Subject: Looking for ELLA FITZGERALD song From: GUEST,WyoWoman Date: 07 May 07 - 10:59 PM I am trying to find a recordng of a song Ella Fitzgerald did and I don't know what album it might be on. The song is "I Didn't Know About You." Judy Collins also sang it and I also can't find her rendition of it. I have the lyrics, but need my keyboard player to hear the song. Besides, it would just do me good to hear Ella sing this song. I haven't had whatever album it is on for years ... Thanks in advance -- I have such faith in Mudcat, I know this request will be answered in a wink. --WyoWoman |

Subject: A Little Christmas Song: No-Ella From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 07 - 03:56 AM Wyo, Wyo, Wyo.... I don't know how to tell you this. I found versions of "I Don't Know About You" by the following:
But none by Ella. If any of these will help, send me an e-mail. -Joe Offer- joe@mudcat.org |
Subject: RE: Looking for ELLA FITZGERALD song From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 07 - 02:42 PM Can anybody help on this? I looked through a lot of recordings, but couldn't find it. As mentioned above, it's on Ella's "Ellington Songbook" album - but I don't really get the impression it was an Ella Fitzgerald standard. It may well be that all the available recordings are copies of that one cut from the "Songbook" album. I looked through three multi-disc Ella sets, and none included this song. The Great Song Thesaurus says lyrics are by Bob Russell and music by Ellington, published in 1944. It says the song is based on Ellington's "Sentimental Lady" [I'm not familiar with "Sentimental Lady"]. Another book says the song was popularized by Duke Ellington and his Orchestra, with vocal by Joya Sherrill. I'm wondering what could be called the "seminal" recording of this song - I don't think it's Ella on this one. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Looking for ELLA FITZGERALD song From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 08 May 07 - 02:54 PM Went through all my fake books. They give Russell/Ellington. While Ella has a couple dozen standards associated to her name this is not one of them. I will try P2P engines.

Subject: ADD: I Didn't Know About You (Russell/Ellington) From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 07 - 04:34 PM And here are the lyrics: I Didn't Know About You words: Bob Russell Music: Duke Ellington (1944) VERSE If they would ask me I would say, I have had a thrill or so. But that goes back to yesterday, A long time ago. REFRAIN I ran around with my own little crowd, The usual laughs, not often but loud, And in the world that I knew, I didn't know about you. Chasing after the ring on the merry-go-round, Just taking my fun where it could be found, And yet what else could I do? I didn't know about you. Darling, now I know I had the loneliest yesterday, Ev'ry day. In your arms I know for once in my life I'm living. Had a good time ev'ry time I went out, Romance was a thing I kidded about, How could I know about love? I didn't know about you. from Reading Lyrics, Robert Gottlieb and Robert Kimball (2000) Bob Russell (1915-1970) also wrote the lyrics for "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," which is a favorite of mine. "Crazy She Calls Me" is another gem from Russell. Oh, and "Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me" is another. |

Subject: RE: Looking for ELLA FITZGERALD song From: GUEST,WyoWoman Date: 09 May 07 - 07:26 AM Thank you, one and all. I'll track this down this weekend when I have time to work on it, thanks to all the clues from youse. I'm not wedded to having the Ella version of it, I just want to have some version of it so my keyboard guy can hear it. I have the lyrics. I didn't even know Ella had done a recording of it -- the way I first heard of it was from a Judy Collins recording a brazilian years ago. And now, I can't find that tape. So I started googling and came up with the news that Ella had recorded it. Thought that might be a more direct path to a recording. Not ot the tune of $250, however! ;=] Mick, I would like a copy of MP3 and will PM you. I KNEW if anyone could help me find it, the Marvelous Mudcat Musical MSleuths could do it. Hey Joe -- I hear you met my bandmate Martha. See why we have so much fun? Love and Rockets, WyoWoman |
Subject: RE: Looking for ELLA FITZGERALD song From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 09 May 07 - 08:12 AM While I'm on this song, I've also got a lead sheet (melody and chords) for it in F. If you'd like a scan of that too let me know. Mick |
