Subject: Herga 9 Jul 07 Sing a Happy song for Ron From: Moses Date: 04 Jul 07 - 04:42 PM This will be a special evening of happy songs sung in memory of Ron Barnett. Ron was a stalwart of the club for many years at the Royal Oak until ill health prevented his regular attendance. He had also been bagman for Herga Morris and was well known for his witty and informative club posters. Ron requested in his will, an evening of Happy songs and we will be delighted to fulfill his request and to welcome anyone who knew Ron to join us at our new(ish) venue at the Pinner Green Social club, Rickmansworth Road, Pinner, Middlesex, HA5 3TJ. Also anyone else who just wants to come along and join in will be very welcome. Starts 8pm. The only stipulation ... and for this one time only ... no doom and gloom - only happy songs allowed! We will be providing a few light refreshments so if you can let us know if you are thinking of joining us that will help us organise the catering. Christine |

Subject: RE: Herga 9 Jul 07 Sing a Happy song for Ron Barnett From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 09 Jul 07 - 07:17 AM What a great idea!. An Evening of Happy Songs! Well done Ron! for a splendid piece of will-making. I can't be there but I'll be thinking of you all raising the roof in best Herga tradition. The Herga was always one of my favourite clubs. Whenever I had Herga in my diary I would set off knowing it wasn't going to be just another gig, but a visit among welcoming friends. Long life to the Herga. I wish I was there tonight. Burl. |
Subject: RE: Herga 9 Jul 07 Sing a Happy song for Ron Barnett From: Herga Kitty Date: 09 Jul 07 - 06:23 PM Thanks to everyone who came this evening and made it a really special night - wonderful that we were treated to songs from former club members now residing in New Zealand, Cheshire, Rodesia, Wiltshire, Teignmouth.... Kitty |
Subject: RE: Herga 9 Jul 07 Sing a Happy song for Ron Barnett From: George Papavgeris Date: 09 Jul 07 - 06:38 PM A truly great evening; and all the ex-Herga-ites added some very sturdy bricks to the Wall of Sound, and stirred some memories, and gave us newbies glimpses of the club's - and Ron's - past. Mick's, Mary's, Tim E's and Tim B's renditions were my favorite, I think. I counted some 45+ people in the room, lost track of the number of singers. And great food was laid on, and best of all, Ron's collection of CDs and books was laid out for people to choose anything they wanted to take away! I grabbed 4 albums, then found Vanessa had taken another 2 plus a couple of books. Ron was well honoured, and in the process we had a really great time. |
Subject: RE: Herga 9 Jul 07 Sing a Happy song for Ron Barnett From: Herga Kitty Date: 09 Jul 07 - 06:57 PM I thought "She loved a Portuguese" collected by Mike Roberts from Geoff Lakeman (a former Herga resident) in Yorkshire was pretty good, too, as an example of Herga eclecticism.... And thanks, Burl, for the good wishes - and for some great evenings at Herga when you guested! I remember being blown away by Down the Bay to Juliana when I was still quite young (quite a long time ago). Kitty |
Subject: RE: Herga 9 Jul 07 Sing a Happy song for Ron Barnett From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 10 Jul 07 - 10:46 AM A wonderful evening - a fitting tribute to very nice man. It was great to see so many people from the old days turn up to sing in Ron's honour (some from some distance, as mentioned above), and a pleasure for me to hear some of the people I haven't heard sing for a long time. Some splendid perfomances all during the evening, including a scrurrilous tribute from Hugh Diamond incorporating references to several Robot Nimb songs. And, as George said above, Ron's CDs and books available for anyone to take away - hundreds of them. As generous after death as he was before (he often turned up with books he's come across that he thought people would like), I came away with a bagful of swag (which I promise has found a home that will love it!). He also left a sizeable sum of money to the club, to use as they see fit. A well-deserved send-off for a man who threw himself into all aspects of Herga over the last 30 or 40 years - the song, the mummers and the morris. He'd have loved the night (well, the part he didn't snooze through!). Mick |
Subject: RE: Herga 9 Jul 07 Sing a Happy song for Ron Barnett From: GUEST Date: 10 Jul 07 - 03:54 PM I tried counting performers and got up to 26 - 3 Tims (Brooks, Edwards, Frost), 2 Daves (Field, Gardiner), 2 Georges (Papavgeris, Clarke), 2 Mikes (Roberts, Sparks) and a Mick (Pearce) Helen Akitt, Mary O'Connor, Christine Connelly and Steve Last, Hugh Diamond, Huston Diamond, Amanda Diamond and Eddy Richards, Martin Curtis, Anthony Burke, Richard Mellish, Roger Rowe, Graeme Knights, Johnny Collins, Lesley Brooks and me. Apologies if I missed anyone. I also tried counting the blokes who'd danced out in burgundy corduroy breeches and tricorns with Herga Morris. I think the 3 Tims, plus Dave Field, Roger Rowe, Mike Roberts and Paul Nye, made it 7. Unfortunately not up to dancing last night.... Mummers - all the Tims, plus Mike Roberts, Mick Pearce, and George P (possibly also Roger, but I can't remember). Hopefully everyone signed the list! And we had the Middlesex toast too. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Herga 9 Jul 07 Sing a Happy song for Ron Barnett From: Herga Kitty Date: 10 Jul 07 - 05:04 PM Cookie reset, again, I hope.... Kitty |
Subject: RE: Herga 9 Jul 07 Sing a Happy song for Ron Barnett From: Herga Kitty Date: 11 Jul 07 - 02:33 AM And memory better this morning - can remember that Roger drove from Plymouth to Eastcote on Boxing Day morning to go out with the Mummers. K |
Subject: RE: Herga 9 Jul 07 Sing a Happy song for Ron Barnett From: Bill S from Adelaide Date: 15 Jul 07 - 08:02 AM Hi Kitty and everybody Sorry I couldn't be there, however, I was at the Wanneroo Folk Club and did "If it wasn't for the 'ouses in between" as my contribution at a distance. Incidentally, with one exception, all the floor singers were unaccompanied, unusual in Oz Wassail Bil (aka Squire Perth Morrismen) |
