I went to The Globe tonight - all sorts of music including Bach. (no Ross , not 'who let the dogs out')

Have a nice evening Stevi. 2 Cancers and 1 Gemini. Could this be a trend?

Hi Bertie - good to see you back again - the folkaholics went well last month - there is a thread here - thread.cfm?threadid=100927&messages=32

As you know Cathy - I am Cancerian - I rely on Mystic Meg as my guru - a door with big knockers will enlighten my looov chart today

Sorry I missed Bach at the Globe - is it a tribute band or has the great compuser dude conquered death itself

I'm mostly not going out much - have fun at Baldock tonight (Steve Tiltston & George Norris) - Bedford folk club also at Daleys

I had an email saying that Scrump has shown great signs of improvement - thread.cfm?threadid=100362&messages=121

No.

How was your door with big knockers Ross? Baroque? Will you all Bach today?

John - apart from all the resonancial and vibratory aspects of your new guitar that we talked about yesterday, it's 'creamy' to play.

Ross - Who are Hugh and Jemmima? That's what the doctor used to call my twins before they were born. I just thought he'd made up two names - is this a spooky coincidence or were you an obstetrician in a former life?

Hello All

Happy May Day = 10 days late. Nice to see you're all still barking mad.

Padstow was brill Breezy was there and very much on form, so was Christine and lots of really good singers in the Ringers. Even those who kept going till the next morning ! We didnt get any sleep at all and then someone started playing the r.cordian (my new spelling) in the bar just below our room, at 4 in the morning. What fun.

Oh sorry, its me PA, working from home with tonsilitis. My boss turned up today armed with pop, flowers ..... and tons of work. He's a creep but we love him.

Hi all

Another 6am start - quite tired now. At least it helps pay for the Taylor.

Cathie - I am glad you like the new guitar - I am very pleased with it.

Quite hard to think of anything lively at 6.15 - ah well later starts next week.

Ho John - nice guitar - I wish I could twang it

Welcome back PA - mystic Meg says you will get better

I went to see Roger Waters last night - very interesting

It seems the band have banned him from singing all the Gilmour songs

It seems to work well

Dark Side was very good and Set The Control for the Heart of the Sun

Not sure about his new bee in the bonnet - the lovely wall Israel are building between themselves and the fab Palestinians

Isn't the London Underground interesting - discuss

I love the cosmopolitan world of The Underground and in fact Le Metro. It does get busy and squashy pre theatre times.
I found it very difficult when I moved from London to Stevenage - I felt people staring or watching what I was doing. Nobody takes much notice in London. I suppose I have developed People Watching Habit myself, though I used to think it was rude.

Maybe there are stages -
- going about your business in a world of your own
- trying not to lose your children or catch the double buggy in the doors
- wondering at the world and its inhabitants

Information is so much better these days, especially at links like Cannon Street. Security too.

Could you imagine yourself doing a Crocodile Dundee Walk above eveyone's heads to reach Linda Wotsit? Or busking even?

I hope the Steve Tilston gig at Letchers was well attended, he is a great guy, talking of which so are

Jim Causley monday herga

and from halifax Nova Sctia,

Dan Mackinnon Thursday Bishop's Stortford, well worth organising a party to hear, realy great songs as well as voice and guitar, very friendly natives and fantastic natural acoustics

then

Sunday 20th May

and yes Padstow was good

Hi John. - and Mystic Meg said it was going to be a tanned Australian wearing shorts that would bring me luck. I hope a tanned Welshman in shorts will have the same effect.

Nice of you to drop in. Were your ears burning? I was thinking of coming to St Albans tonight, then realised I had the wrong week.

My Dad's OK thanks - I'll be down there again soon.

'Striking up conversations is a challenge' . That's a surprise. Feel free to use the Barton Thread for inspiration. We strike up conversations here most days, ranging from 'how to rinse out your thongs in a camper van' to 'Stevenage won at Wembley last Saturday'

Hitchin John
Which type of strings does your guitar have? I changed to phosperous(??) last time at the recommendation of the shop. Should I try the bronze(??) again as either my strings are sounding tinny, or my picking has improved enough for me to notice that I can actually make different sounds.

