Whale Oil Beef Hooked! A friend played this at a party just a few nights ago. I'd never heard it before and I loved it. I made a mental note to search the 'Cat for the words, but I guess it should've been a paper note 'cause the mental one got lost. So here it just appears like one of those mushrooms that just pops up in your yard overnight. Amazing!

The words jogged my memory and the chords started coming back to mind. I modified the words a bit to match what I'd learned in the 60's while serving in the Navy with an officer who said he played this while a member of The Back Porch Majority.

I used to sing this with a band called the Greasy Greens and here are a few modifications we used.

Just looked at this thread - reminded me of an old 78rpm that died a stepped on death on a drunken W1 night in 66 or 67 - but the lyric started " There are blues that make you happy......". As I remember the band (jug) was pre-WWW2. Any clues ??

Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band is a part of the personal history of a lot of people my age. They used to do courtyard concerts and dances at our university when I was there in the early '70's. I also remember their May Day dances at the town hall. Brothers Mic and Jim Conway co-founded the band. They were all brilliant. High energy, clever musicians, funny, creative. Memorable.

(May Day is a workers' day celebrating the introduction of the 8 hour day but in NSW we have the Labour Day public holiday in early October.)
