Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Vin2 Date: 06 Aug 07 - 08:22 AM Cheers Ali. I'll send a reminder nearer the time - large may be ok - i'll have to cut down on the 'points' :-). Oh and i have a slight criticism about the festival cd - you're not on it! Why it's an outrage!! You're gonna have to put out a single for the 11th to make up for it. Maybe a live recording duet with Geoff with a backing chorus of the 'survivors night' crowd - now that would be something to 'roll home' to eh? |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 04 Aug 07 - 06:51 PM And it should have read "point", not "pint" - I've only been on wine tonight!! Ali |

Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 28 Jul 07 - 07:08 PM Thanks again folks - I've been in Wales for a cpuple of days with my grandchildren so I'm really chilled now! (I mean destressed of course - not cold!!) We're not sure what went wrong with the concert on Saturday - I know Dave (the MC) was really trying to do a good job. Anyway, it didn't seem to detract from everyone's enjoyment - a lot of people are saying that it's the best lineup they'd ever seen - not bad for a small-ish festival!! I was so emotional watching the artists and hearing the audience sing. Wonderful! As was the singing in the Survivors Session in Greenfield. Ali x |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: r.padgett Date: 27 Jul 07 - 02:06 AM Next year will be dahn t'committee as to who is invited no doubt and I do hope to be there god willing!alongside the team Love to do a bit more and Yorkshire Garland Web site should be well up and running by then too Bruce thanks for your input and like to see/hear more of yer singing, probably Cleckie if not before and then Saddleworth 11th Cheers Ray |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: GUEST,Bruce Michael Baillie Date: 27 Jul 07 - 01:11 AM Thanks for the nice comments Ray! An enjoyable time was had, I suppose Lancashire have to win sometimes, at least we showed them how to be gentlemen in defeat. A very good contest, and an enjoyable festival. Thanks to Malcolm & Janet Hodgson for tea in their caravan! and thanks to the organisers for organising. And Ray if you need another contestant for next year you know where I am! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: folk1e Date: 26 Jul 07 - 03:43 PM Well done one all! Once again we were impressed by the standard of Artists, Organisers and Punters. Nice to see the Yorkists magnanimous in defeat despite all! Is it worth mentioning the drought we had on sunday morning? See you all next time! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Baggins 360 Date: 25 Jul 07 - 05:22 PM My apologies Siobhan I wasn't blaming you (the Artists) it was just that Bill and Dave seemed to be the only ones cut short and they were brilliant. I thought the whole evening was great, with the possible exception of "im in the suit." I must add by the way, that the audience singing was aided greatly by me keeping my gob shut! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: SiobhanN Date: 25 Jul 07 - 04:49 PM Hi Great festival!!! Just thought we'd better mention, in response to the previous posting, that the first few acts on Saturday night didn't overrun... what happened was that some acts later in the concert were cut short for some reason, even though everything had been running ahead of time (according to the artists' schedule, anyway) until then! We were the first act on, and the set we played was exactly the length it was supposed to be. We were amazed, and very disappointed, when Bill Whaley and and Dave Fletcher didn't get their allotted time... weren't they brilliant, though! ..and we agree, the audience were great! Chris & Siobhan Nelson |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Baggins 360 Date: 25 Jul 07 - 03:45 PM Saddleworth Civic Hall Saturday night The real Stars, were the audience their singing was abso-bloody-lutely brilliant, spine tingling even. A couple of gripes The MC (who shall remain nameless) was pathetic he let the first two/three acts run over so we we ended up with just FOUR songs from Bill Whaley and and Dave Fletcher! Mind you they were four wonderful songs. He did however have the bottle to tell the Wilsons they were loosing a song! OK pathetic, but brave. These small niggles however never spoiled what is without doubt one of the friendliest Folk Festivals around. Well done Saddleworth AND we won the war of the roses.....Let my joy be unconfined |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 25 Jul 07 - 01:29 PM I'm still getting emotional, reading all these wonderful messages! Ali |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: LesB Date: 25 Jul 07 - 01:09 PM It was my first time camping at Saddleworth (I normaly come just for the day, but there were too many good acts on to miss any). The running track was a godsend but the least said about the toilets the better. Weather not withstanding we had a great time. With such a great line up I rarely left the main concert hall, except to go to a couple of "meet the artist" & a couple of workshops. (My friends Chris & Siobhan Nelson doing "Appalation Clogging & "Home Recording" respectivly). Everybody on Sat was really good & it was terrific to see The New Scorpion Band on Sun. Unfortunately the program didn't allow me to get to see Hissyfit this year. Looking forward to next year. Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Vin2 Date: 25 Jul 07 - 10:43 AM Ditto also everything that's said above. The tenth (my ninth - so i can celebrate agin next year!) was really fab. Was a bit tentative this year as me mate Jim, who normally came along sadly died in an accident recently but the atmosphere and friendliness of the festival helped tremendously. Sat'day night in the Civic was amazing; after each guest spot you kinda thought, 'wow, follow that' but each act was truly brill climaxing with the fab Waterson / Carthy even without the great Norma (hope you're feeling lots better). The survivors night as Linda said, was tremendous; what an end standing up and joining hands 'as we went rolling home'. I think the only criticism i heard was that the early acts on Sat eve didn't have long enough which to me shows the quality on show, such that people didn't want to let em go. Great tribute to the organisers! Well done and thanks very much Ali for a smashing time (sure we'll see you around next year) and all the committee for the hard slog througout the year. Saddleworth 2007 - fabulous music, fabulous people = fabulous festiva!! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 25 Jul 07 - 10:43 AM Did you mean to say anything Guest? Thanks for all the lovely messages folks - I've added them all to the evaluations. And I'm doing my "thank you" cards this weekend! Ali |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: treaties1 Date: 24 Jul 07 - 08:01 AM Logging on in the local library, trouble with computer at home. Great festival had a super time and thanks to all friends for help with the Alphabet and Sunday Sing. Thanks for all the hard work of Alio and Geoff and all the committee your efforts were not in vain they were tremendous and everyone found something to enjoy at Saddleworth. As Alio said she wanted a singers festival and that is what we all got Thanks and lots of love Theresa |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: muppitz Date: 24 Jul 07 - 07:56 AM After drying out on Friday, I had a great time! Saw what I wanted to, did a little bit of singing, worked a fair bit too! Sunday was a nice enough day, however the rain waited until we were taking the marquee down to fall so we didn't have anything to hide under! Typical! I'm surprised no one's mentioned anything about us running out of beer! I'll shut up now! muppitz x |

Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: MoorleyMan Date: 23 Jul 07 - 06:46 PM Wow indeed. What a wonderful - and yes, very emotional - weekend. My only regret was having to leave the Survivors' session early due to a domestic commitment. O Alio, you will be the hardest of acts to follow!..... Cheers! MM |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: GUEST,old git Date: 23 Jul 07 - 06:42 PM I had a great weekend too. Thanks Ali and all the rest..especially my mate Geoff. Thanks to everybody who made the singarounds in the Uppermill Cons club so good... Yes Ray I agree...Hissyfit get better every time I hear them...and they always manage to bring a lump to my throat with Sweet Minerva. Sorry I had to miss the survivors session but had to be elsewhere. here's to the next one! geoff turner |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 23 Jul 07 - 06:22 PM No - don't !! We wuzz robbed!!! Geoff has asked me to post a message here to all those who camped on Churchill, to say a big thank you to you all - thanks for listening to him and the stewards re parking so that everyone could get off pretty easily - and thanks for leaving the whole area so clean and tidy that no one could possibly tell you'd been there!! Amazing! He's really grateful to you all. Ali x |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Linda Kelly Date: 23 Jul 07 - 04:38 PM the best yet-especially the wonderful last night. My woefully inadequate footwear which was rescued by Col K (my hero) from the mudbath, have been consigned to the bin -the trench foot is healing nicely but i think the tent is terminal. Alio, this year was spectacular Wilsons-wow! wonderful sets from Bill W and Dave F and Jez -only sorry I couldn't catch more and the singing in concerts in pub on the campsite -well it was mighty! Will see you soon Ali and thanks to Geoff who was a treasure. We won't mention the War! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Pistachio Date: 23 Jul 07 - 03:30 PM Safe home - thanks for the tow Geoff, and the offers from everyone who noticed my motorhome was stuck in the mud! Fortunately it didn't sink further as the weekend progressed. Linda was not so lucky. The rain didn't dampen spirits - it just left a tide mark on everything! Wellies are wonderful... So are disposable gloves! (They save ruining a good manicure when pulling up tent pegs) What a wonderful weekend we had. Thanks Paddleworth! The lovely comments above are very kind. Linda and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We didn't win the war but we enjoyed the battle. Good to hear Bruce's clever monologues, I'll have to wait to hear him sing. It was great to hear Dave F and Bill W at their 'extended' session in the Commercial on Sunday(!!) and the Wilsons were 'new' to me. Wow,how many different harmonies? Thanks Ali, for asking us to sing and for guiding us to Greenfield last night. It was brill. I loved it when Pete (Shellback) sang his Pirate song and cried with laughter at his variation of Gaudete! Impeccable timing. I sang myself hoarse with all the choruses but that's not a complaint. It was an amazing night with a room full of happy voices. It was a great privilege to share a weekend that's so special. I'm tired. I need to rest mind and voice. Great to put 'mudcat' names to faces and catch up with everyone again. H x.x.x Goodnight. |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: SiobhanN Date: 23 Jul 07 - 01:13 PM Chris & I had a great time at the festival - it's the first time we've been, and we hope it won't be the last! Thanks, Ali, and to everyone else who made it such a great weekend! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 23 Jul 07 - 01:03 PM What can I say to everyone who came to Saddleworth? It was such an emotional weekend - I was in tears most of the time! I wanted it to be a huge singers festival, and it certainly was. The Wilsons told me on Sunday morning that they've never known a concert as easy as the one in the Civic on Saturday night - they only had to sing a couple of words, and every time this wall of sound came back at them! Ray - thank you so much for your lovely words to me at the Survivors Session. And what a wonderful session it was! It took nearly 3 1/2 hours to get through all the singers. The Greenfield locals couldn't believe it! Rolling Home was just amazing, wasn't it? So thank you to you all - artists, stewards, friends, festival goers. You're all just wonderful! I know the festival will carry on from strength to strength with the people who come every year - many of this year's Saddleworth "virgins" have said that they're coming back again. (Yes, we still have them over here!!) I jjust wish I'd seen Mr Happy and Linda (Hissyfit) get stuck in the mud - that would have just made my weekend perfect! Especially the thought of Colin K lifting Linda out!! Hazel - don't foget to send me the photo! I'll see you all soon - maybe in Saltburn and definitely at Fylde. I'm featuring Scolds Bridle on Oldham Community Radio next Monday, and Hissyfit sometime in September, so tune in if you can! Then Linda, Hazel and Sue are coming back here, so please get over! Love, Ali x |

Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: nutty Date: 23 Jul 07 - 10:01 AM Just arrived home to find some of my pots and baskets wilting for lack of water - ironic in't it. What a weekend................ Didn't think Saddleworth could get any better but the 10th certainly stood out as the best yet for me. The Saturday concert in the Museum was superb except that the midges certainly had a good supper - many thanks to whomever invented anti-histamines. bUT BACK TO THE HIGHLIGHTS Hissyfit continue to delight with both material and harmonies (I'm so jealous girls) Scold Bridle, Stanley Accrington, Muldoons Picnic, Jez Lowe, Bryony , Bill and Dave .... in fact everybody - I was not disappointed by one single performer I even heard good reports of the ones that I missed. Thanks to all who came to the Internet Workshops - now they know more about Mudcat they may even log on and read this. Thanks also to all the lovely people I meet at these weekend for providing such pleasure. I'm feeling tired flat and emotional but would like to share this little rhyme with you When my life is done and my spirit's at rest And there's nothing on earth that can save me Don't weep and don't mourn Send me off with a song And reflect on the pleasure that knowing you gave me. |

Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: r.padgett Date: 23 Jul 07 - 09:48 AM Met Mr Happy at last! I am home safely and dry ~ kipped in the Van Rather foggy over Saddleworth Moor O Lancashire were awarded the War of The Roses, shield donated by Sid Calderbank I think, first time 2007 Some excellent singing from Scolds Bridle, Stan Accrington (a genius), that nice Dave Molloy and the incomprehensible Scowie and Sid who went on for ever!! Hissyfit get better and better and need bookings, so too Bruce Michael Baillie. Bruce is a talented singer and a funny man, little known outside of Cleckie (how many comedians do we have at the moment ~ not too many new ones) Thanks to Arthur and Copper Kettle too Here's to next year's War! Ray Thanks also to Geoff Miller, Geoff Turner, Mary and Roy Clinging and the Lincolnshire Chappy who judged (name?)~ no hate mail will be sent!! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Mr Happy Date: 23 Jul 07 - 09:35 AM Just got home! Ali, Ditto all thanks & praise for your dedication on our behalves for making it all such a fab experience. Had inadvertant midnight roll in the en suite mudbath on Fri night, still digging congealed soil from me glasses frames - lucky 'twas dark or would've made a spectacle of meself! Could'nt find me tent in the dark & only lights to be seen was the loo block - so ended up spending the night on the floor of mens chaning room - hard - but nice & wqarm & DRY! LUXURY!! Rest've weakend sessions in the pubs great - met lots 'catters- talented lot aren't we! Ray Padgett, Muppet & many others had us all in stitches with their most entertaining renditions, & very memorably Sooz's contributions in Con Club last night. Good place that - big enough for both the massed folkers [did I spell that right?] & also the small but intimate sinaround in the little members bar [no I'd not been peeking!] Even heard the most fascinating version of 'Danny Boy' from one've the locals with the words & tune of 'Old King Cole' [naughty Boys Brigade version]!! Can't weight for next time!! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: 8_Pints Date: 23 Jul 07 - 08:24 AM Congratulations Ali - I'm sure you will be a hard act to follow next year! I can't imagine half of the effort and work you must have undertaken to make the event such a success - Many thanks indeed. I agree the move to the Greenfield Conservative Club provided much more room to squeeze all those singers into. This was my personal highlight of the festival. Love Bob & Sue vG |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Lenny's mum (inactive) Date: 23 Jul 07 - 08:08 AM We had a great time, even the caravan had it's own lake out of the window. I was so pleased the sun shone on Sunday. The survivors sings in Greenfield Con Club worked well too. A lot better than the old pub where it was a struggle to get in, yet alone sit down. |

Hope the ducklings continue to enjoy ocarina at breakfast for a good few weeks to come - there is a second book Jayne, and a six holed ocarina + plenty of online music so there is a lot more scope for them to drive you mad over the summer! |
