Highland Council have decided that Skye should no longer use its "Anglicised slave name" and from this Thursday the island formerly known as Skye officially becomes Eilean a' Cheo and will be refered to as such in all official documents and tourists will be encouraged to use the new official name.

Watch this space - I bet my old mate Les Barker does! I seem to remember that he once wrote a tribute to that famous Scottish poet "Rabbie Coustau" entitled "Under the Sea to Skye".

Remember what happened when they tried to change the name of the Royal Mail? I bet it'll be back to Skye by the end of the year.

Oh, no! I've always had a special affinity to Skye, ever since I was a little girl. I understand wanting to change things back to the native language, though I would like to know the proper pronunciation of Eilean a' Cheo, please.

It's only for the purposes of the election, to differentiate it from other areas. The name is it's proper Gaelic label, and means island of mists.

I thought an t-Eilean Sgitheanach, the winged isle, was the "official" name and Eilean a' Cheo the colloquial name?

Right enough people from Skye are called Sgitheanachs, so it may be so, I'm not an expert in Gaelic.

An t-Eilean Sgitheanach is what it was called in Cape Breton, by people who left it 175 years ago.
