CD sales too! Not everybody's cup of tea, of course, but can be useful. The one advantage over thaqt it has over our own 'website' - is that folks have to KNOW who you are to google you/seek you out by 'name'... ...myspace has folks finding me/band by then randomly looking through/at other artist's friends - seems to work well that way. Hugs to all (Hi George! - 'ow ist?) Cheers - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Richard Bridge Date: 14 Apr 07 - 01:13 PM So what is his myspace? And, incidentally, can anyone tell me how to upload my music onto my myspace without becoming a "featured artist"? All myspace can tell me is that I have to write html.....but not what to write. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: DriveForever Date: 14 Apr 07 - 01:35 PM I embarassed to even ask this, but can someone explain how 'friends' works on Myspace ? How does one ask to be someone's friend, and how do you invite friends. If you just simply 'log-in' to your account, will you automatically see requests ? Any help appreciated; when I set up my account, I'll go see Les ! - Dave |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: JohnInKansas Date: 14 Apr 07 - 01:51 PM There are 4 "Les Sullivans" at Myspace, but I think? the one in question is This Les Sullivan. He was online there at ~01:50 PM mudcat time. John |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Jim Lad Date: 14 Apr 07 - 02:02 PM Richard: Here is one way to get your music on. I think "My space" may have their own radios but I like this one. Go to blastmymusic.com and upload your stuff after you register. Once you have that take the "My Space" html which Music Blast provides you. Go back to "My Space" and install the html wherever it suits you. "Your Profile", "Music Interests" whatever. Hope that helps. To make a friend, visit their space while you're logged in and click on "Invite" somewhere up on the left, I think. Hope this helps. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Barbara Shaw Date: 14 Apr 07 - 02:14 PM I discovered myspace about 6 months ago and am hooked! Go to http://myspace.com/ and then click on the menu bar option "music." Then you can click on the menu bar option "artist signup" at the far right of the screen. It will tell you how to do everything. Or come back here and ask after you've gotten that far. Friends: once you're signed onto your myspace account, you can browse and search for music you like etc. When you get to a page you like, there's a link where you can "add to friends" on each one. Click on that, and a note will be sent to that site asking to be your friend. If they accept, their photo will appear under your list of "friends" and you can send them private messages (like pm's here on mudcat) or post public comments on their page. You can go look at their friends to possibly find others you might like to add as your own. Click on the photos and you get to their sites. (You can actually go to anyone's site without being signed on, but you need to be signed on to send a friend's request.) This myspace friends thing is also apparently a good networking and marketing tool. You can post a "bulletin" which goes out to all your friends. Musicians use bulletins to announce gigs and upcoming events, band news, whatever. You can post your gig schedule, upload samples or full copies of your songs, add videos, etc. If you have a cd on cdbaby.com with digital distribution, you can have those tracks available for sale directly on myspace via cdbaby.com's partnership with snocap. Free. I sound like an ad! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Jim Lad Date: 14 Apr 07 - 02:22 PM Do they take "Paypal" buttons? I was going to look at that today. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Barbara Shaw Date: 14 Apr 07 - 02:41 PM Tip: when you sign up as a musician (rather than as an individual), under the tab "sounds like" you should really put some genres and examples, which will make it more likely for searchers to find you and your music. If they are looking for a particular type of music that sounds like whatever, your site will pop up in the search if you have that "whatever" in your "sounds like" column. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Jim Lad Date: 14 Apr 07 - 03:20 PM I could never bring myself to do the "Sounds like" thing nor have I ever searched for someone who sounds like someone else. There are however, several web-sites similar to "My Space" who recommend that you do that. There is no way of figuring out what people do or why, I suppose. I'll away and have a cup of something that looks like coffee. Cheers Jim |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Barbara Shaw Date: 14 Apr 07 - 03:48 PM What I put in the "sounds like" box is: Bluegrass, old-timey, folk, early country, traditional, original. That way if someone is looking for pages that sound like that kind of music they might find me (and have). Same with the box labeled "influences." Here, have a look: http://myspace.com/shoregrass Searching on myspace music is very tough, I've found. There are so many members that it's difficult finding anything or you get back too many hits to go through them. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: GUEST,John Robinson Date: 16 Apr 07 - 10:15 AM Having sold CDs, concert tickets and started relationships with new venues (ooh er missus) myspace has been a useful tool. However, it is interesting that our YouTube channel now outperforms our myspace page in all those areas now, even though it is in embryonic form awaiting the "in progress" videos queued up in the studio. Maybe the link to the YouTube video drives traffic to the channel page. When sites like these are bought and sold for stratospheric amounts of money it does make you wonder how long they have to make their money before the world moves onto the next big thing. Unfortunately I suspect I'll never be in a postion to have to make those kind of decisions! For anyone interested: www.myspace.com/julieellison www.youtube.com/julieellison |

