Subject: RE: I can't go back to savoury From: Bernard Date: 26 Jun 07 - 01:54 PM Remember 'Jilted John' by 'Jilted John'? It went something like: I've been going out with a girl Her name is Julie Then last night she said to me As we were watching telly. Listen John, I love you, But there's this bloke I fancy I don't want to two-time you, So it's the end for you and me! ...and so it goes on, culminating in the immortal line: Gordon is a moron, Gordon is a moron (etc.!) Well... Jilted John was John Shuttleworth, or rather, Graham Fellowes who plays both characters... |
Subject: RE: I can't go back to savoury From: Dave Roberts Date: 26 Jun 07 - 08:37 PM I'm sorry if you're one of those who can't see the joke, but Shuttleworth/Fellowes is a genius and that very rare thing, a unique performer. |
Subject: RE: I can't go back to savoury From: John MacKenzie Date: 27 Jun 07 - 03:17 AM Uniquely what Dave; bad? G |
Subject: RE: I can't go back to savoury From: Gedpipes Date: 27 Jun 07 - 01:16 PM ...ooooh John cut me ... Blue skies Ged |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: Ruth Archer Date: 28 Jun 07 - 10:26 AM Gedpipes, I think you'll find it's "She lives in Hope But she used to live in Barnsley..." Hope being a village in Derbyshire. See what he's done there? Great song. God, I love Shuttleworth. And don't tell anyone, but my 13 year old Goth Girl, who these days likes music to make your ears bleed, wrote him a fan letter when she was about 10! (She thinks I don't know...) |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: Dave Roberts Date: 28 Jun 07 - 10:40 AM I didn't use the word 'uniquely', I said 'unique'. I think that, whether you like him or not, Shuttleworth is a true original. |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttlewo From: John MacKenzie Date: 28 Jun 07 - 10:48 AM OK unique crap, how boring must a person be to have to hide his own persona under that of a really really boring and monotonous person. I hate people who pretend to be another person as a full time occupation, like Mrs Merton and Danny La Rue et all. Can't they be themselves and entertaining, why do they hide? Giok |

Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: Captain Ginger Date: 28 Jun 07 - 12:34 PM An acquired taste, I think. One that I haven't acquired - the Shuttleworth schtick makes me cringe. As does the 'Count Arthur Strong' character, and Milton Jones, and... Sorry, I think I need to go and buy some flowers to mark the death of British comedy. |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttlewo From: John MacKenzie Date: 28 Jun 07 - 01:01 PM I thought Count Arthur Strong was John Shuttleworth he was so bad, and sounds similar to my ears too. G |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttlewo From: tijuanatime Date: 28 Jun 07 - 01:26 PM When Coope Boyes & Simpson performed at Chester this year they finished their set with JS's 'Save the Whale' |

Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: Dave Roberts Date: 28 Jun 07 - 04:18 PM I think the humour of John Shuttleworth lies (or is supposed to lie, depending on whether you find him funny or not) on the contrast between his aspirations and his limited achievements. He's living a humdrum life in Sheffield but, in his mind, is a star. Still if that kind of thing don't float your boat what the hell? |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: GUEST,Geoff the Duck Date: 29 Jun 07 - 04:28 AM John Shuttleworth is one of those comic performances which, for me, works as a complete thing, but doesn't split into soundbite jokes. I've heard his radio spots over the years and enjoyed them but I wouldn't listen to his songs as a standalone piece of humour. For instance, with "Savoury", I fully understand the dilemma, I've been there myself, but the song is longer than the joke and for me would have worked better with fewer verses. I have no problem with a performance as a "character". I grew up listening to the Clitheroe Kid on the home service, thought Lily Savage was hilarious. Let's face it, who ever really knew what Tony Hancock really was. All we saw or heard was the character which looked and sounded like the man. John Shuttleworth can be poignant and the writing can be very clever, but never cruel, unlike what a lot of people sell as comedy. Quack! Geoff. |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: Michael Date: 29 Jun 07 - 04:30 AM As Gielgud (or similar) said "It's called acting, darling."(But that doesn't mean you have to like it) Mike |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: Cllr Date: 29 Jun 07 - 04:50 AM giok not liking charecter creation is your choice of course and a lot of comedy shows are built around this style alan partridge, whitehouse experience all rely on this, some are classic, dame edna everage is a similar creation (average housewife superstar) but on the folk scene we have our own... what about Sid Kipper.? |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: Gedpipes Date: 29 Jun 07 - 05:33 AM Sorry Ruth (dear!) I continually live in hope Blue skies Ged |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: Ruth Archer Date: 29 Jun 07 - 06:12 AM I remember tears actually stinging my eyes once during Dandelion and Burdock (At the Crich Tram Museum). Okay, laugh. But I think the genius of the character is that he is incredibly sympathetic while being hilarious at the same time. You may be laughing at him, but you're always on his side. We always had deep affection for John in Casa Crumpet. |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: GUEST,Ted in a shed Date: 29 Jun 07 - 06:13 AM I have always found him to be hugely tittersome as well. |

Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: Dave Roberts Date: 29 Jun 07 - 07:11 AM I don't see any point in arguing (other than it's just great fun). I've said it before and I'll....etc.... If someone does not find something or someone amusing, no amount of persuasion or argument is going to alter the situation. I have a friend who finds Little and Large hilariously funny. Now, I ask you.... |

Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttleworth) From: Bernard Date: 29 Jun 07 - 07:22 AM I'm more worried by people who don't like something and suggest that others should not like it either. One man's meat... Deriding someone who is obviously successful at what they are doing is often borne out of jealousy. Humour is a very personal thing, and being told that something isn't funny when you find it hilarious... what is that about?!! |
Subject: RE: YouTube: I Can't Go Back to Savoury (Shuttlewo From: John MacKenzie Date: 29 Jun 07 - 07:32 AM It's like smoking it's a personal choice, and though I don't any longer smoke, I don't go round proselytising actively a non smoking agenda. G Still don't find John Shuttleworth remotely funny, and it seems like he's never off Loose Ends on Radio4, I'm afraid I turn the radio off the minute I hear him being introduced. To each his own though. G. |
