Subject: For those who read dots From: katlaughing Date: 19 May 07 - 01:13 AM I did a super search and didn't find this website listed, so...enjoy the Breizh Partitions "the free Celtic sheet music website." |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: treewind Date: 19 May 07 - 05:54 AM Very nice, though the first time I've seen Bulgarian music categorised as "Celtic" Anahata |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: Geoff the Duck Date: 19 May 07 - 06:22 AM Looks worth checking out. It might get me kick started with the bombarde again. Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: Geoff the Duck Date: 19 May 07 - 06:43 AM Just tried to visit the site so I can bookmark it in Firefox. I got the following message :- Fatal error : impossible to connect to the database server. I REALLY do think that computer programmers ought to get their life and priorities in order. I sincerely doubt that the web owner has been killed as a result of me attempting to read the page. I still appear to be physically unharmed from having visited the web site. Who has the process been deadly to? Blowed if I know! Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: greg stephens Date: 19 May 07 - 06:47 AM Anahata: Celticdom (Celtonia?) expands and contracts according to current fashion. Bit like the Sliabh Luacra is reported to, onl more so. Bulgaria seems less surprising than some: weren't the Galatians near there somewhere in St Paul times? They were presumably Celtic(ish), judging by the name. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: GUEST Date: 19 May 07 - 06:57 AM I was going to comment that at least English music hadn't been shoved under the Celtic umbrella until I noticed that the No 1 download was Amazing Grace, author John Newton. True, the tune is pentatonic so it just might have had Gaelic origins . . . or Japanese. As for Bulgaria being a bit Celtic, I think the kilt was invented thereabouts. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: The Borchester Echo Date: 19 May 07 - 06:59 AM Sorry, that was me. Just been doing a total reinstall (again) and got logged out. Grrrrrrrrr. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 19 May 07 - 07:04 AM Greg, Could it be that you're thinking of the Thracians? They were, of course, Celts - as were the Illyrians, Bulgars, Avars, Byzantines, Macedonians, Serbs, Albanians and Turks - oh yes, and Tsar Simeon I's great uncle Percy (or great uncle O'Percy as he was sometimes known). I hope that this information will prove useful when it comes to selling records ... |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: katlaughing Date: 19 May 07 - 04:28 PM GtD, lots of fatalities on the cyber highway! Here's the addy: http://breizhpartitions.free.fr/en/index.php |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: Rapparee Date: 19 May 07 - 10:33 PM Nah, the Galatians were Celtic. What suprised me was the Vietnamese music -- granted it was performed on pennywhistle, etc., but the last I knew Hanoi (listed as the source) wasn't Celtic...yet. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: katlaughing Date: 20 May 07 - 12:08 AM Well "Etienne" does ask for folks to contact him if they notice a mistake in his English. Maybe he is confused as to what "Celtic" means or it has a broader definition in his region. With the effort he has obviously put into the collection of songs, I don't think it hurts to give him the benefit of the doubt. I just thought it was a good resource and really don't care what he calls it, personally. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 20 May 07 - 01:53 AM If it can be played in elevators, it is "Modern-Celtic". |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: Jack Campin Date: 20 May 07 - 06:34 AM There was one item on the page listed as "World" - with a "world" flag, even. When they're going for world domination, whether Bulgaria is included is a minor detail. How widely used is that two-row melodeon tab with the "accordeon" tunes? |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: GUEST Date: 20 May 07 - 07:44 AM There is also a token tune listed as English (Greensleeves), so there you are, England is Celtic too. And as the theme from Titanic is included under "world", it looks as if the whole world is Celtic, which makes categorisation much more simple. Seriously, it's a useful site, so thanks for the link, Kat. Some of the tunes have links to midi files, so non-dot-readers may find something of interest too. Marje |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: katlaughing Date: 20 May 07 - 11:02 AM Thanks, Marje. I understand the ridicule re "Celtic" but I don't think folks should make so much fun of that OR his spelling, as it is obvious English is NOT his first language, in fact the forum seems to be mostly in French. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 May 07 - 12:24 AM I agree, kat. He's doing the world a service, and all some people want to do is nitpick and criticize. There are a lot of people who would rather quibble about music than go to the effort of making music. (I already had the site on my Favorites as a good one.) Geoff; thanks for the chuckle over Fatal Errors. It does seem like an overblown term. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: GUEST,Val Date: 21 May 07 - 01:18 PM Caveat - this site is apparently more than a little vague on sources. For example "Flower of Scotland" is listed as "Traditional", and I noticed the Shaker tune "Simple Gifts" is lumped in the Scottish category (perhaps because someone arranged it for bagpipes, therefore it MUST be Scottish?) This is NOT a good site if you want accurate info on where a tune came from or whether it is covered by copyright. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: The Borchester Echo Date: 21 May 07 - 01:24 PM Yes, the site does include good tunes but it is unbelievably crap on attribution and sources. Reminds me a bit of 'the session' where just about everything is listed as Trad/Irish. This is laziness at best and theft at worst. |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 22 May 07 - 01:39 AM He wants feedback. Give it to him. :-) |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: GUEST,Murray on Saltspring Date: 22 May 07 - 03:01 PM I've tried the clicky and got the fatal error message. Then I pasted in the url from Kat - another fatal error. What's up? |
Subject: RE: For those who read dots From: katlaughing Date: 22 May 07 - 03:24 PM Works okay for me, Murray. Maybe you have some kind of blocker on or something that needs to be ticked? Yes, please do give him feedback, but also please recognise, he may be a beginner and needs to be shown, gently, the error of his ways. I just thought it was a good site for the sheet music for a bunch of tunes. |
