Subject: Obit: Howard Larman of 'Folk Scene'
From: WFDU - Ron Olesko
Date: 22 Apr 07 - 01:42 PM

Howard Larman, the co-host of the long running LA based radio program "Folk Scene" has passed away. His wife Roz reported that Howard never fully recovered from injuries sustained in a car accident they suffered last year.

Roz and Howard began hosting "Folk Scene" in 1970. Broadcasting from Los Angeles, they gave a radio stage to over 2000 artists since the show began. Names like Randy Newman, Tom Waits, Stan Rogers, Jackson Browne and so many others performed on their program. The show is heard on many stations throughout the country and several CD compliations of performances from their program have been released.

Roz and Howard bridged generations. They gave a warm welcome to singer-songwriters and showed audiences the connection between the styles. In the United States, their program has been greatly respected by the audience and music industry alike.

During the 1970's they published a magazine called Folk Scene and they also produced several folk festivals, including the San Diego Folk Fest.

Howard will be greatly missed in the community. My condolences to Roz and their family.

They had a very long-running folk music radio show on KPFK, a pacifica

Area, and

The highlights of their series have been recorded and are available thru http://www.redhouserecords.com/store/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=RHR&Category_Code=109

I belileve their show has been carried by KPIG and other stations.

I have not much heard the Larmans in the past several years owing to their Sunday night time slot, but I always enjoyed the show. Betimes I would see Howard and Roz at folk music concerts. RIP.

Will Roz carry on? Perhaps their son, who has his own radio show locally, will pick up the torch (or the CD player).

John

A sad loss. I remember Howard and Roz from singing on their show in the late 1980's. A fine couple who did much for folk music. Sincere condolences to Roz and family. RIP Howard.

I heard that their son used to fill in for them on their show.
He may work with the band Big Sandy and the Fly Right Boys as
an agent or manager. I hope that the Folk Scene work can
continue..as many performers were encouraged and inspired
by the Larmans. Their web site shows some plans to do more
internet streaming and I wish for this to happen. Good luck
and best wishes. Allen Larman has a show from 2-4 on sunday
afternoon on http://www.kcsn.org/programs/redhot.html

Roz has said that she will continue hosting Folk Scene with her son Allen and engineer Peter Cutler. She is hosting the show tonight with scheduled guest Susan Werner.

Roz and Howard's dedication to folk music is evident in her ability to host a show at such a time. I am sure Howard is smiling.

I will miss that wonderful low slow warm voice of Howards' as he educated me in this wonderful world of music.
He expanded my knowledge by his own thirst of wanting to know the inspirations and highs and lows of the musicians lives. He brought those talented people closer to us,into our homes and hearts, made us feel as we were all one big family.
I always enjoyed the shows and looked so forward to them. This was my time in my hectic world to put everything else aside and stop and listen. I hope Allen can continue this wonderful tradition we have all become a part of.

I grew up in the L.A. area and Folk Scene was my Sunday evening's entertainment for many years. I too will miss Howard's wonderful voice and sensitive interviews. I remember going to a show at McCabes and hearing his voice behind me. He looked nothing like the mental image I had of him from listening to the radio. Howard and Roz were a great asset to the LA folk community. My condolences to Roz & his family. So glad to hear Roz will carry on with the show.

Got home from the San Diego Folk Festival last night to find an email from Allen Larman with the sad news of Howard's passing. Oddly, that very afternoon Mike Seeger and Lou Curtiss and I had been sitting in S.D. talking about Howard and his health and hoping that things were improving.
Sincere condolences to the entire Larman family; I understand that Roz intends to continue the show with help from Peter Cutler and Allen, both of whom are veterans of the program. She says as much on the program's web site at www.folkscene.com - sorry, I don't know how to make a clicky.

The Larmans are like an Institution, an Absolute, an Eternalthing- we felt they'd always be there. Roz my dear one, it's so hard for us to believe this news. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and yours at this time. The two of you have helped so many of us, so much. Thank you. Love and blessings,   Jean and George

When we lived in San Diego in the 80's, the cable company dropped KPFK, so I had to hide an antenna in my outdoor vines (because of neighborhood restrictions) so I could get Folkscene over the air!
Roz and Howard have done tremendous work, and Howard's interviews have been consistently interesting for all these years -- Howard was a wonderful person, and I will miss him greatly. Condolences to Roz and the whole family. Howard will join Ray Nordstand and they will be interviewing and introducing the Angel Band.

I've had the privilege of knowing Howard and Roz for years. I remember dropping by the studio during a fund drive (with Zacky Farms chickens as premiums) to deliver a rubber chicken. I remember seeing them at concerts all over Southern California and at the Strawberry Music Festival. I remember having dinner with them at my place and at restaurants. And of course I remember hours upon hours of listening to them on the radio. What amazes me about these memories is that they are uniformly positive. That's the kind of man Howard was. We will all miss him. My thoughts are with Roz and Allen.

I am shaken and heart broken to hear of the death of Howard Larmen. Paul and I have known them for years. They came to our wedding in 1981 and talked about it on the radio. We felt so excited!

They have given of their time and hearts for decades and have given us so much. I am glad Roz will continue the music. This is really a tough loss for so many people.. Lisa

Moving here from New York in 1988 I left the Greenwich Village folk scene and moved out to Los Angeles. Being a singersongwriter I hungered for the music that I left and found it in two places, from Brian May and from Howard and Roz Larman. Howard and Roz gave many opportunities to the songwriters that have no exposure and whose great music goes unnoticed by commercial radio. Howard will be sorely missed by me and is a great loss for the dwindling number of people who love this music and fight to keep it alive.

Howard Larman was a dear friend and source of inspiration in my life; it feels as if I've known him all my life. He and Roz were some of my first musical supporters, and have remained dear to me ever since I first turned on my radio as a young teenager in 1970 to listen to their show. To think I'll never hear his sweet voice again breaks my heart. Roz, I love you; you, Peter and Allan, along with all of the numerous FolkScene fans are in my heart.

Dear Folks:
Thank you so much for your kind thoughts about Howard. He was special. I have big shoes to fill. The local program on KPFK and the syndicated shows will continue with the help of my son Allen, and our long time friend and engineer Peter Cutler.
You don't know how much all your comments mean to me and my family.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Howard's demise. I knew him in L.A.

Howard served the folk community by introducing many newcomers as well as veterans. Howard was a generous and pleasant man and his appreciation for folk music gave a voice to many. Roz, I am deeply sorry. There are so many of us who will have fond memories and offer gratitude for Howard's contribution. I will treasure my copies of "Folkscene" magazine in remembrance.

One memory for me was to appear on his Folkscene show with Don McClean. I played guitar with Don as he introduced a new song, I think for the first time heard on the air or so Don said, it was "Starry Starry Night" otherwise known as "Vincent". Don had not been heard so much before Howard introduced him on his show.

What a sad loss! Howard will be really missed.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Howard Larman. I would always look forward to hearing the 'Folk Scene' program on Sunday nights for all the great music that was played and to hear many, many guests that Howard interviewed on the show. What a great, great interviewer Howard was! He asked the artist many questions of interest but without getting too personal. Howard was the best! I had met and spoken with Howard & Roz at many folk venues/house concerts over the years and I always found Howard & Roz to be friendly and personable.
Roz, Alan just want you to know that I am so sorry that Howard has passed and know that it will be very difficult for you without him.
He will be missed by many of us. I just hope that you will continue to promote the great folk music that we all love and that you will be able to get through this most difficult of times.
Linda
