Subject: Leeds Folk Event From: The Doctor Date: 01 Jul 07 - 07:12 AM At the beginning of September there will be a week of folk music in Leeds, as part of Celebrate Leeds 2007, the 800th anniversary of the first market charter. As well as a week of singarounds and sessions there will be three concerts, Friday and Saturday evenings in Holy Trinity Church, tickets £5, and a free one in The Light Saturday afternoon. Artists taking part include Tom Napper and Tom Bliss, The Durbervilles, Duncan McFarlane with both acoustic and electric bands, and a variety of other local artists. Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: Les in Chorlton Date: 01 Jul 07 - 12:03 PM Will the "Folk" sessions be in a specific area of Leeds? |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: Willa Date: 01 Jul 07 - 03:15 PM Link http://www.celebrateleeds07.com/folk Events include an Irish Festival July 21st/22nd |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: The Doctor Date: 01 Jul 07 - 05:19 PM In answer to Les the sessions will be scattered across Leeds, most evenings have more than one to choose from, and the various pubs are listed on the websites. I have made use of existing sessions rather than try and set up new ones in competition. As Willa says there is also an Irish festival next month, Irish music being very strong in Leeds. My wife went looking for music in Ireland, and was told she'd do better looking in Leeds. But although I have concentrated more on English folk there are some sessions included in the list that are Irish, and whenever musicians get together to play it's not long before Irish tunes are heard anyway. The whole idea is to reflect the diversity of culture and talent in and around Leeds. |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: GUEST,Greycap Date: 01 Jul 07 - 07:37 PM Where are the Irish events in Leeds? Really looking forward to any info? |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 02 Jul 07 - 04:05 AM The Leeds gathering usually takes place in November. Organised by Des Hurley and Chris O'Malley it includes sessions, concerts, poetry and literature and films. I've was house MC in the early years, and it's grown in size and quality from strong beginnings. The Leeds Gathering There are regular and very good Irish sessions at The Chemic Tavern in Woodhouse, and The Pointer down near the old Roscoe - bothe, unfortunately, on a wednesday night (though the Pointer has moved a few times). There's no rivalry and some musicians go to both, it's a matter of pub size, really. Peter Taylor's excellent event (see link above) takes place earlier - in September, and this first year forms part of the Celebrate Leeds (String O Beads' 800th birthday). Again I'm involved, in a purely minor advisory capacity (Peter is a neighbour and an old family friend). We hope we may develop the festival in future if things go well this year. It's not specifically Irish, and will include something of everything, as it aims to celebrate some of the amazing folky talent we have in this city. Please help to spread the word and make both gigs a huge success, so both can grow. See you in the autumn! Tom |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: Folkie Fiona Date: 02 Jul 07 - 07:38 AM Sounds like a good event - a bit different for Leeds. Whereabouts are The Durbervilles playing? |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: HipflaskAndy Date: 02 Jul 07 - 07:47 AM Fiona, I'm told The Durbs are playing alongside my DMcF electric folk-rock band on the Sat aft - free to everyone! - in 'The Light' right in the City Centre. The evening concert (where we are on with Toms Napper/Bliss) will be our 'acoustic' band - just to make it clear which event features which band! The venue for that one is on the link above I believe. Cheers - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: GUEST,Wayne Date: 02 Jul 07 - 09:33 AM You can see The Durbervilles, The Duncan McFarlane Band and the Doctor himself at the Abbey Festival, Abbey Inn, Newlay, Leeds on Saturday 21st July. The fest lasts all weekend (there's a thread about it kicking around somewhere)and the pub is one of the Leeds Event's venues Diolch Wayne |

Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: The Doctor Date: 04 Jul 07 - 09:06 AM it helps to keep it going if I mention that we are being sponsored by Hobgoblin, and Russ Flemming, the manager of their Leeds shop, will be taking part in the Friday night concert. |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: The Doctor Date: 06 Jul 07 - 03:57 AM Tickets for the two Holy Trinity concerts, £5 each, are available from Gateway Yorkshire, at Leeds City Station, from Hobgoblin in Leeds and from me, see the websites mentioned before. Unless they are all sold out by then they will also be available on the door. |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: The Doctor Date: 27 Jul 07 - 06:28 AM One more month before the Leeds Folk Event, and your chance to see Tom Napper, Tom Bliss and Duncan McFarlane for only £5 on Saturday night, not to mention a raft of other local performers on the Friday night. Also the chance to see The Durbervilles and Duncan for free at The Light on Saturday afternoon. All this plus a week of singarounds and sessions, 2-8 September. |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: The Doctor Date: 25 Aug 07 - 02:02 PM Just one more week before we start. Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: HipflaskAndy Date: 04 Sep 07 - 05:32 AM refresh |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: The Doctor Date: 05 Sep 07 - 04:44 AM APOLOGIES to anyone who, like me, turned up at The Abbey on Monday evening for the advertised singaround and found the pub shut. Martin, the landlord, was most apologetic last night, but they'd lost the water, possibly something to do with the major water-main burst in Leeds. So he had no washing facilities, no toilets, not even the chance to water the beer. Tonight, however, there are sessions at The Chemic, The Grove and The Wrens. |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: HipflaskAndy Date: 05 Sep 07 - 02:02 PM Went for a recce today to the 'Light' in the city centre to see where we'll (DMcF electric band) be playing with the Durbervilles - big airy space! Starts 2.30 - ends 4.30pm - it's free! Then walked down to Trinity Church Arts Centre on Boar Lane - the venue for the evening concert with Napper/Bliss & m' acoustic Band (£5 - a bargain!) Lovely place for an acoustic concert! There's even going to be a bar! Surprised me - given the venue - but that's how they allus run it there - grand! See ya - Duncan (McFarlane) |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 05 Sep 07 - 02:20 PM I'm actually tuning up now :-) |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: The Doctor Date: 06 Sep 07 - 05:06 AM SAD NEWS OF DISASTER I returned from the recce with Duncan yesterday afternoon to find an email waiting, from the person I had engaged to organise the afore-mentioned bar, telling me that his daughter had been rushed into hospital, and consequently he and his wife could no longer do the bar. I've tried various other people, but so far with no success, so if anyone out there can help, or even has any suggestions, please get in touch. The simplest way now is through my website, peter-taylor-folksinger.co.uk. I've got a TEN, but nothing more. |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: BusyBee Paul Date: 07 Sep 07 - 03:43 AM Looking forward to tomorrows events at The Light and Holy Trinity. (Or, in other words.....REFRESH!) |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: HipflaskAndy Date: 07 Sep 07 - 02:11 PM Speaking of 'refresh'... In case the bar isn't sorted for the evening concert, anyone coming might want to put a bottle or two in their bag as a just in case! Cheers - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: BusyBee Paul Date: 08 Sep 07 - 05:56 AM Just the housework to finish, then I'm off to Leeds, with bottles! See you all in The Light and Holy Trinity tonight. |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: Zany Mouse Date: 08 Sep 07 - 06:46 AM Pity it clashes with Barnsley tonight or I might have gone. Maybe next time ... Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: BusyBee Paul Date: 09 Sep 07 - 09:49 AM Yesterday's sessions at The Light and Holy Trinity were everything they'd promised to be and more. Great time had by performers, audience and passers by. First time I've seen anyone breakdancing to the Duncan McFarlane Band - which was a far more interesting sight than the lad who decided to do a moonie while walking past!. Thanks to veryone who put so much effort into the day - Peter, Durbervilles, DMcF band (rock and acoustic) and the 2 Toms. The Holy Trinity was a grand venue and the stand-in bar people did a roaring trade. Well done Leeds. |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 09 Sep 07 - 09:57 AM It was a pleasure - and thanks to The Doctor for making it all happen T&T |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: The Doctor Date: 09 Sep 07 - 04:11 PM Thank you for all the positive comments. It was a success for everyone who was there, but a lot of people weren't, particularly at the two evening concerts. If you had thought of going but didn't perhaps you could give me a brief indication as to why, anonymously if you wish, and if you have any theories as to why people may not have wanted to turn out to a venue in the middle of Leeds on a Friday or Saturday night I would like to know. Finally a big thank you to everyone who did come, and especially all the performers. |
Subject: RE: Leeds Folk Event From: MoorleyMan Date: 09 Sep 07 - 05:46 PM Poor attendance on Friday could have been due to the Eliza Carthy gig at the City Varieties, Peter, so I wouldn't be too dismayed. My own reason for not being there on the Friday night as originally planned was that I was away in Lancashire attending a funeral and to be honest I was far too emotionally gutted to come back into Leeds when I returned home. I'm glad it went well for those involved however, and I would hope to be able to make a contribution next year. Well done Peter for all your efforts in making it happen. M |