Perhaps leave for a discussion on Wednesday.

Hi everyone

What a fab weekend - Roger Waters and then JB Priestly's Dangerous Corner at Dunstable, with a cast from Emmerdale & Coronation Street

Shame about the weather - I went for a sauna yeaterday to dry myself out

Welcome back Unicorn Man & Breezy (proper folkies with 'the knowledge')

I think Hitchin John has coated elixir strings on his guitar - I could tell

Is it true the Folkaholics are appearing at St Neots on the 17th July?

Is it compulsory to take a double buggy on public transport?

Folkaholics are aparently appearing on 17th July. See Winkwell thread.

I will bring you the programme on Wednesday.

I was going to mention that I knew The Folkaholics when I was there on Sunday, but feared being mobbed in their frenzy of excitement and anticipation.

Hi Cathie

Yes the new guitar has coated strings - elixir is the make.

Most acoustic strings are phosphor-bronze wrapped around a steel core different manufacturers have different sounds slightly a heavier guage string gives a better tone generally but

Hi Cathie

Don't be too quick to put yourself down - you are probably getting more of an ear for what is right,

I didn't finish earlier - heavier gauge strings general give a better tone but are harder to play particularly if you like bending the odd note. So string gauge is a compromise between tone and playability. I find playing all night with heavy strings and a high action is quite wearing but slightly lighter strings mean I can play much longer without finger fatigue.

With strings it is worth trying different types and gaugesespecially if you're not totally happy with your tone.

Hope this helps a little

John

Cheers to Hitchin John, Cathy, Steve, Keith, Eve, Roy, Peter, and Geoff for a small but enjoyable evening

It's St Albans this Sunday

Any performers out there volunteering for our charity night on June 23rd - Saturday evening

UNICORN CEILIDHS
-HIGH ENERGY PUBLIC CEILIDHS FOR DISCERNING DANCERS OF ALL AGES-

Present on FRIDAY 25th MAY – LAUGHING GRAVY

Friday 25th MAY is the date for your diary if you like a good dance! The monthly ceilidh season continues at Hitchin Town Hall with North Hertfordshire's favourite Ceilidh Band - LAUGHING GRAVY, who return full of energy and enthusiasm, to offer the very best of English acoustic dance music to the renowned Unicorn Ceilidhs.
Based on years of experience, the band's style is firmly rooted in the English tradition, but draws its influences from far and wide.
French, Scottish, Welsh and American roots are explored in an eclectic repertoire that gives energy to the dancers, and leads them into the figures and forms of the dances.
Featuring fiddle, accordion, melodeon, rhythm guitar and bass, the arrangements combine to keep the dancers dancing all evening, whether experienced or beginner!

Led by the vastly experienced caller HUGH RIPPON, a full evening of reels, jigs, hornpipes and step-hop dances is guaranteed, with enough guidance to ensure that even the rawest beginner is not left on the sidelines.

Experienced dances need not worry either, for Hugh's choice of dances will delight and challenge all – his repertoire is honed and polished from years of experience of calling for dancers of all ages and abilities. You don't even need a partner!

Unicorn Ceilidhs take place generally on the last Friday of the month at Hitchin Town Hall, Brand Street, Hitchin, Herts

Doors open at 7.30 for an 8.00 p.m. start, with an 11.30 p.m. finish – entry is only £8.00 for adults and £4 for children under 14. Tickets are available at the door, or in advance from 01582 733113 / 724261

Hello Fellow Chunkie Bum Bartoners,

Doctor Who was a bit weird - all a bit Goldfinger meets Moonraker really. The man in the escape pod looked a bit disappointed that he wasn't going to spend his last dying moments in ecstasy, but by having to listen to Martha ring her Mum! For Goodness sake.

How can you have a collision impact with the Sun - I thought it was made of gases. I think I missed the plot there.

Ross, MM says that the initial S identifies your new love. By 31st May, so tick tock (this is cool dude talk for hurry up Mum).

All that ceilidh business sounds exhausting - far too much rushing around for my liking.

