Hi,

Just to remind people that it is still there

Mudcat chat room

Check in on the hour and see wait for a few minutes.. someone else might appear......... I know things are a bit odd at the moment seeing as everyone's clocks have gone backwards or forwards so it may take a while to get back in sync with each other......... but let's keep trying......

The link above will take you to a page with your details on it... it can take a while to load... be patient... then click on the small "enter" button .. and it will take you to the actual chat......

Slainte

PS I'll keep refreshing this every so often just to remind us...........

I'm no expert on computers.... any technical questions should go to the Mudcat Help Forum (there's a link at the top of the page.)... someone more knowledgable will be able to sort you out.

I never was able to use it, only got error messages. This one now is the best I ever got:
IRC got a security violation: method verification error.
Should I through away my stamp collection and start collecting chat room error messages ? ;-) [ or rather :-( ]

mmm good way to spend an eternity waiting for it to load only to be able to send messages to yourself... Are you supposed to have 2 people listed in the "audience" when you log on Alison? i.e. your name appears twice, once as the host and a normal entry?
All this time I've been knocking AOL's Instant Messenger and it's still the easiest to use.. oh well.. as they say, Rome wasn't built to an architect's plan...

Yes, you probably appear twice once as the host (usually if you're the first one in) and then as a participant.... I'll check next time I'm in.

I still prefer ICQ.

your'e up early Alison. The only problem I have with ICQ is getting locked up all the time and their technogeek language trying to explain their system. I am sure it's good (their chat method is the best to me) but they make it so hard to comprehend. thank God for point and click, I would have never survived the DOS era (nor my computer).

Hi tucker,

It's early evening in Oz..... I know ICQ seems hard... but I have given quite a few Mudcatters the "guided tour" .. and it really is very easy.. if a computer dummy like me can do it.. anyone can.

You are probably right Alison. maybe someone at ICQ will see this and take a creative writing course. I know their system is good but I know many who won't use it simply because it intimadates them. They are getting better but their home page still looks cluttered and too "busy". Simplify, Simplify, Simplify.

Hello Alison, Its Colin from Ballygalley (alais the Whistle Blower) sorry about the Hands Off thread on the pipes, it was'nt me. It was Big Pete from Larne (NI) who plays music with me. I think he fancied the pipes himself. I've tried the Chat Room and had better success chatting to Gold Fish with Fifteen pints of Guinnes dowm my throat on Friday nights.

Nothing technical but could you maybe give a few more pointers on how to get started.

PS..I here a rumour it was you who started Don Meixner on the Corries...Now listen..have a titter of wit..I've better things to do than start re-educating people on the in's and outs of good Folk/Traditional Music. The Corries makes our group 'SNOG THE ROCK' sound like the bloody Boyzone!!!!

I made it!!!! Finally got on the chat. I clicked on the link in one of the early messages and didn't get an error message. What a surprise.

I didn't use that client though. I took the information that www.mudcat.org is the host and 6667 is the port to use and then connected and joined the channel using mIRC.

So, it looks like you can connect both ways. jets was already online and showed as the operator of the channel (name showed as @jets). We chatted a bit then I had to leave to put the dinner on. Just came back and I'm there alone but at least I know I'm in the right place.

Hope this information is useful/encouraging to others who want to try this technology.

Chat seemed to go down and is back up now. I connected via the java client and mIRC. Then I talked to myself for a while.

I'll stich around a few minutes and see if anyone else joins at the top of the hour. (That was the agreement wasn't it?)

Hi everyone,

I'm in the chat room now talking to myself......... Here's a link to one of the ICQ threads with all the info... my advice is...... ignore the opening page... jsut find where it says to download ICQ. I never bother with the opening page ... as someone else said.. there's too much on it.

Threads about ICQ

It is easier to work out if someone shows you the ropes, so..... if you want me to help let me know you'll find my (and other Mudcatter numbers) on the other links. Meanwhile keep trying the Mudcat one.. it is good when it works..... and when someone else is there.

now, before you get confused.. the official mudcat chat room on ICQ (called @mudcat) referred to in the other threads, doesn't exist anymore.. due to a teensy weensy problem we had with a sex chat room **grin**.. so don't try that number.

Colin & Big Pete...... lovely to see some new people from home (I'm originally from Belfast if you haven't already picked that up)...... I was just thinking about your part of the world the other day.. and how much I'd love to jump in my car and go for a scoot up the coast road.....

How frustrating. I´m really not able to get into the chat. Are there problems with a firewall? Java is turned on on my machine but the applet refuses to get loaded.
Anyway, www.folkclub.com works. I´ll be there at the next full hour.

Well, that´s it. I´ve tried it. I showed myself willingly a couple of times. Have you heard it, all you people patiently waiting in the chat? I tried, I rattled the chat´s doors, I shouted, but my yells were absorbed by my firewall.
So, goodbye to the chat, goodbye to the last chance to have a little talk with all you folks out there. All my hopes are down the proxy´s drain.

Harald, distressed, in desperation and with tears in his eyes walking into the sunset to a land where no computers grow, where birds whistle jigs and little mudcats play the banjo.

D'Cats--

I've been trying to get into the chat room for 30 minutes...I tried first clicking on Alison's initial link, and got the cookie message. So I reset my cookie. I then got a java security violation, so I quit, and tried again using netscape instead of internet explorer. I got a different java error message that led me to believe the address was a problem. I went back to the mudcat homepage, and explicitly typed the address. I got yet another java error message...

What AM I doing wrong???

Hi all, working on some things. If you wanna check out a more live experience with the chat and cat try out http://www.mudcat.org/livecat.cfm. It's just the chat embedded in the page with a frameset. The bottom frame shows you almost realtime messages being posted and lets you browse. Just fidlin, no real progress other than that.

Hi Max,

What is supposed to happen in the lower part of the screen... the chat box at the top seems to be OK (I'm there on my own again)....... but the bottom half of the screen has a timeout error.

With the earlier version we were able to minimise it and keep it active while we surfed and it alerted us with the door bell when someone else came in.... this one doesn't allow me to do that, (unless I open a new IE window and leave it in there)........ also it tends to get sick of waiting for someone else to join and automatically disconnects itself....... is it just me?

If the float button allows us to minimise... how do we get back to the float button once we are in the chat window? Or do we have to go right out again?

hi again,

OK, just been playing with the float button, and it does minimise, but then when I go back to the threads and maximise it again........ I have been disconnected from the chat... if you "enter" again it seems to work and stay connected..... just a glitch?