Now - I need to be sure it's OK with Max to use his logo as such (he may have others he wants to use, or he may nopt want to attract that much attention). But if he likes the idea, we can build the HTML string and Mudcatters on Myspace who wish to, can post it on their profiles. |

I have created the code to do it and a quick set of instructions. This is not rocket science, but I've listed the few steps carefully so it's easy to do for anyone with a Myspace profile. I have to send it to you via email because Mudcat does not support placing the HTML code into posts or PMs. So if you would like to post the Mudcat logo in your INFLUENCES at Myspace, please send me a PM with your email addy and I'll send you the code and the instructions (just a few quick steps). If enough people want to do this, we could probably get Max or Joe to set up a permathread or just a page with the instructions and code ... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: MMario Date: 17 Apr 07 - 11:26 AM *sigh* like many sites, MySpace just isn't practical for those of us stuck with slow dial-up. It takes me about 15 minutes to load and sign in. and about the same to look at anyones page. I don't have access to the computer long enough. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: JedMarum Date: 17 Apr 07 - 03:06 PM I've created a Mudcat Cafe group on Myspace. I wouldn't expect it to get become very big or very busy, but it can help us support Mudcat and vice versa. The group is called "Friends of Mudcat Cafe" - and the group URL is http://groups.myspace.com/mudcat I've tried contacting all the Mudcatters who have Myspace pages - but it's hard as hell to do so using the Myspace "invite" feature (probably by design to keep the spammers and the robots from beating people to death with fake groups) - so, if you haven't had an invite to join the Mudcat Group on Myspace (and most of you haven't), please GO HERE and click the join group button ... also, once you jpoin, please feel free to invite others to join, especially other Mudcatters ... but new folks too. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: George Papavgeris Date: 17 Apr 07 - 03:10 PM Thanks for the Mudcat logo HTML, Jed - it's up on my page too now. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: GUEST Date: 17 Apr 07 - 03:57 PM The logo code works for me too, Jed. I was a little anxious since I had heard on another forum that Myspace had decided to shut out connections to Photobucket, but clearly not so far. Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Herga Kitty Date: 17 Apr 07 - 04:01 PM OK, I've sent a request to cancel my account, because it wasn't a music account, and because the people I invited to be my friends didn't receive the invitation! Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: GUEST,John Robinson Date: 17 Apr 07 - 04:51 PM Nice work Jed. However, I had to smile at the inclusion of The Hipshakes. They are a punk/garage band who I worked with a while back, recording and mixing a single they had released in the US. Can't remember the context in which they came up but they are hardly typical mudcat material. That said I'm not sure much of the material I've worked on is mudcat material, I'm only here 'cos I have friends in these parts .... |

Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Barbara Shaw Date: 17 Apr 07 - 05:19 PM I think there should be some kind of myspace permanent thread or maybe links in the members info section or something. It's obviously popular and productive to have a myspace page for things music (and otherwise, apparently). It doesn't detract at all from mudcat, which remains for discussion and information and research (and catfights and the occasional pile of garbage) and is kept updated by the individuals themselves -- or not. And it's fun. OK, I'm still a kid at heart... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Jim Lad Date: 17 Apr 07 - 05:30 PM "I think there should be some kind of myspace permanent thread"..... I tried to touch on this, gently, yesterday. This is excellent networking by a bunch of artists of like mind. However, we are all guests on Mudcat and I think we may be straining our hosts' sense of hospitality by using their network to endorse another. Know what I'm saying? Kind of like setting up a "Sears" stall in "Woolworth's" |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: JedMarum Date: 17 Apr 07 - 06:30 PM Actually, I believe we're using Myspace to draw to and support Mudcat. There are lots of using Myspace ofr the business and networking stuff ... and many are longtime Mudcat fans and users ... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Jim Lad Date: 17 Apr 07 - 06:35 PM Hey, I'm the new guy. I'm sure someone will step in if we're crossing the line so I'll take your word for it. Anyone who can play as many Highland Games as you do, can work with anybody, I'm sure. Cheers. Jim. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: George Papavgeris Date: 17 Apr 07 - 06:48 PM Don't worry Jim, the Mudcat God is not a jealous one! Some incense and a couple of incantations will cover it. Indeed the two environments are complimentary. On mySpace I can find out more about fellow Mudcatters and listen to their music, see their mugshots etc. On Mudcat I can chat with fellow mySpacers, solve the world's problems, share likes and dislikes, argue and nail the definition of what is "folk" (my little joke), and so on. The two together provide an ideal environment, sort of a myCat or Mudspace... |

Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Surreysinger Date: 17 Apr 07 - 07:12 PM I've got the same problem that Kitty has/had. When I signed up to MySpace over a year ago, I hadn't appreciated that there were two avenues of entry (they don't exactly signpost it clearly do they - or have I been particularly dense?). So I have built up more than a handful of friends (not that many, but enough to make it a pain to have to start all over again!!), and blog entries. Originally I didn't have any music available to put up - but do now. Tech help so far from MySpace help has been a bit lacking in coming forth (got an email today which was definitely not a reply to the query which I had sent them - a new one has just gone off into the ether). Does anyone out there know if it is at all possible to switch one account into another without all the hassle of cancelling/starting afresh?? For what it's worth, my current Space is to be found at My space |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Jim Lad Date: 17 Apr 07 - 07:22 PM I got around things the second time by using one of my spare e-mail addresses to register. Don't take your old site down yet. Start a new one and see what works for you. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Surreysinger Date: 17 Apr 07 - 08:02 PM Thanks for the advice Jim ... but presumably I'll still need to start re-asking friends to be friends all over again (if you see what I mean)? |

Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 18 Apr 07 - 12:24 AM Thanks to Jed the Mudcat logo and link has been added to my profile under, "My Music". SOL |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Richard Bridge Date: 18 Apr 07 - 07:19 AM If you need another email address to join myspace in whatever identity you need, go to www.sharpmail.com and create one. It's easy. I have a number of them. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: MMario Date: 18 Apr 07 - 09:09 AM myspace and mudcat are compatible. Myspace allows you to post stuff that mudcat isn't setup to handle - such as music and video etc.; the forum and the DT are mudcat's strengths. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: JedMarum Date: 24 Apr 07 - 12:59 PM Chip - your Mypspace page s set to "Does not accept friend requests from bands" - so you will not be able to connect with your udcat friends, unless you go looking for them. Dave - Myspace will set the pics sizes to the parameters you've applied when creating them. Myspace does compress the pics also. You can use photshop or other programs toadjust the size and resolution of your pics before loading them. Lots of the picture loaders for PCs give you soe control over this too. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: JedMarum Date: 24 Apr 07 - 01:02 PM So - have we all connected? All the Mudcatters interested in having other Mudcatters as friends, and all interested in being part of the Mudcat group? We gotta get some more pics up on the group page ... please don;t be shy! |

Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: GUEST Date: 01 Jun 07 - 05:08 PM Reverting to my earlier posts in April (and thanks for your suggestions Jim Lad) I eventually got a reply from the powers that be at MySpace to confirm that it was impossible to transform an "ordinary" MySpace page into a Music one, and that it was necessary to start all over again ... so I've taken Jim's advice, left the old page open, and opened up the new one... and am now going through the time consuming business of inviting "old" Friends to become "new" Friends.... what a palaver!!! Thanks for the advice, though! |

Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Gulliver Date: 07 Jan 08 - 11:12 PM I've just started a site and am populating it with friends and pictures, etc., thanks to the advice of the good folk here. But I think I've made the same booboo as mentioned above, ie, my account is probably not a music account (how can you tell?). If I could just upload a few tracks and/or videos I think I'd be happy to hang on to it. Otherwise it looks like I'll have to open a new account to be able to upload music--is that correct? It's not a big hassle really, 'cos I could keep the present site for family/friends and pictures and stuff. It's at www.myspace.com/donconlan Thanks to Jim and everyone else for the help! Don |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: SouthernCelt Date: 08 Jan 08 - 01:55 PM Replying to Gulliver: Yes, you can open both a personal page and a music page, which I've done. With the music page you get the option of uploading a limited number of your music tracks (can't upload covers to which you don't have rights or upload other people's performances as though it's your own). You can put a song from any band on your personal page however. Also there are scripts for embedding standalone music players where you have more options of music to add to your playlist but if you do this you need to kill the one-song MySpace player or you'll get two songs playing at the same time. I don't have the standalone player so I don't know how you go about finding the script for it. SC |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Surreysinger Date: 08 Jan 08 - 04:51 PM Gulliver - yes, quite a few of those have been caught like that. If you have what one of my MySpace friends called a "vanilla" page (ie non-artist) there is no means of changing it into an artist's Space. You just have to start the rigmarole of signing up friends and putting up your profile all over again. In fact MySpace have now got a set of FAQ's which covers that one somewhere (don't ask me where!) Next time you go into your MySpace page have a look at the bar at the top - to the right somewhere you'll see a heading which is either artists or Music - sorry can't remember which. Click on that and you'll get an invitation to sign up (if I remember rightly) .... I'm sure you'll find someone on here who knows the details more intimately than I do, but at the moment without coming out of here, and going to have a look my memory is a bit hazy on it!! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Gulliver Date: 08 Jan 08 - 08:20 PM Thanks for the info, I'll investigate this further. It looks like I'll open a new site for music. Most of the music we do is traditional, so I guess uploads of this kind of music should not be a problem (?). Thanks, Don |
Subject: RE: Tech: Friends on Myspace From: Jim Lad Date: 09 Jan 08 - 03:23 AM Makes no odds, Gulliver. No Genres in MySpace. Do with it as you please. |