Dr Who has always been abit odd. My ol' man recons they keep loosing the middle two pages of the scipt, and nobody has noticed yet.

Mystic Meg on Line !! ??? I thought that was Ross. I'm a Russell Grant girl, meself.

Thank you Cathie, yes I'm much better. Interestingly when I had my tonsilitis thingumy, I have just found that a neighbour had a similar infection but a lot worse. This coincided with a local farmer spraying the fields next to our's (and my neighbour's) with amonium sulphate (sorry if its spelt wrong) to kill germinating rape seed which had blown on to his land from another farm. We think that may have been the cause as every time we coughed we both could taste amonia and thought we were imagining it! We're both much better now but I still have slightly yellow eyelids! And you thought Dr Who was strange!

I cured my boss of late meetings - I just take the time off (time + half) the following morning. He only did it once.

Worcestershire weather is wonderful !

Hi everybody - it's sunny today in Biggleswade

MM says I must get everthing out in the open if I want to get on

It's folk/acoustic tunes and songs around the room this Wednesday at the Bull in Barton-Le-Clay - 23rd

Winkwell is this Sunday afternoon - 27th

Then the following Thursday - 31st

Then King Harry is following Tuesday (two weeks from today) - 5th

CHARITY DAY IS SATURDAY THE 23RD at the Bull Barton Beds - Guests confirmed for the evening are John Breeze, Chris Flegg, Folkaholics, Mel/Trish/Zoe and Steve Last

If Doctor Who could face the sun to save the girlie - why couldn't he just walk into the hot room and get the Tardis?

Wouldn't you before you collide?

Yes, Red will look quite smart cos its dressage. We'll try anything to take the judges attention of our performance.

Chelsea sounds like fun but wear sensible shoes. Dont really like the Mars garden that won the award, I'm more of a cottage garden person. What will you be doing in the circus? Lion Taming?? dont put your head in his mouth if he looks hungry.

House boats always sound lovelly, but how do you know if your foundations have gone - do you get that sinking feeling.

What nationality is Cathie's other leg?

As they say in Russia - Moscow, work to do.

Unless people dressed up as dragons count

Well done PA - Do you get a trophy/ribbon/prize? Extra treats for Mr Red.

Do you see in the news there are recommending no drinking if you are trying to have a baby. Soon they will be advocating no sex.

I am so glad I was able to take responsibility for my own pregancies - ate, smoked etc at my own decision, despite the threat of small babies. My twins were 8.4 and 7.13 and my third was 10.7 oz.
There was only Miriam Stoppard who knew it all - and she never brought up her own kids anyway - she had nannies.

That's my high horse that makes me see red.

Afternoon everybody.

Cathie, yep Uncle Red got a nice blue rosette (first red, second blue, third yellow, fourth green, and so its goes down to 6th) points are awarded ie 7 for 1st, 6 for 2nd, 5 for 3rd etc etc, until September when the person with the most overall points in each class gets a trophy. Its all kept very complicated in order to confuse us, and stop us querying the judges decision.

I scoffed and drank more or less what I wanted when pregnant, had a ceasarian (cant spell) and then bottle fed Tim, so according to the 'experts' he had absolutely no chance of making it past his first 12 months. He's now a strapping 6ft 16 year old who swims, rides, windsurfs, ordinary surfs, sails and plays rugby. All that and a veggie too! Poor kid - he's so neglected!

Glad you enjoyed Chelsea, Ross, have you come back with lots of ideas for your garden.

Pouring and hailstones in Worcestershire, has been since Saturday night!

Sorry to do this but here is a message about Scrump

It's pretty devastating news from Alan Hewson:

It is with a very heavy heart that I have to tell you my wonderful friend Paul Gunningham (Scrump) died from a heart attack at 8.30 this morning.

We don't know why this happened. Paul brought a lot of pleasure to everyone who knew him. He was a kind and gentle man, modest, witty and widely talented. I will miss him more than I can say.

There will be a post mortem. I will let you know what the funeral arrangements will be in due course.

Yours

Alan Hewson
