Mick, thanks so much. I had a friend in college who used to sing the title line quite often, but never more than that. I heard no more of it until following your link to the Larry Vincent clip. Call me obtuse, but the straight reading of that line never occurred to me before. What's the emoticon for {lightbulb flickers on}?

Artful - I debated (with myself) about the first line (for a few seconds), but decided that any other possible readings/spellings and locations of commas must be in the ear of the listener!

Correction, verse 4 (not counting the intro), line 4:

"She necks the wrecks and gets a cheque." [or "check"]

I would change it to, "She's got freckles on her and she's nice."
The word "but|" indicates that freckles are a negative quality.

About 42 years ago I borrowed a 1926 (or 36?) "platter" of this by the Airline Trio and recorded it on cassette. About 20 years after that, I was working with an exceptionally freckly woman, and happened to remember the song. I gave her a copy and told her "listen to this, it's a prophecy about you from 1926 ". However, I never surveyed the total possible coverage of the lady's freckles.
