Subject: Lyr Add: Pasquale, The Italian Pussycat From: GUEST,Tommaso Andrea Date: 18 May 07 - 08:15 AM Here is my attempt at providing the lyrics for Lou Monte's 'Pasquale, The Italian Pussycat' considered by some to be the sequel song to 'Peppino, The Italian Mouse': Peppin c'u Pasquale chell t(i)en na cap fresc(a) M' strazzn i gazzett e jettn' i scarp da finestr A sera in da cucin chell fann nu banchett Nun fann cerimonie mang lass' na pulpett Peppin u suricill ma pecche' nun te ne vajh? E pporta ta Pasqual(e) chell' e' propr n'atu guajh A ssera 'ngoppo lijtt voj durmit da bell da bell E iu senz'a cupert agja' durmi abbasciu sell Peppin a du sta u baccala'? Peppin u sulicill sa mbarat u mandulin Pasqual u gatterill chell(e) sohn u violin A sser' quann e' tard chell(e) fann a serenad M' par(e) due cumpar Cric e Croc e Mangiafran! _______________ Peppino and Pasquale are refreshed They tear up my socks and throw my shoes out the window At night they have a banquet in the kitchen They don't stand on ceremony - they left a meatball Peppino the Mouse - why don't you go away!? And bring Pasquale with you - he's just turned out to be another woe At night you (guys) are sleeping soundly in bed And I'm already down here in the basement sleeping without a blanket Peppino the Mouse is learning how to play the mandolin Pasquale the Cat is playing the violin At night when it's late they play a serenade They seem like two buddies to me: Cric and Croc and Mangiafran! __________________ Notes: Tien na cap fresc= tengono il capo fresco= they have 'fresh heads' (and are ready to make trouble for Lou!) Cazett=calzette=socks Jettn=gettano=they throw Chell' e propr n'atu guajh=quello(Pasquale) e' proprio un altro guaio=that one(Pasquale) is just another woe or trouble 'Ngoppo lijtt=sul letto=on the bed Abbasciu sell=abbasso= down below; however more likely it is the combination of basement and cellar (basciament(u) e sello) - an Italian-Americanism Cric e Croc e Mangiafran=Calabrian equivalent 'The Three Stooges'. Mangiafran means 'straw-eater'. I grew up Marchegian with 'Crichetti, Crocchetti, e Tarababassi' which appear to be similar characters. I look forward to your comments and hope this e-mail thread helps you to understand and sing along with Lou Monte. Tom |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Pepino's Friend Pasqual, Italian Pussycat From: GUEST,Robert Date: 03 May 08 - 01:29 AM Here's my take on that Tom (I am a Lucano-American, I believe that he is singing in Cosentino which is very close to what we speak): Peppinə cu Pasqualə chellə tienenə a cap frescə Mə strazzə ni gazzettə e jettnə i scarp da finestrə A sera in da cucinə chellə fannə nu banchettə Nun fannə cerimonie, mangə lassə na purpettə Peppinə u suricillə ma pecche' nun tə nə vajə? E pporta ta Pasqualə chellə e propriə natu guajə A ssera 'ngoppo lijttə vujə durmitə bella bellə E iə senzə a cupertə aggia' dormi abbasciə u sellə Ej, Peppinə, a du sta u baccala? Ej, Luigə, Pasquale vuolə antique baccala Peppinə u suriciellə ssa 'mbaratə u mandulinə Pasqualə u gatterillə chellə sono u violinə A sserə quannə e tardə chellə fannə a serenadə Mə para dujə cumparə Cric e Croc e Mangiafran! Notes - I agree with everything except for "abbasciə u sellə." It's not an Italian-Americanism, and in the south abbasciə is used quite often in this manner. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Pepino's Friend Pasqual, Italian Pussycat From: GUEST Date: 09 Feb 10 - 07:20 AM Here are the English lyrics of Pepino's Friend Pasqual(as far as I can consume.) Pepino, and just a little buddy, Pasqual, the Italian Pussycat. Pasquale, say hello for me. Buon Giorno! Pepino, oh you crazy mouse why can't you let me be? I sent that cat to chase you, now you've got him chasing me! And when I try to sleep at night I can't get any rest. Pasqual comes and licks my face while you dance on my chest. I said Pasquale listen now, please help me catch that mouse! My girlfriend's so afraid of him she won't come in the house! But when I turn my back he steals the meatballs from the tray And now that cat and mouse are playing gauche-ball all day! Pepino, oh you crazy mouse why can't you let me be? I sent that cat to chase you, now you've got him chasing me! He's putting holes in all the floors and scratching up the walls He's chasing all the neighbors down the stairs and through the halls! Eurizi! Now what do you want? We want to take your picture. Oh! Like in Hollywood! Pasquale: Stand against the wall. Pepino: You ready? Lou: Go ahead! Shoot! (It turns out to be guns to shoot Lou, similar to one of Wile E. Coyote's attempts to catch the Road Runner in "Hot Rod and Reel"(1959). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Pepino's Friend Pasqual (from Lou Monte) From: GUEST Date: 01 Jan 11 - 06:13 PM I am interested in what the lines of Pepino, Pasqual, and Lou are that we hear right after: Pepino, oh you crazy mouse why can't you let me be? I sent that cat to chase you, now you've got him chasing me! He's putting holes in all the floors and scratching up the walls He's chasing all the neighbors down the stairs and through the halls! (After these lines we hear some dialogue between Pepino, Pasqual, and Lou. If anybody can tell me what they are saying, I would greatly appreciate it! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Pepino's Friend Pasqual (from Lou Monte) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Jan 11 - 07:35 PM You can hear Lou Monte singing PEPINO'S FRIEND PASQUAL at YouTube.. I'm pretty sure that's "bocce ball" not "gauche-ball." Of course "bocce ball" is a bilingual redundancy. "Bocce" is the plural of "boccia," the Italian word for "ball." The game should be called simply "bocce," but I have heard Americans, maybe even Italian-Americans, call it "bocce ball." "Bocce" is pronounced "botchy." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Pepino's Friend Pasqual (from Lou Monte) From: GUEST Date: 16 Apr 11 - 12:45 PM It is "Bocce Ball", it's an Italian form of bowling. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Pepino's Friend Pasqual (from Lou Monte) From: GUEST,GUEST Date: 10 Jan 14 - 12:11 AM "Eurizi!" Since Pepino is talking to Lou Monte, that should probably be "Luigi". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Pepino's Friend Pasqual (from Lou Monte) From: GUEST,Anthony Date: 09 Feb 18 - 08:27 PM The youtube version distinctly has a dialogue with Italian American mixture from Lou immediately after the "shooting." Anyone have any ideas in what he says? |
