Terrific work!
For clarity's sake, could you just let us know what book this is? Title, author? Thanks!

Subject: Index: Almeda Riddle's Book of Ballads
From: Joe Offer

Hi, Kevin - I find this book very confusing, and your index is a big help. Appendix III is called "Contents of the Ballet Book," but it doesn't seem to relate to the Singer & Her Songs book. I suppose I'd have to read the whole darn book to figure out what's meant by the "Ballet Book." Some day, I will.

The book Kevin has indexed is A Singer and Her Songs: Almeda Riddle's Book of Ballads (edited by Roger D. Abrahams, Louisiana State University Press, 1970).

This search (click) of the Roud Index should also serve as a pretty good index of the book.

Roger Abrahams, the editor of the book, explains that when Almeda was young they pronounced "ballet" as written, but she now pronounces it the same as "ballad." In the book it means a written text of a song, as opposed to the sung ballad. I think the Ballet Book was something she compiled - but it only has about 40 numbers in it, she knew hundreds of songs, and certainly could've written them all down.
Wonderful book! Her reminences are fascinating stuff. I see you can get a copy for about $15 at a variety of used dealers - Amazon, Abebooks, Albiris.
