Look into banjos by Wayne Sagmoen. Google Wayne Sagmoen banjo and you'll find some posts in forums like the banjo hangout, sugar in the gourd, etc.

This is a golden age for banjo buyers.

So many options.

The standard response to a thread of this type is usually of the form "I have an x and I love it. So will you."

General advice.

Play as many banjos as you can. Decide what you want to hear.

When you hear what you want to hear and the price is right. Buy that one. That's how I did it.

Russ (Permanent GUEST and long time banjo player)

I am a fan of the Bart Reiter banjos as well as the Ome/Ode banjos.
There are some very good products coming from China. I am conflicted as to their purchase. I's rather buy equipment made in my own neck of the woods rather than increase the trade imbalance. But good quality and a resonable price are hard to beat.

One could say, "Just say no." But one wouldn't. Take along a banjo player, ask him to play it and follow his advice.

I've been admiring the Romero for some time. While I'm very happy with my Ramsey Fairbanks Electric, I have to admit I'd love a Romero - but I say that only having heard, not played them.

The Romero also have the advantage of being the best looking banjos I've ever seen.

You can see and hear them here.

This is not a commercial. (As I said, I love my Ramsey....)

Tha waiting lists are not a bad indication - Romero's is about 6 months according to his website. Debby McClatchy just got her new Kevin Enoch after waiting over 4 years, although I suppose Romero's still a fairly recent maker. They look good, but website recordings are not a good way to judge the sound - you've got to play one.
See you at Sacrewell, John.

Make sure you play the Vega 'Little Wonder.' I sat and played
for a long time at Mandolin Bros. and kept coming back to the
Little Wonder (over Bart Reiters and especially the Recording
King) for playability and sweet all-around sound. No tone-ring,
which put me off at first and almost kept me from trying it.

Play as many as you can and if that fails to produce the sort of sound & feel you want then, like me, have a go at making your own banjo. I currently have a collection? of about 20 which range from an early Grimshaw to a modern Gold Tone long neck and most stages in between. My favourite is the one I made from its & pieces. Takes a bit of trial & error but well worth it
Good hunting

Whatever you get - give it a name that suits its personality.

You know like Davy Crockett did with his rifle - Old Betsy.I was saying to my wife - all my guitars have got their own personality and I couldn't just throw them out.

She said perhaps I should give them names, and I think she has a point.

Here's another link to the Romaro banjo website: Click here for website

The above link didn't work for me.

I'm not familiar with these banjo's but they certainly look interesting.

I'm addicted, however, to the classic S. S. Stewart banjos.

Depends on what you like, what you can afford, and your experience in evaluating quality workmanship.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
