Subject: zimmers From: guitar Date: 29 May 07 - 11:34 AM I was watching a programme last night on BBC2 and it was about the elderly here in Britian and what the rest of socity is doing to them, if you go to youtube and key in Zimmers you'll find them there, with their song 'my genartion' the who auld song, the lead singer is 90 and the oldest is 100 and he's still working and their ages all together come to 3,000 years. Who says that you're too old to have a record out. Tom |

Subject: RE: zimmers From: Rog Peek Date: 29 May 07 - 11:55 AM A great program by the BBC, it's what they do best. The fellow at the end in the hat with his finger defiantly raised is the 100 year old who's still working! .....and yes, that is the zebra crossing in Abbey Road! |
Subject: RE: zimmers From: Folkiedave Date: 29 May 07 - 11:55 AM They are still trying to get their money off Dave Bulmer - that's why they have lived so long...... |
Subject: RE: zimmers From: George Papavgeris Date: 29 May 07 - 12:01 PM Lovely programme. I will never forget the terror in the eyes of the old lady who had only been in a care home for two months and clearly hated her life. But a very positive outcome to the programme and the whole project. Now, please tell me: Is it me, or did Alfie (the centagenarian with the hat and beard giving the finger to the camera) look remarkably like our own Leadfingers? |
Subject: RE: zimmers From: Surreysinger Date: 29 May 07 - 12:26 PM What I really enjoyed was hearing the lead singer give his thoughts on singing in the same studios as the Beatles had....and, although I'd seen the video several times begore on YouTube, I would never have guessed that he was 90! Apart from the whole message of the programme, the thing that came over on watching them singing was the pure joie de vivre in performance that they displayed - just hope that I can be that sparky when I get to that age!! |
Subject: RE: zimmers From: Bill D Date: 29 May 07 - 09:06 PM I spent some time today in Google trying to figure out why the appliance is called a 'Zimmer'. I saw lots of cartoons and references, but no clear answer. Is that just a UK brand name that has stuck? |
Subject: RE: zimmers From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 29 May 07 - 09:11 PM "zimmer" is the German for "room" - so a zimmerframe because it is to help you get around indoors if you are a bit too unsteady. |
Subject: RE: zimmers From: guitar Date: 30 May 07 - 04:46 AM It's a metal frame that the elderly use to help them walk, as I said in America you call them Walkers I tihnk over here they're called Zimmerframes or Zimmers for short |
Subject: RE: zimmers From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 30 May 07 - 04:50 AM Thread creep. When I first joined the Mudcat I called myself 'Roger the Zimmer' because a friend had thanked me for providing some Elvis lyrics by calling me The Pelvis and another "friend" had said "More like 'The Zimmer'". As it confused our transatlantic 'Catters, I changed my Mudcat name to the one Ralphie finds so silly to distinguish myself from all the other Mudcat Rogers and as my only musical accomplishment is the washboard & kazoo. Subject: RE: zimmers From: redsnapper Date: 30 May 07 - 05:02 AM It's called a "zimmer" because a large number of them were made by the Zimmer orthopaedics company. RS |
Subject: RE: zimmers From: Bill D Date: 30 May 07 - 10:43 AM ahhh...thank you! That is what I suspected. "Walker" is more of a generic, descriptive term. (when I worked in grocery stores many years ago, I was told to get a "Listo" to mark certain items.....it turned out to be one brand name for a 'grease pencil'...a black marker like a very dense, black lipstick.) |
Subject: RE: zimmers From: Tim theTwangler Date: 30 May 07 - 12:15 PM IS it cheaper than actual black lipstick? |
Subject: RE: zimmers From: Bill D Date: 31 May 07 - 10:50 AM ummmmmm....probably. (of COURSE there'd be actual black lipstick now....but I don't think there was 40 years ago.) |
