Subject: Sidmouth this year? From: sleepyjon Date: 20 Jun 07 - 12:46 PM After many years hearing about Sidmouth and especially the Middle Bar sessions I find myself at last in the country this year for what I thought would be the right dates - but my poor efforts at internet searching reveal nothing. Is it on? Is there one particular session in the Middle Bar that would be the one to aim for for someone who can only fit in a brief visit? |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: Cats Date: 20 Jun 07 - 12:51 PM Oh yes it's on. Make your way to the Anchor and you will find the middle Bar singers singing every lunchtime and evening. Bring a swimsuit for the sing in the sea. make your self known ~ you'll find plenty of 'Catters there. |

Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: Leadfingers Date: 20 Jun 07 - 02:21 PM As Cats said , The Middle Bar is twice a day every day , and there are other Sessions and Sings all over the place ! The Radway has The English Tune virtually all day , every day , The Bedford is usually HEAVING with musicians and singers , The Faulkner has a Singaround every evening , The Volounteer has mostly traditional stuff , The Swan has a mixed session all day , The New Tavern has another mixed session twice day - With allsorts of OverLap stuff in between ! There is a singaround in the Arts Centre every day , and a lot of the other pubs have informal stuff on and off |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: BB Date: 20 Jun 07 - 02:24 PM I'm sure Kitty will correct me if I'm wrong, but don't I remember an earlier thread saying that the Arts Centre lunchtime singarounds are off this year? Barbara |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: Herga Kitty Date: 20 Jun 07 - 03:18 PM The singarounds I ran with Tim Edwards were in the Theatre Bar of the Manor Pavilion, not the Arts Centre (which is downstairs}, and an official programmed event (though no ticket was required - we'd just put a tin round to collect for the festival). The Theatre Bar is being used for a songwriting workshop this year at 11am, so the morning singarounds have been relegated to the fringe, and shortened so as not to clash with the Anchor Middle Bar sing - Tim and I will be starting at 10.30 in the Faulkner Bar of the Royal York on the Esplanade. SJ - in case it helps you to decide when to visit, Tuesday night in the Anchor is generally shanties, to collect for the Sidmouth lifeboat rather than the festival, Wednesday is Dorset (sorry, Darzit) night, when Dorset is magically expanded to accommodate most of the universe, Thursday lunchtime is silly songs followed by swimming in the sea, and the Doom, Gloom and Despondency competition (sorry, workshop) in the Faulkner Bar afterwards. Do come and join us! Kitty |

Google Sidmouth Folk Festival and Wow man, far out... the wonders of modern science, it'll be in front of you!!! Come and get a lemonade in the Blackmore Gardens. Proove who you are, Mr Sleepyjon, and I'll give you a free cup of freshly squeezed lemonade. 8) Sal |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: Dave Masterson Date: 21 Jun 07 - 03:32 AM Haven't been to Sidmouth for over 20 years (Festival that is, we were in the Swan last Wednesday for a drink/catchup with Henry and Rosie Piper) - Do they still have the Ceilidh in the Ford? |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: GUEST,The Barden of England at work Date: 21 Jun 07 - 07:34 AM Don't you mean 'The Ceilidh that doesn't happen in the Ford'? It also doesn't happen on the last friday and doesn't have a scratch Ceilidh band. If it's that one then yes. John Barden |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: Dave Masterson Date: 21 Jun 07 - 08:10 AM Glad to hear it's still not happening! We have a photo at home of a very young Simon Care leading the scratch band. |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: Surreysinger Date: 21 Jun 07 - 09:28 AM What time does it normally not happen? I'm going back again this year, and always managed to miss it not happening in the last few years I went. |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: Kevin Sheils Date: 21 Jun 07 - 09:45 AM I was always confused about which day it wasn't happening. I'd be strolling back from the Volunteer via the Byes, as I did each day and imagine my surprise when I would get to the Ford and find it wasn't happening on the day I least expected it to not be happening. I think I'll have a lie down now. |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: MBSLynne Date: 21 Jun 07 - 10:08 AM I think it doesn't happen at about 3.00. Who remembers Marine Morris? The only remnant of that is MBS's parade to and into the sea singing shanties. It used to be a real laugh. I believe there was also a Marine Olympics one year. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 21 Jun 07 - 10:21 AM Back in the mists of my memory, I remember Paddingtons coming second in the Marine Morris. We won 14 pounds (Yes....a stone!) Glad we didn't come first....The Six Quid didn't look well at all. Maybe this year, we should revive the "Let's help Sid reach the sea" competition. On the other hand, maybe not. |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: sleepyjon Date: 21 Jun 07 - 10:42 AM What a rich seem I tapped there! - special thanks for the detailed stuff from Kitty and Leadfingers - and hey Sal (Ms Lemon) that's just what I did - or so I thought - but all I got was ancient stuff from yesteryear - so with the supreme confidence of the technically incompetent I did it again today just to be able to smugly show you that it didn't work, and guess what! - just as you said. Who can explain? - maybe the first time I nodded off in mid type. zzzzzz |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: Cats at Work Date: 21 Jun 07 - 10:45 AM Anyone remember the King John's Morris Christmas Dinner on the beach in full evening dress, white tablecloths, silver service, wine waiters etc? The tide had just come up to the waist by the port and brandy. |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: MBSLynne Date: 21 Jun 07 - 01:28 PM And the themed ceilidhs in the drill hall? The best one was "The Ceilidh at the End of the Universe" and prize for the best costume HAD to go to the triple breasted whore of eroticon 5. Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: Kevin Sheils Date: 21 Jun 07 - 01:58 PM Hi Simon You'd have been better off starting a new thread as your request will get lost in this Sidmouth one. Try posting again as a new thread, most people will understand, honest! See you at Walthamstow on Sunday. |

Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: GUEST,SIDFANNY Date: 21 Jun 07 - 07:05 PM Oh Gawd. I just can't wait. Are we there yet? Only 6 weeks to go. I must see the man with large braces again and have a full throttle sing on Hiroshima Day. There is literally nothing like it. XXXXX |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: GUEST,The Barden of England at work Date: 22 Jun 07 - 04:32 AM I thought it didn't happen at about 1pm, but I could be wrong. There might be a sign there during the week to say when it's not going to happen, but I'm sure most sessions will know when it's not going to happen. John Barden |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: GUEST,Gadaffi Date: 22 Jun 07 - 04:47 AM ... then there's the Loose Knit band who meet daily at the Yacht Club. Marine Morris? Most southerly fire-eater competition, anti-shanty action faction, best wet T-shirt (won by Severn Ironmen, who only had one shirt between the eight of them). |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth this year? From: Schantieman Date: 22 Jun 07 - 06:43 AM I remember the 'Underwater Ceilidh' in the Drill Hall (now sadly departed) once. We had the Oyster Ceilidh Band and danced Waves of Tory to the the of Dingle's Regatta, amongst others. I clearly remember someone dancing in sub-aqua gear, complete with flippers and the half-time 'entertainment' was a 'seafood race' in which I was persuaded - much against my better judgement - to take part!
