He's tuning the drones with an electronic tuner... but I like your conclusion better!

I thought it might be that, but couldn't figure out what he was using to tune with! Thanks, Barry and thanks, gnu, for posting this. I LOVE pipe bands!

So was the shorter guy the official "beat" keeper? I noticed he kept moving round the circle and his foot seemed to be the only one keeping time.

Probably the Pipe Major - the guy who decides what they are going to play,and sets the tempo for the tune !

You're right on, Leadfingers! He's "da man"!

Notice how the Pipe Major wanders around the circle to play alongside the other pipers. He's checking the standard of playing in the very last moments before the band plays before the judges.

At one point he pats one on the back and that piper is seen to leave the circle. That's a sign that the piper is being directed to sit out for the imminent competition (a devastating feeling, believe me).

Nevertheless, this is how good bands become great bands... and this is one of the latter.

When I was playing in aPipe and Tumpet Band ( A LONG time ago) we didnt do the competition thing , but we DID do a lot of display stuff !
