Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 22 Jul 07 - 07:43 AM Wow! Thanks, Jim for finding that resource and eliminating duplicates! That list and other songs & rhymes on this thread which that list maker somehow omitted, prove at least one thing- people who say "Ain't ain't a word" don't know what they're talking about. :o) |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Jim Dixon Date: 21 Jul 07 - 08:25 AM These songs are listed in The Online 78 rpm Discographical Project, which is also indexed at Honking Duck. Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 05 Jul 07 - 08:51 AM Thanks, Mo! Btw, I just posted another "song" that I remembered to that "Aint Gonna Grieve No More thread" whose link you provided. |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Mo the caller Date: 04 Jul 07 - 12:07 PM Well I thought we must have discussed it before this thread Our version always started Oh a (that word we didn't think was all that bad then, OK lets say Deacon instead) went down echo In a cellar to pray echo And the lights went out echo |And he stayed all day Repeated faster without the echo Ain't gonna grieve My lord no more. Chorus Then the improvised verses You'll never get to Heaven In ---'s old car 'cos ---'s old car wont go that far etc.etc We sang the chorus in 2 parts, half singing Ain't gonna grie-e-e-e-ve My Lord no mo-o-o-o-ore Ain't goona grieve My Lord no more repeat while the others sang Ain't gonna grieve my lord, Aint goona grieve my lord Aint gonna grieve my lord no more repeat. It was sung (even by church groups) completely without any religious intention, even though the words would seem to be religious |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 04 Jul 07 - 12:05 PM Hi Mo! Were the verses to "Aint gonna grieve" song that you remember like the one I posted? Would you post an example from your memory. Thanks! And I suppose a coach trip song is like the USA term "bus trip" song {ie. a song sung by kids while they are riding a bus on a school trip or some other group trip}. Is that right? Here's a link to a Mudcat thread on bus trip songs: thread.cfm?threadid=36629 "Back of Bus Songs" |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Mo the caller Date: 04 Jul 07 - 11:50 AM 'Aint gonna grieve' is used as a coach trip song in the UK The religious chorus stays there, but people make up verses, all starting will the line You'll never get to heaven. |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 04 Jul 07 - 11:26 AM Sorry, Fred Maslan! I see that you posted some lines to "Aint gonna grieve my lord no more on 01 Jul 07 - 03:06 PM. ** Hey, Bert! I've been meaning to say I like your "Road To Nowhere" song, though I don't read music so I don't know how it sounds. But I particularly like the words: I lost my best gal down in Dallas where she went to I can't tell and I guess this road is headed nowhere except maybe it's bound for hell -snip- I hope you record it soon! |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 04 Jul 07 - 11:17 AM Also, is the song "Sail Away, Ladies" listed on this thread yet? "Ain't no use to sit and cry Sail away, ladies, sail away. You'll be an angel by an' by, Sail away, ladies, sail away," -snip- I seem to recall writing about this song on some recent Mudcat thread, but can't remember which one. Oh, yeah, now I remember. It was thread.cfm?threadid=102897 :o) |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 04 Jul 07 - 11:09 AM is the song "Aint Gonna Grieve No More" listed on this thread already? That religious song interests me partly because of its use as a non-religious song. As a kid, I remember singing that line as "Ain't Gonna Meet My Lord No More" as "Aint gonna meet my lord no more". I'd sing it along with a rhyming insult [diss; put-down] verse like this: Oh you'll never get to heaven with Debbie's face cause Debbie's face is ah disgrace. Oh you'll never get to heaven with Debbie's face cause Debbie's face is ah disgrace. Aint gonna meet my lord no more. -snip- That's the only verse that I can remember. I don't know if we {my sisters, friends and I} sung any other verses to that song. But I do know that we had NO idea that this song was based on a spiritual or gospel or whatever genre of African American religious song that "Aint Gonna Grieve My Lord No More" is. By the way, as I wrote in that thread whose link I provided, I think that title is supposed to read," Ain't gonna grieve, my Lord, no more" with "my lord" being an interjection. I believe that this sentence meant that the person wasn't going to grieve anymore {for whatever reason he or she was grieving} and not that the person was going to grieve the Lord {God or Jesus} anymore. Of course, there