A computer crash has lost me my DVD copying software and I have a number of tv programmes I wnat to to archive. Does anyone know of a free dowloadable no frills programme ? N.B., I'm talking straight disc to disc copying, not recording from scratch.

Many hopefuls and anticpatory thanks.

I don't do windows so I doubt if I can help. However, this is a good time to remind you to back up software as well as data. I'd be lost without my academic copy of Star Office 7.

It should have been backed up by the manufacturers when they sold me the computer. The copier came as part of a bundled software package, complete with backup CD. But the stupid sods forgot to include that particular programme. And guess what? They've now gone out of business.

In the freeware newsgroup, there is one guy who keeps us up to date on various graphics and audio/video tools.

Here is a search on his name,(CoMa, short for ConnieMagnussen, from Sweden) between Jan. and the present for the term DVD. He notes burners, copiers, etc... He is the expert I would look to.

Here is one application he refers to regularly.

If you use a Mac--OS 10.3.9 and above allow you to do this with the "Disk Utility"--it is very handy for back-ups of all sorts, and will copy any DVD, even when Toast won't copy it--

There is a free program that is used to compress and copy DVDs that would work for a straight transfer also, with no compression. DVD Shrink.

Yes, I've used Dvd Shrink with some success. Worth a shot.

For straight "disc to disc" copying, you'll need something to rip the protected video ts folder from its home in th original disc. Are you using a PC or a Mac?....

It occurs to me, though, that DVD Shrink uses Nero burning software, and you have to have it already. I think you can download a basic Nero package, and it comes OEM with a lot of burners (I got another disk of it with a recent DVD burner upgrade I did on my computer).
