I read the title and wondered how there could be a new festival in Hampshire without my having noticed it happening! Now I understand...a bit too far for to travel (from "old" Hampshire) but have a great time one and all.

I've got to remind Tom to make sure to specify Portsmouth, NEW Hampshire USA when posting events. Of course, we sometimes get sucked in by English place names, too. Especially since Tom and I live in Nottingham!

We've got some problems within the US, too -- Portland, Maine on the East Coast, and Portland, Oregon on the West -- and thousands of miles in between. (Not to mention the ocean's on the wrong side out there ;-)   )

Anyway, to reiterate --

Wish I could go. Cindy Kallet is an absolute gem. Nice write-up for her and the festival in today's Boston Globe Calendar.

I read that Ref, it was a great write up (by Scott Alrik). She's also play Saturday in Boston with 2 of her singing partners.

Cindy Kallett is a jewel. And we'll be interested with what Gordon Bok comes up with. And then there's The Press Room Gang to be savoured.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

It was a lovely show and I know WE had fun!   South Church (Unitarian) is a very , very nice venue acoustically and Klondike Sound do a phenomenal job as well.

We (The Press Room Gang) kicked it off and then were able to settle back and enjoy listening to Cindy Kallet, first solo (including playing fiddle and singing at the same time), then joined by Gordon Bok (Cindy does an incredibly complementary harmony on "Farewell to Nova Scotia") and then Gordon Bok solo.

Thanks to Cuzin Richard and all the sponsors for putting it all together!

Tonight is Greg Brown, David Francey and the others in the second half of the festival.

Part of the proceeds benefit PrioritiesNH Info Here so check them out, too.

Linn

Alright - I've got to know! Can one of you attendees write in with a report? If the performers are too shy, let's hear it from an audience member. It would be good to hear about some of "our own" on the big stage, and about the first night of the fest, in general. There were quite a few Bok fans hanging around the Press Room pre-show.

Tonight, as mentioned, is singer-songwriter night - Greg Brown (Iowa), David Francey (Scotland/Canada) backed by Craig Werth (local NH-ite) and three younger writers from the seacoast (NH) region, Chris Greiner, Laurel Brauns and Guy Capecelatro.

JudyB and I also had a great time listening to the Press Gang, Cindy Kallet, and Gordon Bok. Gordon seems to be in a jovial mood, which is somewhat unusual. There were no gloom and doom songs that I recall. I haven't heard "Frankie on the Sheepscot" in years, and we were delighted to hear him feature another John Warner song, "Wind in a Million Leaves" which is a haunting environmental song. I was also quite taken with Cindy's rendition of "Them Stars," a cowboys explanation of how the constellations were formed as learned from Margaret MacArthur. It was great as well to hear Tom Hall lead a non-nautical song, the Australian song "The Overlanders."

There was a fine crowd assembled, ready and willing to lend their voices to chorus or refain. Everyone was very well behaved and no bottles were thrown at performers!

Where I was sitting, the sound was not great but I think that's a function of the hall more than the sound crew. It sounded fine from the back and in the middle but we were sitting stage right middle.

Good luck on this evening's performance!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I was supposed to go. I WANTED to go. I see the Press ROOM Gang enough, but I would have gone to support them, and I love both Gordon Bok and Cindy Kallet. Only have one Cindy CD, and it's SO not enough. I also don't have all the Gordon Bok recordings. Does ANYBODY (other than maybe Gordon) have all his recordings?

I'm starting to feel better, but not enough to go out in the world, and Jeri Appleseed-like, cast my germs upon the unintentionally welcoming public.

Linn-

We were sitting right alongside Dortman and his Mate; didn't see anyone else from the Gloucester crew.

Your rendition of "Aunt Clara" was certainly well received.

Jeri-

I do hope you're recovered by the next shanty sing in May at the Press Room.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