are some who may still disagree with this interpretation of that line. :o} |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Charley Noble Date: 04 Jul 07 - 09:53 AM Sure, Joe. That ain't too hard but I probably harvested the song from Mudcat. I sing it to the tune of "The Old Gray Goose Is Dead": THEY AIN'T NO FLIES ON AUNTIE (As recorded by the Akins Birmingham Boys, 1929) You think you're gonna hear a song about the deep blue sea, But if that's running through your mind, mistaken you will be; Now sailor songs are very nice, I'm sure you will agree, But this is no sailor song, and you will surely see: They ain't no flies on Auntie, on Auntie, on Auntie; They ain't no flies on Auntie, and I'll tell you the reason why: She don't drink, nor she don't smoke, But she likes to hear a naughty joke; They ain't no flies on Auntie, and that's the reason why. They ain't no flies on Auntie, on Auntie, on Auntie; They ain't no flies on Auntie, and I'll tell you the reason why: She don't condemn the girls who pet; She says no one died from it yet. They ain't no flies on Auntie, and that's the reason why. They ain't no flies on Auntie, on Auntie, on Auntie; They ain't no flies on Auntie, and I'll tell you the reason why: She drinks her liquor by the quart, Liquor that she never bought, They ain't no flies on Auntie, and that's the reason why. They ain't no flies on Auntie, on Auntie, on Auntie; They ain't no flies on Auntie, and I'll tell you the reason why: She rolls her stockings to her knees, When she sets down, oh, you can see; They ain't no flies on Auntie, and that's the reason why. (Repeat last verse.) Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 03 Jul 07 - 10:47 PM Google found this other "aint gonna tarry" song for this thread: Artist/Band: Patty Loveless Lyrics for Song: Big Chance Lyrics for Album: Dreaming My Dreams Well, there's a boy down Shelby Gap And I like sittin' on his lap I'm his gal and he's my man We been makin' weddin' plans Brought him home to meet my ma She raised Cain and dropped her jaw "Girl, you're crazy as a bat, you ain't gonna marry that" Looka here mama, looka here daddy This is my true love, we're gonna get married Ain't a gonna hem-haw, ain't a gonna tarry This is my big chance, we're gonna get married Oh, mama, daddy, can't you see Holler's closin' in on me Cousins pourin' down like rain They're runnin' out of given names It's so crowded I can't breathe You need one less mouth to feed Forty dozen here at home You won't miss me when I'm gone Looka here mama, looka here daddy This is my true love, we're gonna get married Ain't a gonna hem-haw, ain't a gonna tarry This is my big chance, we're gonna get married Oh, he's the prettiest in these hills I don't hitch him, some gal will You just messed up my big chance For married bliss and true romance Two things y'all don't realize Shelby boys is mighty shy And courtin' life is extra hard If I can't keep 'em in the yard Oh, another one gone [Thanks to HuntingtonM15@comcast.net for lyrics] http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/patty-loveless/big-chance-16221.html |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 03 Jul 07 - 10:43 PM Well, it ain't over till it's over. [not to mention the fact that, to my knowledge, no woman of large size has sung] ** I admit that I cheated and used my friend Google to find this spiritual. However, imo, there are at least two typos in this example. AIN'T GOING TO TARRY HERE Sweep it clean Ain't going to tarry here I sweep my house with the gospel room Ain't going to tarry here Sweep it clean Ain't going to tarry here Gong to open my mouth to the Lord Ain't going to tarry here O-o-o Lordy, Ain't going to tarry here 'Cause he's digging down in the grave Ain't going to tarry here The big bell's tolling in Galilee Ain't going to tarry here O-o-o Lordy Ain't going to tarry here http://www.negrospirituals.com/news-song/ain_t_going_to_tarry_here.htm -snip- I've never heard [or heard of] this spiritual. But it seems to me that "I sweep my house with the gospel room" is a misprint. "I sweep my house with the gospel broom" makes much more sense to me. Also, speaking of typos, "gong" in the line "gong to open my mouth to the Lord" is obviously "going". But as to that phrase "open my mouth to the Lord"...well I've never heard that expression before. Does anybody know this song, and if so is "broom" the correct word in that line? And is "opening my mouth to the Lord" the right phrase [instead of something like "opening my mind" or "opening my heart" or "opening my eyes"? |

Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Midchuck Date: 02 Jul 07 - 11:46 AM I arbitrarily date the acquisition of legitimacy by "ain't" as of PP&M's recording of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right." They were so clean cut, no word they used could possibly be improper. I think that was about the middle of the '60s. Peter. |

Thanks also for information about that word. ** Severn, with regard to this example: "Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None Of Mt Jelly Roll" I'm assuming that you meant to type the word "my" instead of "Mt". Is that right? ** There's a Mudcat thread called Roaches and Bedbugs? that includes a number of versions of that song {which sometimes known as It Aint Gonna Rain No More}. Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 01 Jul 07 - 11:10 AM Off topic, but in response to eric the red's post. I never said that I was retiring from Mudcat. I told someone privately that I was not going to post on Mudcat for a while for personal reasons. And though that person meant well, he started a thread without my prior knowledge. Here's a link to my post on that thread: thread.cfm?threadid=102110#2066265 "Azizi" And here's an excerpt from that post: "To badly paraphrase Mark Twain, the reports of my break taking from Mudcat are true. Q pmed me and asked why I wasn't posting on Mudcat, and I succiently replied that I was taking a break from posting here. I neither knew nor did I expect him to start this thread based on that information. I think that Q started this thread because he correctly surmised that I was at low energy, and he wanted to give my spirit a much needed boost. Although I feel somewhat embarrassed by this thread, I thank you, Q, for your consideration. And with all my heart and soul, I thank all of you for this unexpected present... I have met so many wonderful, interesting, knowledgeable, creative, and caring people through posting on Mudcat. When my hibernation period is over, God willing and the creek don't rise, I'll be back exchanging comments with you all." -snip- When I go into hibernation mode for whatever reason or reasons, it could be for one week, one month, two months or longer. As it turns out, I didn't post on Mudcat for a little less than three weeks. Again, I didn't ask nor did expect that anyone would start a thread about my absence from posting. But again, I thank Q for his good intentions. I also thank all those who wrote supportive comments and indicated that they missed me and hoped that I would return to posting on Mudcat. When I started posting again on Mudcat, I included this "thank you" post at the end of my first post on that thread that I started: "Thank you Mudcat members & guests. I very much appreciated and still appreciate your support and kind words. While I didn't ask for words of encouragement, they really meant and still mean a lot to me. But now that I'm back, you can stop being so nice. Just kidding :0}} " thread.cfm?threadid=102593#2079998 "Bazooka Zooka Bubble Gum" -snip- eric the red, since you asked me this question on this public thread rather than private messaging me, I felt the need to respond to you on this public thread. But having done so, I no longer feel the need to address this on any other thread. Best wishes, Azizi |

Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Jun 07 - 09:43 PM Well, this one is more "cain't" than "ain't," but I like it - and it starts with "ain't." -Joe- I Can't Say No (from Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma!) It ain't so much a question of not knowing what to do. I knowed whut's right and wrong since I been ten. I heared a lot of stories and I reckon they are true About how girls're put upon by men. I know I mustn't fall into the pit, But when I'm with a feller, I fergit! I'm jist a girl who cain't say no, I'm in a turrible fix I always say "come on, le's go" Jist when I orta say nix! When a person tries to kiss a girl, I know she orta give his face a smack. But as soon as someone kisses me, I somehow, sorta, wanta kiss him back! I'm jist a fool when lights are low I cain't be prissy and quaint I ain't the type that can faint How c'n I be whut I ain't? I cain't say no! Whut you goin' to do when a feller gits flirty, and starts to talk purty? Whut you goin' to do? S'posin' 'at he says 'at yer lips're like cherries, er roses, er berries? Whut you goin' to do? S'posin' 'at he says 'at you're sweeter 'n cream, And he's gotta have cream er die? Whut you goin' to do when he talks that way, Spit in his eye? I'm jist a girl who cain't say no, Cain't seem to say it at all I hate to disserpoint a beau When he is payin' a call! Fer a while I ack refined and cool, A settin on the velveteen setee Nen I think of thet ol' golden rule, And do fer him what he would do fer me! I cain't resist a Romeo In a sombrero and chaps Soon as I sit on their laps Somethin' inside of me snaps I cain't say no! |

Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 30 Jun 07 - 08:39 PM Okay, I said I wasn't gonna add no spirituals, and I'm not-yet. But I'm gonna cheat a bit, cause this next song I'm adding to this thread is a civil rights song {otherwise known as a "Freedom Song" that is based on a spiritual: AINT GONNA LET NOBODY TURN ME ROUND Aint gonna let nobody turn me 'roun' turn me 'roun Aint gonna let nobody turn me 'round I'm gonna keep on walkin' keep on talkin walkin into freedom land Aint gonna let {name a prominent segregationist} turn me 'roun', turn me 'roun Aint gonna let {repeat name} turn me run I'm gonna keep on walkin' keep on talkin walkin into freedom land Aint gonna let no jailhouse turn me 'roun' turn me 'roun Aint gonna let no jailhouse turn me round I'm gonna keep on walkin' keep on talkin walkin into freedom land Aint gonna let no policemen turn me 'roun' turn me 'roun Aint gonna let no policemen turn me round I'm gonna keep on walkin' keep on talkin walkin' into freedom land Aint gonna let no playa haters turn me 'round turn me 'round Aint gonna let no playa haters turn me 'round I'm gonna keep on walkin keep on talkin walkin into freedom land -snip- The word "marchin" may be substituted for "walkin". The last verse was added 6/2007 to update the song a bit. Fyi, A "playa hater" {player hater} is a person who is jealous of another person's possessions, accomplishments, looks etc. A playa hater could also be antagonistic toward the person for no reason at all. |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Bert Date: 30 Jun 07 - 08:38 PM Of course it's a word. I use it all the time. |
Subject: RE: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 30 Jun 07 - 08:17 PM I'mma leave the easy ones that come from Black American spirituals for other folks to list-unless time passes and nobody else list them. So what's the first song I'm puttin on this thead gonna be? Well, there's a Bob Dylan song called: "You Aint Going Nowhere" @displaysong.cfm?SongID=8006 I mention that song because it has the same exact title as a children's foot stomping cheer a girl name Shadaya showed me in Pittsburgh, Penn back in 2002. I don't think the foot stomping cheer and the Bob Dylan song have anything to do with each other except for the fact that they have basically the same name. Here's the words to the children's foot stomping cheer: YOU AINT GOIN NO WHERE Entire Group: You ain't goin no where, no where. You ain't goin no where. You ain't goin no where, no where. You ain't goin no where. Group {minus the soloist named}: Hey, Shadeya, In-tro-duce yourself Shadeya {name or nickname of the first soloist}: Too shy Group {minus the soloist named}: Hey, Shadeya, In-tro-duce yourself Shadeya: I'll try My name's Shadeya. I cheer for Garfield. My sign is Libra. And when I'm up Group {minus soloist named}: When she's up. Shadeya: I'm hot stuff. Group {minus soloist named}: She's hot stuff. Shadeya: And when I'm down. Group: And when she's down. Shadeya: Don't mess around. Group: Don't mess around Shadeya: Don't make me scream. cause you will be _knocked _out. -Shadeya Tyler {African American girl age 10 years; Garfield area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 2002; collected by Azizi Powell, 2002 Performance instructions: {Chant while doing a synchronized foot stomping routine that includes standing basically in place while producing bass soundihg foot stomps, alternating with [individual] handclaps, and body pats [pattin juba]. {__} means to pause a beat. Repeat the entire cheer from the beginning with the next soloist who says her name or nickname, the name of the sport or community team she cheers for {presumably she's a cheerleader for} and her astrological sign. Continue this pattern until every one in the group has had one turn as the soloist.} For more information on foot stomping cheers, visit www.cocojams.com |
Subject: Ain't Songs & Rhymes From: Azizi Date: 30 Jun 07 - 07:42 PM Some people say ain't ain't a word. But we all know that ain't true. Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering what songs or children's rhymes you can think of have the word "ain't" in their title or somewhere in their words. I know a bunch of songs and children's rhymes that have the word ain't in their names. Plus there are songs & rhymes that don't have ain't in their titles but have it in their words. And just for the heck of it, I'm gonna list some of them right here on this here thread. If you aint doin nothin else and if you've got a mind to, join in this thread. And if you're busy now, then join in later if you wanna. And if you don't want to join in, well, that's okay too. |
