Subject: Anyone heard of Burton Ale?
From: Barry Taylor
Date: 02 Apr 99 - 08:53 PM

I know it's pretty daring of me to give Mudcatters a straight line like the one above, but I've been searching for ages to find if there are lyrics to this beautiful English traditional melody. Has anyone heard of it?

You can listen to it by clicking Burton Ale here.

Any help sincerely appreciated!

I'll so some searching tomorrow. I seem to remember a piece called "Goody Burton's Ale".

I haven't found "Goody Burton's Ale", but it's probably not the right one anyhow. I found in my notes on old songbooks that there is a song "Burton Ale", commencing "Ne'er tell me of liquors from Spain or from France", in a songbook with no date, c 1791, 'The Merry Companion; or Feast for the Sons of Comus', W. Lane, London. BUCEM lists a single copy of a single sheet song with music issue of c 1775 (at BL).

Thanks for the lead, Bruce! I knew if anyone could / would help that you would be first to do so!

FYI... I heard this tune on a James Last (the famous German band leader) album from back in the 60's. It stuck in my mind all these years, and I decided to include it when I got into the web tunebook hobby. I know it to be traditional, but that's the extent of my details about the tune.

Bruce O, please give us the rest of the lyrics if you have them. You may guess why I am interested-- June Burton
